TUTTOMercatoWEB are reporting in an exclusive that Rafa Benitez is keen on signing Italian International right back Lorenzo Di Silvestri, who currently plays for Torino.
The 29-year-old has been at Torino for two seasons after signing on from Sampdoria, and he was previously at Fiorentina.
Leicester City are also reported to be interested in signing the player.
Rafa will be trying to increase the competition at Newcastle as much as he can this summer by bringing in players in various positions in the team.
Currently, the first team right-back is American DeAndre Yedlin, and he improved a lot under Rafa’s guidance last season.
29-year-old Lorenzo Di Silvestri who plays for Torino.
But we are short of full-backs now that Jesus Gamez and Massadio Haidara will be leaving the club when their contracts run out at the end of next month.
Lorenzo Di Silvestri has been a regular playing in Serie A since way back in 2007 when he played for Lazio before moving to Fiorentina two years later.
He has played 326 games in Italy over 11 years with 21 goals and 25 assists – Rafa knows all about him from his time at Napoli.
He stands 6ft 1ins tall and has an imposing physique and is an attacking fullback who can also play on the wing or as a wing-back.
Last season he played a total of 39 games for Torino with 7 goals and 4 assists.
What do you think?

If SD paid what it should for its advertising over the years, the club might have enough to pay decent wages. As someone said yesterday, he’s bleeding the club dry while SD’s done very nicely thank you.

isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration?
how much does a club profit from advertising and how much would interest on a loan be?

Comment #62Ashley concocted that “didn’t see the debt” baloney to justify not charging SD for it’s advertising. It’s patent rubbish. We were an established epl side with a magnificent stadium packed to the rafters each week. We were worth exactly what he paid for us, debt included.
My beef with Ashley has been that he has never hired sufficient quality for the club to compete for silverware. Now we have Rafa, that has been sorted, good, well done, now pay a going rate for your advertising too and the fan’s will have little to complain about.
Ashley doesn’t need to give it away for free. He chooses to, and it does hurt and limit our chances on the pitch. It’s a football club he owns. He has a moral responsibility to do the best he can to compete for trophies.
He’s actually pretty close to being a good owner now, but the free advertising continues to stink up the joint. Compete, build the value of your asset, and make your money at the point of sale, if that’s what you’re about.
But you do wonder why making money out of the club such a priority anyway, when you are already worth 3 billiion pounds. Use the club to advertise your bread and butter by all means, but please have the decency to pay for it, and that’s how you can help Rafa and keep him.

Comment #63any idea how much profit other premier league clubs make from advertising?
it’s reasonable for an owner to take something out the business and they generally do for example the West Ham owners have taken millions in loan interest.
the question is how much is how much is the club missing out on because Ashley doesn’t pay for advertising.

Comment #66It’s reasonable to take “a wage” from a business you own if you need it, but guys like Gold, Sullivan and Ashley don’t need to take anything from the clubs they own. They are not cash poor individuals, they can put it all back in, build their asset and do right by the fan base and the community. It’s football. It’s fans, There is money in it, but it surely is not just about wringing the money out. Couldn’t Ashley maximise the revenue streams, compete for silverware, build the value of his asset, and sell eventually at a healthy profit. Wouldn’t that be the right way to go about it for him and us. Why must he harness the club and limit it’s growth and potential.

Comment #67this article says the major methods of sponsorship in football are usually:
naming rights
Kit sponsorship
Shirt Sponsorship
then says
“There are also many other minor sponsorship methods. For example a club may have a designated airline, designated energy partner, etc. However, the amount of revenue the club receives from these minor sponsors, is much less than the amount received from the major methods of sponsorship.”
which category does the SD advertising fit into?

Comment #69In some ways I do feel sorry for Penfold, he’s only paid £3,000 a week and yest he has to work with, and in effect boss people on £100,000 a week. Can’t be easy.
That’s not tongue in cheek btw.

Comment #71Jane, the ground is plastered with SD advertising and the games are watched by umpteen millions worldwide. That has to amount to a decent wedge the club is not benefiting from, while SD does and for free. One business suffers unfairly, the other gains unfairly. Both owned by the same guy. Not great, if you’re a Newcastle fan. Good if you’re an SD shareholder and the owner.
But I agree, it’s getting on. Things to do.

Comment #72I hate myself for saying this but….. He’s loaned us £144m, if it were a bank we’d be paying c£10m in interest plus the capital.
Is the SD advertising worth £q10m a year? Much as I despise the “Flannels” advert, it probably is.

Comment #73It doesn’t hold water though Mickey because he fully owns the stadium that the loan was for, and has done for 11 years. It is not a depreciating asset and it adds to the match day revenue. As owner he should not conduct himself as would a bank. He is effectively loaning to himself, getting free advertising, increased value in the asset, and increased match day revenue. In this regard, I’d say yeah, he’s siphoning of revenue the club could use to strengthen on the pitch.

Comment #76as for Charley, he’s probably on performance bonuses and after McClaren, Carver etc then his bonus must come in at minus 100,000 a week. he’s lucky to be getting paid at all seeing as McClaren cost Ashley millions in transfers and millions in relegation. he must have been close to the sack.

Comment #79I know it’s a pittance Micky. And it must annoy him the likes of Nile Ranger was on three times more not to mention the likes of Good, and Armstrong who was possibly getting more at 17.
I do think there will be bonus too knowing Ashley, which he wouldn’t have got the last two years at least.
