Top Youngster Close To Leaving Newcastle – But New Complication Arises

Real Sociedad are keen on taking Newcastle’s 21-year-old Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino back to Spain.

And the news today is that Newcastle have expressed an interest in Sociedad’s 26-year-old goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli who was on loan at Real Sociedad before being signed by Manchester City in 2016.

After signing for City the Argentine was then sent back to Real Sociedad for another loan deal before signing permanently for the Spanish side last summer.

There’s a report in Mundo Deportivo today that Real want to complete the deal for Mikel Merino as soon as possible.

With Rulli currently with the Argentine side in Russia, he would certainly slow things down if Newcastle want to do a player exchange.

Real Sociedad’s 26-year-old Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli

Rulli’s Sociedad contract has another four years to run, but Manchester City have a buy-back option for £12M that they must execute before the end of this month – if they want the goalkeeper back at City.

Liverpool are also interested in signing Rulli this summer as their new number one goalkeeper.

The report is that Real Sociedad would need to pay around €12M (£10.5M) for Merino, but it’s going to take a lot more than that for Rafa to let one of his top young players leave the club.

It seems that Merino doesn’t want to sit on the bench at Newcastle, but if that’s the case, then Rafa could always sanction a loan deal for the 21-year-old who is in New York on vacation right now with his family.

Newcastle signing Rulli and Merino (possibly) moving to Real Sociedad will need to be two separate transactions.

Rafa does seem to be after another goalkeeper this summer even though we have just signed 29-year-old Martin Dubravka from Sparta Prague.

So maybe Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot will leave the club this summer if the manager does bring in another goalkeeper to back up the Slovakian International.

Comments welcome.

If Rulli is on the radar which seems unlikely and more a defence against Sociedad’s pursuit of Merino then that’s both Darlow and Elliot out the door. Two top keepers plus Woodman staying in house should cover it.

Guardian: Newcastle are keen to complete a deal for Andros Townsend and have have indicated a willingness to pay around £20m for the winger.
looked a cracking player in the short time he was with us, And to be fair in our 1-0 win at home last season looked one of the most dangerous players on the park

But would he be welcomed back

veltman, I’ve read your comment on the previous post several times. Are you really advocating that older and infirm people do not post on here in case it makes you upset? Apologies if I’ve mistaken you, but if that’s what you’re saying then you’re out of order

jazzy, if we can’t get Kenedy, I’d have him back in a heartbeat. He should never have gone, Rafa made him shine like he’s never shone before or since.

It looks like a straight choice between
Kenedy and Townsend as both are
    priced at £20M.
    According to some papers
Rafa has already tabled a bid for AT of £20M

I agree that Rafa got the best out of Townsend and was our best player by far, But he got a right hammering at the home game against Palace last season..As did Cabaye. If we are prepared to spend 20 million on Andros townsend then I can only think we are going to spend big this summer mate

Sadly I don’t see this happening

My first choice would be Kenedy but if that wasn’t on the cards I’d deffo take Townsend – Re keepers I don’t see that as a high priority at the moment – yes I know injuries happen but I feel we have one No I and two fairly decent back ups. There’s no doubt a Centre Forward / striker is the very top of my list on incomings and I feel sure that must be top of Rafa’s also.

Our defence was fairly solid last season & I’m convinced had Mr Ashley sanctioned the signing of a good quality striker we would have been very close to the top six!

Surely 20M for kenedy or AT is no brainer. Kenedy is only 22 and could give us years of loyalty, while at 28 AT already thought the grass was greener once, whereas Kendy seems to genuinely want to be here. Far more to come from Kenedy long term I would have thought.

With Mahrez leaving Leicester IMO the press link with Townsend is only an attempt to establish a possible price if they start looking for a replacement.

I agree with Rotonda: would rather have Kenedy than Townsend.

It would be a bit disappointing to finally break the transfer fee record at NUFC for a player we already bought once, who chose to leave us in summer of 2016 and that Rafa could have reaquired for 15M £ in January 2017 had Fat Ashley listened to him!

    RIP expat terrible news!

Forget gks let’s get strikers and no10 in ASAP! On Townsend I would take him in a heartbeat although 20m feels a bit steep. Kennedy was ok although he drifted in and out of games. Kennedy does have a lot more potential though so either would be fine.

Know it will never happen, but could do with both Kennedy and Townsend, cover for each other and both could play as a no 10 and Townsend even cover as a striker. Those 2 and a forward would be great business

Was saddened to hear about the passing of expatmag. Living in Australia he often posted at times when most bloggers were fast asleep. Had a few conversations / exchanges with him, always respectful and interesting. In my minds eye I always pictured him with a cool glass of white wine, sitting somewhere in view of the ocean. He had mentioned such a scene a few times when he posted! Cheers mate! Wherever you are I hope the wine is just so!
