A report from Spanish outlet PericosOnline that Newcastle are interested in Espanyol defender David Lopez, who usually plays at center-back.
The 28-year-old Barcelona-born player has been at Espanyol for the last two years since joining them from Napoli.
He played at Napoli from 2014-2016 and was signed initially on a five-year contract.
Rafa Benitez was the manager of the club when Lopez was signed so he will know all about the 6ft 1ins tall player.
Lopez left Napoli one year after Rafa left the club.
Tottenham Hotspur are said to be the other Premier League club interested in signing the midfielder in addition to Valencia.
David Lopez – while at Napoli
Lopez is a right-footed player and very versatile; he can play anywhere along the back four as well as in defensive midfield so he could be a useful addition to the Newcastle squad.
But the report is that Lopez has a €40M release clause in his contract, and the Barcelona based side are unwilling to reduce that price.
Well if that’s the case, Espanyol will probably not be able to sell him this summer.
But with two Premier League clubs reported to be interested, the Spanish club are trying to maximize the transfer fee.
Last season Lopez played 43 times in all competitions for Espanyol and while at Napoli for two seasons he played 79 times with 3 goals and 3 assists.

His thesis project looks at Premier League fans’ team identification – how well they support and identify with their team.
Jack has put together a relatively short questionnaire of team identification and satisfaction with life; it should take no longer than 10 minutes.
