Newcastle Could Be Close To Completing A Double Deal

The HLN outlet in Belgium is reporting that the permanent transfer of Matz Sels to Anderlecht is almost complete and both sides want to do the deal.

It will be interesting to see how much the Belgium club are willing to pay for the goalkeeper since Newcastle brought him in from Genk a couple of years ago for around £6M (?) – and the Magpies will want most of that money back.

Sels has just completed a very good season on loan at Anderlecht and now has a chance to resurrect his career back in his home country.

The HLN report is that Newcastle brought up the possibility that center-back Chancel Mbemba is also available, and whether Anderlecht would like to take their former player back.

Chancel Mbemba – to move back to Anderlecht?

We paid around £8M for Mbemba almost three years ago but he’s a good player (on a five-year contract) and could easily hold his own at a decent Premier League club.

Since Rafa came in two years ago Chancel has not been given too many chances and we still like the player a lot.

The report is that Newcastle would want around £8M total for both players – but surely Newcastle can get more than that?

Chancel Mbemba is still only 23 and is a Premier League class player (he has made 42 PL appearances for Newcastle) and worth £8M on his own.

We shouldn’t be selling players for negligible fees this summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Its getting very boring every day some so called reporter stating we are on the verge of signing some player or other from god knows where. If they sign 10% of players mentioned they will have a bigger squad than Chelsea & City put together. Wish reporters would report fact not fiction

    From previous

    Hibbit –

Celtic want 25/30m £ for Dembele??? Well that’s that idea out the door. Still would take Kenedy over Abraham if Chelsea won’t sell and look elsewhere for a no. 2 striker. Jorgensen is probably most realistic target for our starting striker. That amount for Dembele would just be another example of the top 6 hoovering up the talent that they will bench or loan out. Highest I had heard was when Hoots was in dire need in Jan and apparently ready to offer 17m £ which made sense given BHA given the relegation battle.

Yeah Celtic are sitting on some talent. A lot of food for thought with those 4 players you brought up… Wonder what PSG’s plans for that Edouard fellow are like you said he might be good to slot in as a no. 2 striker.

Thanks for the link, Ron. Very interesting. I have pasted some of the posts that I think stand out:

‘#NUFC used to pay all transfer fees upfront, but now owe £25m. On the other hand, they are owed a mighty £61m by other clubs, which the board is at pains to emphasise has an impact on Rafa Benitez’s transfer budget, as the cash is not immediately available.’

‘#NUFC £152m debt is about twice as much as the £77m Ashley took on in 2007 and is the highest in his reign. It’s the first time an overdraft has been required since 2013.’

‘Not only is #NUFC commercial income lower than £28m that Ashley inherited, but they have fallen way behind rivals, e.g. gap to #THFC has grown from £11m to £58m in that time. Unsurprisingly, annual report no longer says, “club continues to focus on maximising commercial revenue”.’

‘As per the Deloitte Money League #NUFC had the 14th highest revenue in the world in 2007 before Ashley’s takeover, just £19m lower than the 10th placed club. In 2017 this gap has soared to £263m. Based on 17/18 estimate, Newcastle would be in 19th position, just ahead of Napoli.’

8M for both. I thought that Cashley was a good business man ? 10M would be a more realistic price in my book

For Hail Wor Ashley; There are the 6 years of profit the club was sitting on that paid for McClaren’s spending.

you say rafa is fallible with transfers. i’d say he gets far more right than wrong and the wrong ones are usually fairly low cost and inconsequential, especially when you see he has actually made a trading profit on transfers.

    Sels and Lazaar.
Would be interesting to know if they were Rafas choice or the last to be influenced by Graeme Carr.

If we sell both Mitro and Gayle (say at the low end for a combined 20m) and add 8-10m if this double deal were to happen then surely that woukd provide a cushion (even if paid in installments) for Rafa to spend 30m on a competitive striker. In that case, couldn’t we do better than Jorgensen or Dost (linked with both of them again)?

Could we do much better? If Rafa stays on surely that (and near certainty of regular EPL gametime) will be a draw for names that might otherwise give us a pass. Problem is while I can find loads of secondary CF targets the obvious first choices we’re linked with are hardly the stuff of great excitement (jump from Dutch and Portuguese leagues???)

Still I don’t see who we could bring in any better unless I’m overlooking some talent that isn’t over 30 yrs old.

Why would we want to sell MBemba?

He’s young and versatile (can play all four spots along the back line), and a perfect fill-in for the times that Lascalles, Lejeune, Dummett, or Yedlin get injured or suspended.

If I was going for a striker(s), I would go for (in order of preference):

    William Jose
    Maxi Gomez
    Kalrl Toko Ekambi
    Vincent Aboubakar
    NIcolai Jorgensen

You’re not in the running for poster of the year so why not stop posting tripe and you might be in the running in next season’s poll. In fact you could be in for a special award – for what though is yet to be decided.

Has there not been a suggestion that Chancel may have an attitude problem, an attitude that Rafa doesn’t like?

It seems odd that the clubs reportedly willing to let him, a DRC international, go for a fee that’s less than we paid. Wasn’t Mbema was one of Carr’s signings who’ll be on relatively high wages and if Rafa doesn’t see value for money…….

Charlie in the Gallowgate seems to be one of our more rational posters yet he still exclaims when talk of another striker is mentioned, ”is he better than Mitro”? It’s obviously not about ability, how on earth could anyone, let alone a UEFA elite manager think that Joselu is better than Mitro, there is something in him that Rafa just doesn’t fancy, hopefully we will see him sold or tow/toe the line to Rafa’s instruction.

Swiss Ramble also flagged up a huge ‘mismanagement’ cost over a few years – does Ashley know he’s been responsible for mismanaging the club?

Aaand, you’ll have noticed a fee in the 2007 or thereabouts for the failed/ aborted refinancing or take over – should we be prepared to see the club carrying the cost of this years failed sale? Ashley’s got a nerve – he decides to sell then decides he doesn’t want to sell and the club bears the costs? Sorry, it ought to be Mash Holdings at the very least who picks up the fees.

When you are hobbled by budget constraints and Charnley’s vetoes Joselu deals will happen. I’d only really judge Rafa on transfers if he were given a decent pot (in this mkt say 75m plus any cash from sales) that didn’t have to be used for cash up front deals only and final authority (i.e., he could ink deals over 15m without Charnley having a veto).

Shire – Lautaro Martinez is not what Rafa has in mind anyway… Look at any link and unless they are all BS every single one is for a target man 1.8 closer to 1.9m tall each (just like Joselu).

Re Mitrovic – He’ll be sold. It’s clear to everyone he and Rafa can’t work together so he’s out. How much we can get for him is what matters now so hopefully Fulham wins promotion as they are rumoured at 15m and that could set a base price.

Re financials – I pay no mind to the books. They are cooked for tax purposes so they don’t really tell you anything. Need a forensic accountant to do that and there have been interesting links that suggest the situation is not near so bad in respect of cash flow which is what matters for transfers. It’s all posturing by Ashley and any buyer will not offer more than they the clubs real value so Ashley is either not serious about selling the club, deluded or (my bet) hoping there’s a chinese / russian / me multi-billionaire who just wants a shiny new toy at any price. Sigh… looks like we are stuck with him.

Jib, if Lascelles is worthy of a 40m bid now, then in two years time how much is he worth? Personally I’d keep him regardless as his value is only going to increase, avoiding a major injury.
But that’s me and I have no say in the matter. I don’t think Rafa will sell but he will be sorely tested I reckon.

Bobby – If the money’s big enough Ashley will take it for Captain Fantastic like he did for Big Andy. Big shoes to fill at CB and still need at least one proven CF if that happens, two pricey positions… Hope Rafa’s got sights on a suitable replacement!
