The Mirror are reporting today that Stoke City’s new manager Gary Rowett is keen to take Dwight Gayle off Newcastle’s hands this summer.
Gayle has shown that he can score plenty of goals in the Championship and in our promotion season he was terrific with 23 league goals in just 32 appearances in the Championship.
That could have been a lot more too if he hadn’t suffered from hamstring problems in the second half of that season.
Stoke are also near to completing a deal for striker Benik Afobe from Wolves, with the fee said to be £12M.
Dwight Gayle – will Rafa sell?
Newcastle paid £10M for Dwight when we signed him from Crystal Palace two years ago, but last season he scored only 6 Premier League goals (plus 4 assists) in 37 total appearances.
Yet this year he played regularly for the side and looked an improved all-around player under manager Rafa Benitez; Dwight’s work rate was also superb and he worked his socks off for the side.
It’s a difficult one as to whether Newcastle should sell him – because he remains a decent enough player to be part of the first team squad, even though he may not be a starter.
But if a decent bid came in for him and more than the £10M we paid Palace for him, then Rafa could do a deal.
But he would make sure we had another striker lined up to come in if Gayle does leave.
Dwight has scored 29 goals and has 8 assists in 71 total games for Newcastle and he is very happy on Tyneside with his family.
23-year-old Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic seems certain to leave the club this summer, hopefully for a hefty transfer fee, but he will not be sold until after the World Cup finishes.
The competition starts in Russia on Thursday.

Comment #1Skyrtil I reckon will be a poor signing, always looks to me to be on the edge of a red card in games which will not improve with age.
Don’t see him as an improvement on Colback THB

Comment #2Dwight did look a bit sharper towards the season end so another half season at least might be a good thing?

Comment #3Can only think about selling if we have incoming strikers. Can’t have £15-20m playing upfront to score the goals!
