Lee Charnley has given an interview in the Mail, and he reveals some of the things that went on when we were down below and losing money quickly.
But that was the goal – even though we lost 45M after tax in the last financial year – the goal was always to get back to the Premier League at the very first attempt.
If we hadn’t done that we knew some of our Premier League class players would have wanted to leave.
Rafa Benitez agrees to stay with Newcastle in the Championship – May 2016
During his interview Lee Charley talked about Rafa Benitez:
“He, and the talented staff around him, are incredibly professional, meticulous and focused.”
“We have seen the benefit of that.”
“What Rafa has certainly done is improve the group of players on a whole. I look at Jamaal Lascelles from when he came in and he’s made huge strides.”
“We have got a group now who have an incredible spirit, work ethic and a real togetherness.”
‘If you look to improve going forward, it’s a real fight to get the balance between improving the quality of the individuals and also retaining that team ethic.”
“To find the two is not always easy – and potentially very expensive.”
The prize money for winning the Championship was only w£50,000, but the promotion bonuses of £10M promised at the start of the Championship campaign were paid.
And our first season back in the PL turned out to be very successful, and we finished in 10th place and received £123M from the Premier League.
We are back with the big boys now, and the next step in the continuing Rafalution is to sign Rafa to a long-term deal.
And we think that’s going to happen even with Mike Ashley staying on as the owner.
Jack Farish is currently studying for a Master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology at Northumbria University.
His thesis project looks at Premier League fans’ team identification – how well they support and identify with their team.
Jack has put together a relatively short questionnaire of team identification and satisfaction with life; it should take no longer than 10 minutes.
