Newcastle Target Pleased At Interest From Premier League

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is trying to bring in a right-back this summer to further increase the competition for places in the team.

One target we are reported to be interested in is 30-year-old Torino defender Lorenzo de Silvestri, who has 6 caps for Italy.

Newcastle scouts have watched the 6ft 1ins full-back several times this season, and Leicester City are also interested in the player.

30-year-old Torino defender Lorenzo de Silvestri

De Silvestri has been interviewed by GOAL and asked about the Premier League interest:

“I had a great season at Torino and I am glad to see that people have noticed.”

“I’m very happy at my club but it’s always a pleasure to know that there could be interest from the Premier League.”

That’s almost a standard response from de Silvestri – I am happy at my current club, but I’m flattered by the interest.

Last season he played 39 times for Torino with 7 goals and 4 assists in all competitions, and he had an excellent season.

Since he joined Torino from Sampdoria two years ago for €3.6M plus bonuses, he’s played 57 times with 8 goals and 8 assists.

Jesus Gamez and Massadio Haidara have contracts that run out at the end of this month, and they will not be retained, and that’s another reason Rafa is looking at full-backs this summer.

We wonder if Rafa’s getting pushback from owner Mike Ashley because de Silvestri has just turned 30?

Comments welcome.

    Rob
Goncalo Guedes, the Portugal international formerly of Benfica,
is thought to be valued at around €45m (£39.5m) by PSG
but the Ligue 1 champions’ Financial Fair Play concerns could force
them to lower that asking price.
PSG are likely to face FFP sanctions which will be confirmed on Friday
and newly-promoted Wolves could be in a position to take
    advantage of their situation.

Jib, like I say I’m not disputing it – it just seems to run contrary to logic. You’d think in order to justify their spend, they would require a higher income and therefore maximising the value of their player sales seems a no-brainer. I don’t get this nonsense. Hope they get hammered though for financial doping, if they’re guilty of it, it’s a blight on the game.

Do we need another right back? No.
Although it seems Rafa quite likes buying rightbacks… he’s bought 3 already since being with us. And we have 3 senior rightbacks on the books manq yed and sterry and 2 more that can play there hayden and mbemba (although the later will leave). Granted gamez has gone but still!

Ha fair point! Me included.. i’m Just concerned that we seem to be buying then stockpiling average players in the hope that one turns out a bargain… instead of buying one good one. This depleting spending power by increasing wage bills!

Would it be worth taking a punt on Shaquiri who has a 12m release clause. I think so, however his attitude is questionable so think Rafa would steer clear. But talent wise he would improve us greatly.

Re youngsters going abroad (or lack of them). Apologies if this has been mentioned already.

Jadon Sancho had a fantastic U17 World Cup last summer and was so impressive in the group stages that his club (Dortmund) recalled him and he made his first team debut for them not long after. Not bad for a 17 year old.

Lookman, the young Everton lad who signed from Charlton was about to be sent on loan to Derby by fat Sam but the lad decided he wanted to go to Leipzig in the Bundesliga. There’s also Reece Oxford (wet ham -I really rate this kid) on loan to Borussia Monstermunchingladback although I think he has an allergy to the pickled onion flavour.

That’s 3 top English youngsters preferring to take their chances abroad rather than the easy option of a lower lever league team here. Can only be good for their development really.

Re Shaquiri, while there’s even a slim chance Mitro might stay with us I can’t see us trying to get him. They’re literally be battering each other daily. Apparently Shaquiri is mates with some hardcore Bosnians (that’s where he’s from) and them & Serbs don’t get on too well…

Manager of Wolves Nuno Espírito Santo
represented Portugal at the 1996 Summer Olympics

    Goncalo Guedes, Portuguese international

There could be a remote possibility they may have conversed at some time.

Could be a good experienced player for us with a good attacking threat as well. I think we could really benefit from an attacking left back as well. I love Dummit but think there are more complete left backs out there

RobLeenio @2 – Like you I would have thought they need to maximise their income. I guess what the article is implying is that they may be forced to sell players to ‘balance the books’ and therefore have to reduce their price to guarantee a sale – I should say I’m just guessing and don’t know for sure!

That could also be observed for the Spanish market with Benitez coming from that country.
My point is Ashley won’t sanction the spend pal no matter what manager we have from what country

Ashley will sanction any transfer Rafa wants so long as the money is there to pay cash in full up front, and so long as the money will be there to cover the chaps first years wages. Isn’t that essentially where we are at?

    Famous five:

Kongolo (loan), Kenedy, Wilshere, Traore, Dembele (Celtic)

Cost a max of £75m and improve us tremendously

Not much to ask when you consider these departures will fetch £30-40m:

    Sels

    Mbemba
    Lazaar

    Colback
    Saivet
    Aarons

    Mitrovic

sorry for being a dick but the whole point
is the player will cost a lot less than £40M
I doubt the Chines owners of Wolves who
only paid £45M for the club would sanction
a spend of £40M on one player

Well he said publicly and clearly that it’s Rafa who says who comes and goes and can spend every last penny on one player or several as he sees fit, so he’d be clearly backsliding otherwise, and I’ve always been under the impression Ashley simply won’t sanction anything on the never never or dip into his own pocket. Rafa can have what’s in the bank account after all outgoings are covered, and all costs associated with a player purchase need to be covered too and no over draught.

You don’t think that’s where we are at?

None of them at the WC either so no waiting necessary.

Kenedy already familiar with us and the system, loves it here! A perfect Rafa player, talent but also he surprised me with his work ethic and strength, needed no telling when it came to defensive responsibilities.

Traore already familiar with area, shown he can improve with coaching from Pulis so what would Rafa extract. Speaks Spanish, English and French

Kongolo had an impressive 6 months at tinpot Huddersfield, duck to water in the PL, really good at LB, great athlete that can also play CB and has the stature to do so.

Wilshere – everybody knows his talent, could Rafa do for his fitness and focus what he has so many of our other players? No reason why not.

Dembele – Glasgow to Newcastle isn’t far, acclimatised to the sometimes harsh, bitter weather. His body movement, footwork and all-round game reminds me of Ba.

Imagine in all those matches when teams sat back and the onus was on us to create:

    ____________Dubravka____________
    Yedlin__Lascelles__Lejuene__Kongolo
    ________Shelvey__Diame
    Traore______Wilshere_______Kenedy
    ___________Dembele

We’d still have everybody that contributed this season aside form those that left on frees and were marginal anyway, would greatly increase competition and make the likes of Ritchie, Perez, Merino, Atsu, Dummett and Gayle push on to new levels.

There is my case your honour.

Newcastle want to sell Senegal international Henri Saivet, 27, this summer after he spent the second half of last season on loan at Sivasspor in Turkey – but most of the interest in the midfielder has been about another loan deal. (Newcastle Chronicle)

Has this been discussed already, or are we all fully aware of how the club is stuffed up with high wage players that are not good enough to hold down a starting position.

Having said that, it is not that long ago that Diame would have been considered an expensive waste of a place. Whilst he has improved considerably i would expect a younger Holding Midfielder to be brought in within the next season.

It would not hurt him to say what his plans are regarding staying – even if only one year.
This would stop all the speculation for now at least.
Seems to me a simple thing to do – would not stop talks going on in background. Also save Lee know nowt Ryder dishing out his daily rubbish.

Interesting update from the Besiktas President re Oguzhan Ozyakup

    Besiktas President Fikret Orman:
“Oguzhan Ozyakup is our player, we will officially confirm this (with a new contract).
“The problem is our agreement with Arsenal, 30% of any future transfer will go to Arsenal.
“If his contract runs out and then we sign a new deal that will no longer apply.
“We have requested that Arsenal reduce their future sale percentage but they are not interested.”

So, we (or anyone else) may well have agreed a fee with Besiktas, but they are trying to avoid a 30% sell-on fee due to Arsenal. They want to pay less, essentially. If they allow the contract to run down, re-sign Ozakup and then sell him to us (or anyone else) Arsenal get nothing. Of course, the player could refuse to sign the new deal (unlikely or he would have signed a pre-contract agreement) or the club could turn round and refuse to sell him (unlikely as they would have a very upset player on their hands) but I’ve never heard of such a strange situation before.

I have to say, if this is true then Ozyakup’s loyalty to Besiktas, ensuring they get a decent fee when he leaves, is admirable. Especially when you consider if he signed elsewhere on a free he could get a hefty signing-on fee and improved wages.
