Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels has been on loan at Anderlecht for the season after having a miserable first year on Tyneside.
Matz wanted to get his career back on track, and it seems that he’s been able to do just that.
He has been included in the provisional Belgian squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Belgian manager Roberto Martínez has selected four goalkeepers, and that has to be reduced to three, so we hope Matz makes the cut.
And Anderlecht are very keen to sign him permanently this summer.
Matz Sels – contract agreed verbally with Anderlecht
Belgium publication Het Laatste Nieuws are reporting today that Anderlecht already have a verbal agreement in place with Sels on his wages and a five-year contract.
There was no option to buy for Anderlecht in the initial loan contract so a fee will still have to be agreed between the two clubs for the transfer to be completed.
Sels played 14 times for Newcastle and has played 37 times for Anderlecht on loan, and we paid around £6M for him from KAA Gent two years ago.
Newcastle will be hoping to get most of their money back on Sels.
What do you think?

Comment #122Nicky, if you’re basing your vote for player of the season on hairstyles, no wonder Colo won it two years running….

Comment #123Also agree on Joselu, but you simply can’t be an effective striker unless you hit the back of the old onion bag with greater regularity than both Gayle and Joselu managed last term. Either could be used as second striker cover next season though. One genuine tip top number 9, with Perez just behind, and Mitro, Gayle and Joselu tp push them wouldn’t be bad, so long as we strengthened elsewhere too. Winger, central mid primarily assuming we already have Dubravka tied up.

Comment #125I seem to remember the Liverpool fans having similar reservations about Dirk Kuyt, who did a similar job for them that Joselu does for us.

Comment #126I like Joselu Rob, apart from the lack of goals, but really he’s nowhere near the calibre of a Dirk Kuyt. Who I think was used mostly by Liverpool as we use Ritchie, certainly after his first season. Great athlete and lung power.

Comment #127Yeah, the parallel still fits – they wanted a flair player who scored tons of goals, he wasn’t that and neither is Joselu. More of a work Hoss, if you will
🙂

Comment #128With the exception that Kuyt was worth his place in the starting line up, haha, but yeah, “work hoss”, fitting and clever. Led the press well, linked play, good in the air, ran around effectively.

Comment #129Slimani, even in his brief appearances, really was obviously quite a bit better though. Proper number 9.

Comment #130It was noticeable that when Catchy looked in he wasn’t calling for ‘Rafa oot’. Rafa’ll be relieved that his sternest critic seems to have mellowed..

Comment #132It’s going to be really interesting what Rafa will about the whole forward situation this coming season…
…I just hope he has more tricks up his sleeve than Abraham!
Will Mitro leave and is Perez finally a real piece in the jigsaw! Will he admit he got it so wrong with Joselu and will Gayle be moved on to the Championship where he belong?

Comment #134He is a proper number 9. I may be still drunk, but not so drunk I can manage to disregard the achievements of an entire career.
A nip of the cooking sherry every now and again might encourage the slightly more charitable side of your own demeanor Jesper.

Is Charnley a charity or just a great guy who shared his bonus with the tea lady and Ground staff ? Or allegedly like Pardew is he be holding to Ashley ?
It has been revealed that Lee Charnley turned down his bonus in the 2016/17 promotion season.
Whether this was voluntarily, or ordered by Mike Ashley, is something we will never know.
The filing of those 2016/17 NUFC accounts at Companies House, means that we can also see that Lee Charnley’s basic pay stayed at £150,000, as it had been in 2015/16 when he was the lowest paid of any PL Chief Executive/Managing Director.
In total there was £284,000 paid to three directors in 2016/17.
Graham Carr and Bobby Moncur receiving £134,000 between them, although no doubt the vast majority of that was paid to Carr in his role as chief scout.
Carr eventually left late that financial year (20 June 2017) and the accounts appear to show he received a £250,000 pay-off

Comment #148don’t think anyone predicted lascelles to be player of the season. next year i’m going to predict we come 7th, maybe even 6th if Arsenal we get two good attacking players.
interesting that some of our worst players have the highest wages. gamez etc

Comment #149Unfortunately I think Joselu despite his work ethic is not good enough at this level. I think he’d be great at championship level but at this level he has to score more goals in his position than he does. You can’t afford passengers at this level. I like his play but without more goals he just shouldn’t be in the side sadly.
I wish him the best but we need consumptive the competition and goals scored. He is nowhere the first on the list to go however ad his value won’t see a huge return and others contribute far less.
I’m expecting to see about 17 players leave this summer. Having looked at who we have on the books. A tall order to shift that many and in some cases we may have to take a bath on some of them to get their wages off the books. However I think we have a lot of saleable assets that will command a very good price, mitro, Gayle, mbemba, colback, darlow, Clark….lots more.
