Benitez Hints At Unexpected Signing For Newcastle

Rafa Benitez has been talking to Marca about the possibility of former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres joining Newcastle.

We didn’t think Rafa would want to take the 34-year-old striker, but he has hinted he would – but he doesn’t know if that would be in Fernando’s plans.

Torres has just won the Europa League with Atletico Madrid when they beat Marseille 3-0 on Wednesday night.

His contract at his hometown club runs out at the end of June, and he becomes a free agent although his wages are likely to be high.

Fernando could get some big money by playing in China or the MLS in the US.

This is what Rafa told Marco – the Madrid newspaper:

“I think it will be harder for him to come for him, not because we don’t want to. I don’t know what’s going on in his head, but maybe he is thinking about something else.”

“It would be attractive, but I don’t think it would be easy.”

“In Liverpool he was sensational. Then we went to Chelsea and, although he had a bad time when he arrived, he was essential for us in winning the Europa League,”

Torres could probably do a job for Newcastle in the next couple of years, and we need a striker who can score goals.

Rafa has the Newcastle team creating enough chances but we need a couple of top-class strikers brought in this summer, and we should win a lot more games.

It would be exciting if Newcastle can get Fernando Torres in this summer and it seems that would depend on what Torres’ plans are for the future.

What do you think?

Two year contract, first year as a regular and then see what happens. Rafa trusts him, can mold the team to play to his strengths, but then there’s the wages, not just the actual figure (plus signing on fees etc.) but what would it mean to the rest of the team, knowing he’s on at least double and more like 3 or 4 times them?

Would it disrupt them or would they rally around?

Not really what Ashley would choose to do so will be interesting to see if Rafa really does have final say.

Torres still looked pretty sharp this season when he played, be an interesting signing. Might of lost his burst of pace but the lad knows how to score goals. I’d love to see him up top for the toon with a quick player in behind. Definitely not a Mike Ashley player though but if Rafa gets his wish of full control of transfers anything’s possible
