Newcastle Cannot Make Transfer Mistakes – As Benitez Attempts To Strengthen Squad

Newcastle have fullbacks Jesus Gamez and Sadio Haidara leaving the club this summer, so one position Rafa will want to strengthen this summer is fullback.

There’s a report in the Chronicle today that he wants to bring in a right back because there is not much competition for DeAndre Yedlin but that’s also true for Paul Dummett.

The only other full-back we have left is Javier Manquillo who was only mediocre when he played for us last season.

Newcastle have recently been linked with Torino right-back Lorenzo De Silvestri who turned 30 last Wednesday.

Rafa Benitez – must be allowed to strengthen squad significantly this summer

Rafa is busy working on transfers with Lee Charnley and he will not be taking a vacation as such but spend some time back at the Wirral in Cheshire with his wife (Maria de Montserrat) and their two teenage daughters.

The minimum Rafa needs this summer is at least one full-back, a winger, a central midfielder, and at least one striker but if Chancel Mbemba leaves we will need another center-back brought in.

This is what Rafa has said as reported in the Chronicle:

“It is clear what we need.”

“We have a couple of players on loan who are leaving, and a couple of players who have finished their contract too.”

“You need to sign players to be sure you have a good squad with competition.”

“You need to be sure you have competition, and enough levels within the squad to make sure you can approach any game thinking you can win.”

“It cannot be the case that if you miss one or two players, the team is not the same.”

“We need a squad that has to be capable of competing in the Premier League.”

Newcastle fans will be hoping Lee Charnley, and Rafa have a very good transfer window this summer because that will help Rafa sign a new deal.

Newcastle cannot make any mistakes this summer like the club made last year at this time.

    from previous
Fulham’s owner is a totally different kettle of
    fish to Ashley.

As well as Fulham – Shahid Khan owns
    Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.

He spends big dosh without batting an eyelid

This is a good read in The Mag and avoids the confusion of trying to interpet the Chronicles reports.

It does appear that Ashley as Head of his business empire doesn’t want nor have the time to get his hands dirty with the details of individual business transactions. He delegates as is the norm in business although the success of those transactions is very dependent on who you delegate to and how you communicate your objectives to them. How Charnley on £150,000 pa can carry weight in negotiations with multi millionaire players, billionaire owner and multi millionaire world class manager Rafa is a puzzle unless Charnley has the mother of all share allocations to cash in on when we win The Champions League and that’s his slice of the cake.

So Barnes and Bishop were with Ashley at this meeting but not Charnley ?

    Et tu Mikey ?

Didn’t we receive a ‘decent wedge’ when we went up as champions?

Your point about the Fulham owner’s wealth and the likelihood of a relatively big transfer spend has some merit but he will have something Ashley doesn’t and has never had for Newcastle United – ambition to win trophies and football success.

Had Ashley demonstrated an ambition for the team to succeed, to win things and made appointments that were equipped to deliver that success from the start of his reign, the club wouldn’t be pi$$ing about scratching for pennies to buy players on the cheap.

I read the Chronic’s piece as you did – that Barnes and Bishop were with Ashley at this meeting but not Charnley.

And we wonder why Rafa thinks things are happening only to find out they’re not? Ashley involves Barnes and Bishop in planning etc and Charnley’s left to get in with things in good faith as he thinks he understands them along with Rafa but when it comes to getting Ashley’s (Barnes’) sign off for spend, he’s told that things aren’t quite as he thought.

Ashley’s got Charnley in the situation where he’s expected to run the club with no support and no clear awareness of direction or strategy.

Ah, ok, I’d naively assumed there was no tick to square up from the year before, or the year before or….

It’s,like going to the bar for a drink only to be told you can’t have one until your tab’s paid. So you pay it off then get a few more drinks – on a clean slate. The way Ashley runs the club reminds me of ever decreasing circles – it’ll disappear up its own ‘arris.

If Charnley isn’t careful it’ll be the reverse of the situation at Sunderland where the ex pussycat mascot is now the new M.D. replacing the more expensive outgoing CEO.
Chanley could end up wearing a Magpie costume so at least well know where h us on match days.
Rafa will be negotiating with Barnes with Bishop taking the notes.

Or was the London meeting of Ashley, Barnes and Bishop in a curry house and did anyone else turn up ?
