Newcastle have been given the chance to sign Stoke City central midfielder Joe Allen this summer.
Stoke will be cutting back on their wage bill and offloading the high earning players at the club as they come to grips with much-reduced revenues down below in the Championship.
The 28-year-old Welsh International is almost certain to leave the Potters this summer but Rafa may not see him as a big improvement on the players he already has at the club.
It depends on who Rafa is going to try to bring to the club since he’s expected to bring in one central midfielder to increase the competition for places next season.
You would expect Rafa to bring players in who are better than what we have at the moment or younger players who can become first team regulars in the future.

Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame have formed an excellent partnership in central midfield this year and there is still a question mark over young Mikel Merino’s head – although we would be surprised if he’s not at Newcastle next season.
Isaac Hayden is another young player who has improved in central midfield since he arrived at the club two years ago from Arsenal.
We would expect any central midfielder Rafa signs this summer to be able to immediately push Shelvey and Diame for a first team starting position in August.
Both Jack Colback and Henri Saivet have no future at the club and will be for sale this summer, as Rafa transforms his Newcastle squad to be able to challenge for a top-six position next season in the Premier League.
It could be that Joe Allen at a £20M transfer fee just doesn’t fit.
In addition to Newcastle – Swansea, West Ham, Wolves, and Sevilla have all been offered Joe Allen so far this summer, but why would he ever join Swansea in the Championship?
