Benitez Linked With 28-Year-Old Former Napoli Defender

A report from Spanish outlet PericosOnline that Newcastle are interested in Espanyol defender David Lopez, who usually plays at center-back.

The 28-year-old Barcelona-born player has been at Espanyol for the last two years since joining them from Napoli.

He played at Napoli from 2014-2016 and was signed initially on a five-year contract.

Rafa Benitez was the manager of the club when Lopez was signed so he will know all about the 6ft 1ins tall player.

Lopez left Napoli one year after Rafa left the club.

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be the other Premier League club interested in signing the midfielder in addition to Valencia.

David Lopez – while at Napoli

Lopez is a right-footed player and very versatile; he can play anywhere along the back four as well as in defensive midfield so he could be a useful addition to the Newcastle squad.

But the report is that Lopez has a €40M release clause in his contract, and the Barcelona based side are unwilling to reduce that price.

Well if that’s the case, Espanyol will probably not be able to sell him this summer.

But with two Premier League clubs reported to be interested, the Spanish club are trying to maximize the transfer fee.

Last season Lopez played 43 times in all competitions for Espanyol and while at Napoli for two seasons he played 79 times with 3 goals and 3 assists.

Ed’s on the move again so here’s a summary of my posts 1 story back:

If we have to choose between a loan for Kenedy or a loan for Abraham (because I don’t see Chelski selling either except at extortion level pricing that Ashley won’t sanction) I’d take Kenedy on loan and look elsewhere for a striker because Kenedy did a job for us at LW, already knows our system and canny left wingers are in short supply whereas there are loads of potential tap in artists to target as a number 2 striker (if Tammy is our top CF target god help us) and Tammy is coming off a disappointing showing.

I’d be happy to bring in Jorgensen permanent and see if Celtic will sell Moussa Dembele (the other moussa dembele ? He seems a great prospect in the Abraham mould and scored well with a lot of assists (stats here

Could see that being a good strike force then unload the Horse to whomever will take him (if Dubai has it right and he’s on 50k a week we may have to subsidize those wages to get a taker and sell Mitrovic keeping Gayle in the mix for one last season)

So would anyone else go after Dembele (from Celtic) to challenge for CF? If so, anyone know if Celtic are willing to sell Dembele?

Other reasons he is appealing is Ashley would probably buy him (cheap and young prospect) and Rafa clearly wants a big target at CF (Jorgy and Tammy are both 1.9m, the Horse is 1.92m but Dembele’s no pygmy at 1.83m) and since he’s cheap it would let Rafa make the most of his pot of cash.
Seriously worth a look I would think.

    €40M release clause???

Defender is not our first concern (CF) so unless they cut that by three quarters or more pass.

Celtic are in a good position at the moment in that they don’t need to sell apart from crazy money which he isn’t worth !

Actually that boy Eduardo who has been on loan from PSG looks a much better player to nick off Celtic …..

Dembele was good in his first season there but this season injury and teams seem to have figured out his game have meant he isn’t hasn’t been as good!

Celtic have a few players who could probably make the step up to the EPL no bother Tierney would be great to get , Griffifths , Rogic and Armstrong are really good as well

25/30m £… Well that’s that idea out the door. Still would take Kenedy over Abraham if Chelsea won’t sell and look elsewhere for a no. 2 striker. Jorgensen is probably most realistic target for our starting striker.

That amount for Dembele would just be another example of the top 6 hoovering up the talent that they will bench or loan out. Highest I had heard was when Hoots was in dire need in Jan and apparently ready to offer 17m £ which I could see.
