Newcastle Move Closer To Making Second Signing Of The Summer

Italian outlet TuttoMercato are reporting that Newcastle will have to pay around £14M if they want to get Juventus central midfielder Stefan Sturaro.

Newcastle are reported to have already bid around  12M   (£10.5M), so we are withing £3.5M of meeting the Juventus price for their 4 times capped Italian international.

And with 21-year-old Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino likely to leave the club this summer it becomes essential for Rafa to bring in at least one new central midfielder.

Newcastle have been scouting the Italian for the last year and so if he is a target for Newcastle – which the Chronicle have reported he is – then surely we need to go back in and raise our offer for the midfielder?

25-year-old Juventus central midfielder Stefan Sturaro

Here is a piece from the TuttoMercato article:

“The first offer of Benitez, a real director of the operation, is €12M. Wide scissors (wide of the mark?), because the request is €20M. Possible, however, to be halfway between.”

Halfway between €12M and €20M is €16M which is £14M

Maybe a bid of around £12.5M could clinch the deal, but Newcastle must move some of these transfer discussions forward for their summer targets.

Or else it could turn out to be like last summer when many of the moves for our targets got stuck in the mud – so to speak.

Newcastle are either still interested or else they should move onto other targets if we will not pay the transfer fee.

But it could also be we are getting near to the signing of Stefan Sturaro if only the hierarchy will show some initiative and drive.

There are other clubs interested in the player.

So if it’s true that Rafa wants him at Newcastle, we hope the hierarchy will pay out the money and get Stefan Sturaro to the club as our second signing of the summer.

Comments welcome.

    RobLeeni,
I think Munster’s continuous fair minded and well balanced criticism of everything our manager does wrong is bordering on harassment, from a Rafalite’s point of view mind!

We waste so much time trying to be clever in our transfers. So much so, that we almost always end up the losers in recent years.

It will be a sad state of affairs if we are waiting for a bidding war om Mitro once Serbia are knocked out, especially if they end up being a surprise team.

I suppose in terms of wheeling and dealing this lad is currently better than Merino and seems fitter and more physically suited to the English game?

Merino in the last 3 or 4 months has not shown anything since his injury and permanent contract he has looked really unfit when coming on in games and was getting caught on the ball quite a lot so maybe Rafa thinks okay I can upgrade him with this guy with minimal outlay!?

Potentially could move Hayden to 4th choice centre back/Utility player and use the Mbemba money towards Ozyakup ?

I don’t know what to make of this summer mate as there is nothing coming out of the club from any source to note.
Whether something is in the offing regarding takeover,Or Ashley is yet again stamping his feet of authority… Who knows.
All I know if we are having to wait on money coming in from player sales ,Then I think we are yet again in trouble and have absolutely no chance on keeping the only hope we have at the club in Rafa Benitez

The only solace is that there are a few other clubs that haven’t done any business yet, hopefully the silence from Rafa is just that he’s on a well earned holiday.

Also how can you get a striker that can guarantee 15 goals a season in England?

Aguero , Kane , Lukaku are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head that have guaranteed that for at least 4 or 5 seasons at the moment all of those strikers would cost 100 million minimum

Everyone else does it for a season and then has an off season and those guys cost 20 or 30 million at the moment maybe even more ! Guys like your Vardys, Kings etc

i think it’s more likely that we are waiting for the july first sky payment,
but on the other hand there’s definitely been a clamp down on leaks from within the club make of that what you will.

hibbit, whatever the reason, it’s more than a clamp-down on leaks, there’s been nothing official in the press either since Rafa’s interview with Guillem Balague, released on the 26th May (recorded who knows when)

That’s 27 days without a peep from club and manager. That’s an orchestrated campaign – radio silence or communications blackout, call it what you will, but it’s official for sure.

I hope you are both right and things will start to move regarding incoming transfers.
Because believe me I have completely lost faith with Ashley and his side show bob doing anything ambitious for Nufc.
Ashley has lost all interest in the club now and doesn’t even entertain home games. His love for money has wrecked the club from top to bottom,And have little faith anything will change under his tenureship

The positive for me is that Rafa’s message via Balague was so upbeat. I think he knew we were in for a period of no communication and tension over transfers and his contract would only grow and signed off on a high purposefully.

Bunga, I think Hayden will be gone. I’d totally forgot about him, but why keep someone worth 7-8m??? if he’s going to be so far down the pecking order. I’d consider loaning because I think he will improve still and go up in value. He seems ready made for Southgate so maybe he’ll even get called up. But if we can use that money to get Sturrano or the Stoke guy then that will probably be best.

Anyone not an immediate starter or with the potential to be has to be considered for sale. Clark would be gone for me (bring in that big guy), Atsu too (Kenedy), maybe Darlow if there is better. I’d also consider a good bid (15m) for Ritchie while his form is decent (providing Benitez thinks this Rodrigues is better)

I agree that anyone who wasn’t in the starting eleven at the end of last year excluding Armstrong and woodman should be seen as potentially up for sale. If you replace your worse players with first team ready players you improve the squad 2 fold and create competition. If you get rid of a starter for a speculative better starting player you still have poor competition for the place and don’t improve the squad as much. With that in mind we have at least 15 players that could be sold.

I know Lee Ryder is not the best reporter but he does have a lot of contacts in the club. He surely would have heard a whisper if there was takeover. No way would he suppress a story like this as it would be an exclusive!

    RobLeenio,
f the spending is similar to last season with the bare minimum spent the way Ashley likes to do business then it’s fair to say that Rafa won’t be signing a new deal. I’m not sure if he’ll be able to replicate that same team spirit if everyone knows he’s off at the end of the season, it will not only be a blow to the team as a physical blow to the team quality but a psychological blow to the ambition shown to the players. A team that managed fifth one season were scrapping relegation the next purely down to an owner that in so many actions said to them improving is not part of the game plan.

IF there is going to be a takeover it will be an American ownership.not that I’ve heard anything but Ashley is spending a lot of his time in America.

Re lee Ryder. If he does know anything, I believe he would keep quiet, knowing the backlash he could get from club officials.

Sorry for the repost guys but it took a technophob like me ages to type!!! 🙂

As you guys have been saying about a takeover, i am thinking quite the opposite which will hopefully spark a decent discussion without getting blackballed!
    ?

My reasons for thinking he is staying (Ashley) is because the prices have risen and there hasn’t been much fanfare from the fans regarding this from what I’ve been reading. I think this might be a Rafa idea that has been approved to allow possibly an increase in the salary restrictions. I think (hope?) we may see a couple of marquee signings because of this, there may well be money to spend and I think Rafa will be allowed to spend it, I see the silence on his part as a positive as he isn’t the type of man you can put a gagging order on, no matter how the powers that be try, I believe the guy is enjoying a very well earned rest with his family as when he resumes he doesn’t relent much, he is probably locked in a futuristic room somewhere downloading every little thing from the world cup into that amazing footballing brain of his such is his passion for the beautiful game… If there was something to worry about I think he would let us know… Now if there was something to get excited about the cat would still be in the bag… He’s very good at dealing under the radar!

Some might say that is the definition of blind faith though!!! Haha

So I’m that case I guess the players will not as such report back for training, instead we will have to wait and see who gets on the plane which thirty or so will it be… any senior players not on that plane will be sold or loaned out I’d expect. Hopefully therell be a new face or two in that group. Can’t see colback being in that group and also mitro will be resting / sold I expect.

Jail, yep couldn’t agree with you more – in terms of the future health of the club, everything hinges on Rafa committing to a new long-term deal, but he doesn’t have to sign that this Summer, he does have 12 months (virtually) remaining on his current deal. Obviously it helps the blood pressure to get these things sorted sooner rather than later.

Interesting that Dubravka stated on the 24th May that his signing was dependent on Rafa confirming his future, then he signed on the 30th June after Rafa apparently texted him personally. This time frame coincides with the club and Rafa going deathly quiet.

I’d give my right ball to see what that text said.

I suspect it’s Operation Bare Minimum once again. We finished comfortably mid-table without the usual end of season dramas. Ashley will expect Rafa to stay for a final year and deal with Rafa’s long-term future, or not, in 2019.

Ashley has bought a huge mansion / complex in Florida and is obviously going to be spending a lot of time there. That means one of two things for us :-

He is no longer interested in the club as a hobby / passion and is preparing to sell. Or he is planning to keep it as a frugally run self funding operation from which he can cream off lots of commercial revenue.
