News in the Northern Echo today that Newcastle have turned down the chance to sign striker Daniel Sturridge for £15M from Liverpool.
The one thing that’s worrying about Sturridge is his poor injury record and it’s a risk for any club to sign him and then try to keep him fit.
Newcastle were one of a number of clubs offered the 28-year-old former Manchester City and Chelsea striker.
Sturridge turned down a possible loan move to Newcastle last January so that didn’t help his cause and he signed instead for West Brom.
But he played only 6 times for the Baggies and didn’t score and had injury problems again as West Brom were relegated.
Daniel Sturridge – Newcastle turned down chance to sign him for £15M
He has a good scoring record at Liverpool in his six seasons there since he signed on from Chelsea for £12M in 2012.
He’s scored 64 goals and has 24 assists in 133 games so he can definitely put the ball in the back of the net.
The best chance for Sturridge this summer seems to be a move to Turkey with Fenerbahce interested in signing the former England striker.
But a big question mark with the deal is whether the Turkish club will pay the £15M fee Liverpool want for their striker.
But he’s not coming to Newcastle – that’s now certain.

Comment #1On Jack Wilshire, has anyone seen his stats for the last few seasons, in something like the last 4 seasons he has managed a total of about 4 goals and 6 assists, I accept that stats don’t always show the true picture and personally I never read to much into them, but in all honesty when they are as poor as his then you can’t really ignore them, keep well away as he is severely overrated, well he is in my opinion.

Comment #2On the Jack Wilshere news. He would be an amazing signing for us but can’t see it happening. The closest thing England have had to an ‘Iniesta’ type player in recent Years. Injuries aside he is a real talent but wages would probably be a big issue for Newcastle

your comment also fits Sturridge to a tee,
both these players come from the same mould and the maintenance costs would be prolific
both good players on their day unfortunately their days are few and far between

I think Wilshire could do us a great job if he avoided injury, linking up defence, midfield and attack all over the pitch but it’s never going to happen. I think we will see 4 or 5 additions come in at the back end of the window so Ashley can save himself a £million or so in pre- season wages

Comment #8£5m signing on fee all inclusive plus £70/week (Shelvey) on wages on a three year. Yes I’d take him.
Anything more, no.
Come 30 June we’re losing at least that on wages due to Haidara, Good and Gamez all leaving.

Rarity blah blah.
The only issue is his injury record and temperament, which I haven’t looked into enough.

Comment #12Delayed comment re Monday evening.
Henderson trying to pass like JJS and failing.
Walker, first time he had to defend he did it like Santon. Badly and facing in the wrong direction.
Stirling. Poor compared to his Man City form. However, at Man City he is playing with better players. They create more and better chances for him. Create more space and in higher areas of the pitch.
In England game he was often tightly marked in deeper positions and essentially just fighting to retain possession.

Comment #13For a short while Wilshire did look as if he could become a good player but he never kicked On, on rare occasions he still looked decent in a good Arsenal side but when at Bournemouth who are at a similar level to us he got found out, he was so bad he even lost his place in their side, he is an average player who has been hyped up due to playing for a fashionable London club.

Comment #15Why all this discussion on who we are going to buy etc, we arenot going to get players who want £100K + per week especially if they are sicknotes. Rafa and Ashley are in a Mexican standoff at the moment and is no good for us supporters.

You are correct that stats do not show everything. Wenger converted Wilshire into a holding midfield player in 2015/2016 season. He then went on to play the same role at Bournemouth. Not saying we will get anywhere near signing him but I still rate him as one of England’s better midfielders.
Also like his attitude the fact he was prepared to take a wage cut but as the new manager would not guarantee playing time he has decided to move on. Colback and co. Should take note.

Comment #17Wilshere apparently wanted 8m euros per year to go to besiktas. Pretty much rules us out. I wouldn’t be happy with his signing, think he is good but overrated and what’s the point of signing someone to play 5 games a season! May as well bring in balotelli on a free, less risky move.

Comment #18A couple posters suggested yesterday that we haven’t made any moves for players as it is before July 1st. That’s fine I guess, but there is nothing to stop them putting bids in and agreeing deals in principle to go ahead after the 1st. this non movement in the transfer window is a joke.

Comment #20Wilshire and Sturridge are the same thing. Both have HUGE talent but they are never fit long enough to find true form. For the wages they’ll demand and the game time they will be able to play it’s not a good investment. Rafa will know this, Ashley will certainly think it.

Comment #22Now this is real transfer news. Well at least it’s a fact not fiction.
Carlisle United have given a contact to Macaulay Gillesphey released by NUFC.
Manager John Sheridan has made a very familiar face his second capture of the summer as he brings defender Macaulay Gillesphey back to Brunton Park – this time on a permanent two-year contract.
Gillesphey, 22, initially joined the Cumbrians on a short-term loan deal in September 2015 as he came highly recommended from the north east.

Comment #23People saying Wilshere is a waste of space because of his lack of game time etc….He played 38 games last season? Hardly a waste of space. A completely different level player to anyone we’ve been ‘linked with’ so far. Rafa would probably jump at the chance to sign him but would the club show ambition to get him? 110% never. Good luck to him at West Ham or Everton or even that huge powerhouse club erm….Wolverhampton Wanderers

Comment #24I like both Jack and Daniel but we cannot afford to have players in the treatment room, these two will be great for clubs who have large squads which we don’t. We need to sign hungry, creative resilient players who can play 30+ games a season. These two plays will be after 100k a weeks, let’s use those funds on players who will be available for section for the whole of the season.

Comment #25I’m reading many comments suggesting JW and DS will be demanding £100k+ wage packets…I just cant see this happening. Neither are in a position to demand such a wage considering their stats over the last couple of seasons.
Sturridge knows where the goal is when fit, but can he stay fit?!
Jack, I agree with most, he has great ball control, can pick a pass like JonJo and link play throughout the team.
I’d take Jack, and I’m 50-50; loan for DS (if we get rid of Joselu)

Comment #26My advice is to ignore these links, they can only provide stress and anguish. Nobody in the press has a scooby doo what Rafa has in mind because it hasn’t been revealed. The result, as always, is they make it up.
The last we heard from Rafa was his interview with the Spanish football pundit where he revealed that he and Ashley get on far better than anybody thinks. Until I hear different from the man himself, that is how it stands for me.
These links are in the main speculation and fantasy. Yet already we’re hearing how we’ve missed out on targets – most of which bring a sigh of relief if I’m honest.
Nobody has a clue what is happening behind the scenes whilst we wait for the cash to go in, but from what we do know of Rafa, it is highly unlikely he is twiddling his thumbs or allowing Penfold to sit idle. Both will be working with agents, players and clubs to set things up. What I suspect won’t happen is for Rafa to let slip who he has his eyes on. To do so before he has the money would be extremely unprofessional and if there’s one thing he is, it’s professional.
Ignore these spurious links. They’re from journalists with nothing better to do and column inches to fill.
Come on. Sturridge? Really? Yet it was everywhere. Ex Liverpool so one plus one equals three. Lazy journalism.

Comment #29You only have to look through News now Newcastle to see how clueless they are.
“Newcastle must forget this player and sign this one”. “So and so is the ideal player for Rafa and he must blow others out the water to sign him” – usually someone who’s just had one decent game in the World Cup.
“85% of Newcastle fans want such and such”. It’s a joke.
For one, what we want is totally irrelevant. It’s who Rafa wants that matters and because he’s keeping quiet they make it up. Don’t be drawn in. It’s all BS.

Comment #30Jail, their falling out came a fair bit after that as I recall. Right now, I prefer to believe Rafa before anybody else when it comes to Rafa. I suspect he knows far more than us. Any of us.
The problem is people believe what their agenda dictates, instead of listening to the man himself.

Comment #35Jail, like me mate, you don’t have a clue how they get on. None of us do, which is why we can only go on what he says. Why would he lie? What is there to gain by lying about how they get on?
Let’s wait and see what happens when the money goes in and when sales happen. Once he’s got money we’ll find out who he wants to buy and he won’t be shy in saying he isn’t happy if that’s the case. He speaks his mind.

It’s not BS mate, it’s close season banter, expressing a likeness and wishing that we would buy or would not buy a certain player is not B.S. it’s a view and a wish, there is very little factual happenings at present so what is the harm in expressing a view on certain links, now as for Wilshire I’d say no, others would say yes, I’m not right nor wrong, no one is as it’s just idle banter, so where is the harm.

Comment #37Toon Rich, Ings all day long mate. 🙂 Sturridge is probably going to struggle to find a club now after the West Brom fiasco. He’s clearly as soft as clarts and won’t play through the pain barrier. That’s no good to anybody. Very few players are 100% fit at any time.
Ings gives it his all.

Spot on and never more so than when press are desperate for column inches.
Even before Rafa arrived the club have a longstanding reputation of not announcing their interest in players and it would be foolish for Rafa do so if July 1 when first tranche of money is received is an issue and he is no fool.
The waiting for funds is as plausible an explanation as others bandied about. Ashley has said that he won’t put in his own funds so unless sales or further instalments from previous deals already made have been recieved club is waiting for PL funds. Announcing potential done deals before player(s) actually signed is asking for trouble – Remy ( buy) or Sturridge (loan) for example
Yeah silence could be due to the oft perceived problem of the holder (s) of finances but there is also the perennial difficulty in shifting higher wager earners. Some have left as their contracts ended this month so that is good but there are still others who I doubt we will shift like Colback. Not blaming him – unless a decent alternative or similar wages presents itself would you just go anywhere?
As I understand it Rafa can juggle to a reasonable extent but is faced with a chicken and egg scenario – does he have to get some players out and wages freed up to both be able to buy but also to ensure he isn’t left with a top heavy squad. It is naive to think the club can carry unwanted players on high wages and bring in new players without their being a restriction.
Rafa must by now realise how it works at club and as long as he is still in place if only for a year I am not for panicing as yet.
