This Newcastle Player Would Be Perfect For Liverpool

Liverpool are the latest club to become interested in signing Newcastle center-back and captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The news is in the Independent that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has the Newcastle player as one of his key transfer targets this summer.

Klopp has created an excellent side since he joined Liverpool in October 2015 but the defense is still the weak link.

Jamaal isn’t just an excellent defender but he’s got excellent leadership skills both off and on the field.

Rafa Benitez with captain Jamaal Lascelles

He could marshal the Liverpool defense and that’s something that’s necessary to take Liverpool to the next level.

Getting Southampton center-back Virgil Van Dijk in last January was an excellent move by Klopp.

The Dutchman has already strengthened the Reds defense as they play Real Madrid in the Champions League final this coming Saturday

Both Chelsea and Everton are also interested in the Newcastle captain but Rafa has already said he’s not for sale.

Jamaal is one of the most important players we have going forward, hopefully with Rafa Benitez still at the helm.

Comments welcome.

There’s several obvious contenders for POS, which I would reckon to be between Shelvey and Lascelles.

But what about our flop of the season.

Quite a few contenders there as well.

I’m going for Atsu. My criteria is expectation v achievement, we were expecting much from him but it just didn’t happen.

Joselu and others like him I didn’t really expect to blossom although he tried hard enough.

That’s my starter for 10 I’m sure that fellow bloggers can come up with other contenders and good reasons for nominating them.

I fail to get why Ed saying Jamaal Lascelles
would be a perfect fit for Liverpool is any way
anti NUFC and there’s certainly nothing bizarre
    about it.
If van Dijk was valued at £75M how much would
LPool have to stump up for our captain ?
Rafa has said he’s going nowhere that’s good
    enough for me.

EGB – yeah Atsu would have to up there I think as well. Another one who I was expecting to really push on was Isaac Hayden but he as been flat when played

for player of the season I would have to go for Diame. Everyone expected Lacelles and Shelvey to do the business but I think he has been the surprise of the show

400 million and they can have lascelles.
Why on earth would we want to advertise who would be perfect for Liverpool when we want to keep our best players.

Essex…Joselu was most definitely the biggest flop…mostly because we really needed a goalscorer and he didn’t deliver (not that anything would suggest he would)

…but as you say Atsu was a huge disappointment as well…maybe he just wanted that contract and it was back to resting on the laurel

So the question was posted yesterday i think it was, how do I feel about the “championship” wage bill. I’ve asked but still not got the desired illumination on the subject. I’ll wait a bit longer, perhaps a point will be forthcoming.

Devil’s advocate here for a minute. If we want to push on and improve the team, sooner or later we’re going to have to sell players, it’s just the way football works. Lascelles is one of our most saleable assets and Rafa is not unaware of this. If he has another Florian Lejeune lined up (rather than a Grant Hanley) and can free up some money by selling Lascelles and bringing in a cheaper but equivalent player, that could be a good thing.

I wouldn’t be happy to see him leave, he’s the heartbeat of our team, but I’d have to trust Rafa’s judgement on this.

If, on the other hand, it seemed like Lascelles was being sold from behind Rafa’s back, well that’s an entirely different box of frogs.

I’m now off to hide behind my sofa to avoid the barrage heading my way.

Agree Joselu was exactly fly what we paid for no more no less. Atsu was going to be breaking out this season and he ended up a poor second choice to a future development player pressed into premature first team service.

Trouble is Rob if you’ve concentrated this season on settling in a dependable back line the last thing you’d want to do in prep for a new season is starting over with new players. I reckon Benitez sees this back line as the foundation of next year’s team, the hunt should be on for a Diame replacement as well as the wings and two strikers.

Jazzy, accepted it a while ago mate. If we struggled through a season with Gayle and Joselu he was unlikely to get a chance. Bad move like. In fact, stupid.
Most players are still learning at his age. Definitely the most natural finisher at the club by a distance – not even close tbh – but Rafa wants instant players so there you go.
He’s not the first and I guarantee won’t be the last. Our history with youth is atrocious.
Big mistake but hey, this is Newcastle mate. Nothing should surprise any of us.
No need to wish him best of luck – although I will – he’s got a great future somewhere I guarantee that much.

It might be more than anything down to Armstrong’s style than anything else. We are still in development and maybe Rafa feels holding forwards are the way for now as he builds his team from the back. In any case I always thought a player who gets more than a couple of loan spells especially going down divisions didn’t look like staying on.

Bit of controversy but perhaps Mitrovic was the flop of the season? It’s still not clear why he couldn’t break into the first team and went out on loan. Something off about the lad there.

Can’t see Rafa selling Lascelles. The whole point of him coming here as manager was to build something, not tear it down at the first offer. Regardless of what he’s worth now, he’ll be double that by the end of next season, provided he keeps maturing as he is now. The spine imo will be

    Dubravka

    Lascelles Lejuene

    Shelvey Diame

    Big name striker.

The rest of the places to be filled by who we still have and who’s to come in. If he sold Lascelles and Shelvey he might as we’ll start again. Simply can’t see it happening.
