Rafa Could Pass On This Experienced And Available Premier League Midfielder

Newcastle have been given the chance to sign Stoke City central midfielder Joe Allen this summer.

Stoke will be cutting back on their wage bill and offloading the high earning players at the club as they come to grips with much-reduced revenues down below in the Championship.

The 28-year-old Welsh International is almost certain to leave the Potters this summer but Rafa may not see him as a big improvement on the players he already has at the club.

It depends on who Rafa is going to try to bring to the club since he’s expected to bring in one central midfielder to increase the competition for places next season.

You would expect Rafa to bring players in who are better than what we have at the moment or younger players who can become first team regulars in the future.

Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame have formed an excellent partnership in central midfield this year and there is still a question mark over young Mikel Merino’s head – although we would be surprised if he’s not at Newcastle next season.

Isaac Hayden is another young player who has improved in central midfield since he arrived at the club two years ago from Arsenal.

We would expect any central midfielder Rafa signs this summer to be able to immediately push Shelvey and Diame for a first team starting position in August.

Both Jack Colback and Henri Saivet have no future at the club and will be for sale this summer, as Rafa transforms his Newcastle squad to be able to challenge for a top-six position next season in the Premier League.

It could be that Joe Allen at a £20M transfer fee just doesn’t fit.

In addition to Newcastle – Swansea, West Ham, Wolves, and Sevilla have all been offered Joe Allen so far this summer, but why would he ever join Swansea in the Championship?

Comments welcome.

The prospect fills me with the same anticipation as preparing to eat a kilo of cold stodgy porridge with no sweetener of any sort in it

If I was him I’d get myself off to Seville. He could get a decent haircut there I believe.

You know that summers not far away when there’s talk of Tuff and a strategically placed hanky on his bonce.
He saves a fortune in not having to go to the barbers. His misses trims his ears and good to go. Us neighbours have a larf a minute seeing him in his back garden.

Why will he be passed on? Joe Allen is a brilliant midfielder who only adds depth with quality to our squad. Will keep diame and shelvey on their toes.

Apparently we may be willing to offer a contract to Jackson Martinez. He has been out of football for almost 2 years with an injury and is 31 now but may be worth a gamble I suppose for free (apart from wages). He was signed for almost £40m in 2016 by a chinese club. He used to be a great player but not showed a lot in the last 3-4 years so I am unsure on him, 2 of them being injured though

Josh, looks like I’m stuck with my unruly mop for another day. Wednesday turns out to be half day closing and guess who missed it?
Quote of the day must therefore come from The Fast Show – bugger. 🙂

Funny one Joe Allen. Can be destructive on his day, but his day seems to be getting fewer and further apart.
That said, that may have a lot to do with the club he was at.
He’s clearly better that Hayden, but £20m better? Maybe not.
I can see why Rafa might consider him, but expect that after due consideration he’ll likely say no thanks.
