Rafa Reported To Be In Discussions To Sign 29-Year-Old Target

We all know Newcastle will be linked with many targets this summer and only a few of the reports will turn out to be accurate.

Rafa Benitez is certain to sign on-loan goalkeeper Martin Dubravka this summer for a bargain of only €4M and Martin has made a massive difference to the side since he joined us on loan on January 31st.

He’s also a strong character and seems a smashing lad who is very keen to make the move to Newcastle a permanent one.

We have Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow as backup goalkeepers and also Freddie Woodman who is likely to go out on loan again for next season.

PSG 29-year-old keeper Alphonse Areola

So we seem to be OK for goalkeepers, but there’s a report that we are again interested in 6ft 5ins tall PSG keeper Alphonse Areola.

We have been linked with him over the last year, and the 25-year-old is not thought to be part of new manager Thomas Tuchel’s future plans.

Rafa Benitez is reported in France Football to be interested in the 29-year-old and has apparently spoken to the goalkeeper several times already about moving to St. James’ Park.

Crystal Palace and Napoli are also mentioned as being interested in the goalkeeper who has played over 70 times for PSG and for all the French Youth sides.

He has also spent loan spells at Lens, Bastia, and Villareal to get first-team experience.

His transfer fee is said to be between €13M and €17 M, but it doesn’t make sense to spend that amount of money on a goalkeeper given that Rafa will sign Dubravka.

That’s unless Darlow and/or Elliot want to leave the club this summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

A 29 year old (Dubravka) and a 25 year old (Areola) with Woodman as backup?

You can’t let sentiment get in the way of success here.

Dubruvka is good but what happens if he gets injured ? Darlow, Elliot and Selz don’t play the same way so instantly the teams style suffers especially in possession and crosses into the box!

Get 2 quality keepers in Dubruvka will be on a much higher wage here so should hopefully be willing to fight for his place?!

That money could be better used for a forward! Why spend that when Dubravka is the no1 now and Woodman will be no2 in a few years, both Darlow and/or Elliot could fill in til then. Hope its just paper talk, does not make sense.

This is bizarre and I have to agree with ArtyH above, we could use that much needed money on a forward. Dubravka is perfect for us, right now we’re well stocked in the Goalkeeper department. We should be focusing on a Striker and Number 10, and a LW.

With a goal difference of -10 keeping us in 10th place Rafa is clearly focused on great goal keepers cutting out crosses and installing confidence in the back four to provide the platform not to concede and build attacks going forward and score. I would expect the core positions in the team to be further strengthened to give the squad depth ahead of another competitive season including extra cup matches.

Rafa is a perfectionist. He’s building from the back. Its like his analogy of a train. The guy makes sure he has everything in place to be successful.
The amount if sub standard players we have he will improve on.i think we will see huge numbers out and in.
Both arsenal and Liverpool cleaned house back in the 90’s and success off the back of it. We have A good nucleus of a team to build on. I’d say we have approximayely xi in the squad that are ready including Dubravka.

If Rafa can build on that quickly I think he will. Ashley just needs to move out of his way.

From 30 Oct 16 to Dec we played 9 games
and lost them all apart from a 2 – 2 draw at West Brom
Elliot was the goalie for most of them with Darlow in for
    3 games.
a They both have fitness issues
    b Neither are top drawer

There is no point talking about Rafa doing this
and that with the club if we don’t have class in
every position and especially the spine which
    starts with the GK

    The other thing of course
    Looking on the positive side
If Rafa is looking at 2 goalies in excess
of £20M how much has been told is available ?
