Exclusive – Rafa Wants 29-Year-Old Italian International Defender At Newcastle

TUTTOMercatoWEB are reporting in an exclusive that Rafa Benitez is keen on signing Italian International right back Lorenzo Di Silvestri, who currently plays for Torino.

The 29-year-old has been at Torino for two seasons after signing on from Sampdoria, and he was previously at Fiorentina.

Leicester City are also reported to be interested in signing the player.

Rafa will be trying to increase the competition at Newcastle as much as he can this summer by bringing in players in various positions in the team.

Currently, the first team right-back is American DeAndre Yedlin, and he improved a lot under Rafa’s guidance last season.

29-year-old Lorenzo Di Silvestri who plays for Torino.

But we are short of full-backs now that Jesus Gamez and Massadio Haidara will be leaving the club when their contracts run out at the end of next month.

Lorenzo Di Silvestri has been a regular playing in Serie A since way back in 2007 when he played for Lazio before moving to Fiorentina two years later.

He has played 326 games in Italy over 11 years with 21 goals and 25 assists – Rafa knows all about him from his time at Napoli.

He stands 6ft 1ins tall and has an imposing physique and is an attacking fullback who can also play on the wing or as a wing-back.

Last season he played a total of 39 games for Torino with 7 goals and 4 assists.

What do you think?

    Thoughts on the Charnley’s interview.

All you need to know about the Ashley regime’s “ambition” is to put this in context from Ed’s last post:

“Lee Charnley and Rafa Benitez have started to put in bids for some of our top targets this summer, and maybe they have gone back in for this midfielder/striker.” WHEN THE PLAYER in question is MRABTI.

Most interesting to me about the interview was the reaction to it on the blog… A lot of (usually) cynical posters seem almost to have fallen for it (or at least to demonstrate a generous willingness to suspend disbelief and give some benefit of the doubt). Bishop earns his keep, that’s for certain.

I’d like to think Rafa’s scouts can upgrade manquillo etc for 5-8mill but that may be wishful thinking

I think even the cynical posters are thinking it’s Early Days and, seeing as we are being linked at the rate of 10 a day, are adopting a wait and see what Rafa pulls out of that inside pocket attitude.

As a supporter for over 60 years, I maintain a high degree of cynicism but for some reason have always also maintained a high degree of optimism. Bolstered now by the positivity of having Rafa in charge.

I would really like to know how Lazaar ever appeared on the nufc radar as a potential signing.
    Then who authorised his signing.
    The decision making was appalling.

Not all signings will go well. But this is more than that. He can’t play at any serious level.
He’s on a wage that no one will match.

How does the owner feel. After the disaster that was Riviere probably not great. Is that why he does not trust footballing people.

Willow – I think youre confusion benefit of the doubt with blind capitulation. I for one reserve the right to call foul when they pull one of their usual charades.

Re Mrabti, if as Ed says, he’s one of our top targets, god help us if we have to fall back on our backups.

Obertan is being tracked by Bayern Munich, really! Have we missed something?

If Mrabati is 1/3 the cost of Joselu, is he 1/3 as good as he is?

7 Goals and 4 assists is a pretty good return from a full back, could be a decent option.

Charnley’s interview is just another stage managed PR stunt produced and directed by Keith Bishop were the questions and answers were scripted and vetted long before they were presented

Bishop’s clearly the one who’s working on Charnley’s image (eh?) and as he’s the master of communications, he’d be best getting the idea into Charnley’s skull that he and Ashley should make the effort, have the courtesy to communicate with Rafa. Rafa clearly expected Townsend through the door so why did he have to vent his frustrations publicly to be told there was suddenly no money? Or was Charnley told at the last minute too?

There’s clearly no financial planning or control in the club alongside Charnley – has Ashley got one of the SD bean-counters looking after NUFC finances when he/ she has a spare minute?

Talk about Fred Karno’s army? It beggars belief that a multi million pound business (NUFC) should be run by a bunch of unco-ordinated misfits, Rag, Tag and,Bobtails.

For those who’ve never heard of Mike Ashley’s (sorry, Fred Karno’s) Army, here’s the words to the song. You’ll get the drift.

Maybe Lazaar is a trap buy. But wasn’t he £3m? Hardly a bank buster.hes probably been getting paid more than he’s worth but I doubt it’s 70k/week.

Let’s vilify Rafa for Lazaar and Gamez then forget all about Ritchie, Gayle, Diame and Yedlin etc who were persuaded to drop down a division and get us promoted, let’s also put the boot in about Sels while we’re at it. Never mind about Dubravka, he gets pulled out of position too many times to negate Sels!!

Think the difference between Lazaar, Gamez and then Ritchie, Gayle, Diame and Yedlin is that the latter group were known quantities with a track record in the UK.

Rafa will of course sign a few duds, everyone does. Does anyone remember the classic Alex Ferguson signings Dong Fangzhou, Bebe & Eric Djemba Djemba? Even the best get it wrong.

Rafa bought duds at Liverpool but still managed to win a Champions League final. For every Perez there is an Amalfitano. if 2 in 3 play a part and work out that is good with me.

not at all he is a player like Obertan that has qualities that attracts big clubs they just need to become more complete players which can be a mental thing that they need to change like more awareness or making more time on the ball. Rafa will have identified his potential.

Honestly though everytime lazaar and even gamez played they didn’t seem out of place to think lazaar played against a full strength hull prem team and was one of our bet performers ,it’s a weird one and as I have seen obertan pop back up tbh I always liked him I remember my first even home toon game (I’m from Suffolk) was the 2-2 draw with Tottenham and I thought he was outstanding marked bale out the game and gave him something to think about ,for all his stupid flicks he had great pace and was a great finisher when he had a chance

After looking at the wage structure of clubs around us in the Prem I can see us having big problems competing with the likes Everton,C pal,West Ham,Watford,Southampton,Leicester, I think agreeing personal terms could be a stumbling block unless Ashley will agree to up the Clubs wage structure. We will definitely miss out on signings if we don’t address this problem.
