It’s two weeks tomorrow when the players will report back for preseason training and by then Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez will be hoping the club have secured at least a couple of signings.
The Chronicle is reporting that Rafa had new talks last week with Managing Director Lee Charnley, and the former Liverpool and Valencia manager is all business and wants to make progress in the transfer window.
Benitez still has a good working relationship with Charnley and is in daily contact with him as they try to bring new players into the club and sell some players Rafa no longer needs at the club.
The general consensus in the local press is that Rafa has between £40M and £50M from Ashley to spend this summer – plus what he can get by selling players such as Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Matz Sels, Jack Colback, Henri Saivet and maybe Dwight Gayle.
Rafa Benitez – wants to see progress in the transfer window
We are supposed to be close to completing a deal to take Chancel Mbemba to Porto, but no fee has been agreed yet, with Newcastle wanting £8M.
It’s going to be another tricky balancing act for Rafa Benitez this summer, but he is not the type of person who sits back and complains about his plight.
Not many people are successful if they do that.
The Chronicle is reporting Rafa is still ambitious for Newcastle and will do his very best this summer given the constraints placed on him financially.
If we can get four or five good players into the club this summer – players Rafa wants – and transfer some of the players he doesn’t need – we could still have a much-improved team for next season.
That’s what Rafa is hoping for, and it looks like he will be very busy in these two weeks before the players report back for preseason training.
We need to see some real progress in the transfer window.
If anybody can be successful this summer, it’s the very impressive Rafa Benitez.
