This is an excellent signing in many ways – he’s a decent player and a leader.
But it’s commercially also a great signing to extend our appeal out to the far east and open up potential for new sponsors, shirt sales etc…

Just out of curiosity (and ignorance) why he was on a free. Why did his contract run out without renewal. Was it him or the club?

It’s good to see one over the line, I’m no more than ‘fair play Rafa, you’ve flanked us there’ good tidy intelligent player, some of the vitriol being spouted though would need to wait until season starts, let’s play this by ear lads before getting pitch forks out… 2 weeks of world cup left and 6 weeks to season start!!!

Is ki the signing we were all hoping for? No. But, rafa has stated he wants to build a squad that can not only comfortably finish top 10 but challenge for a trophy as well. He has alot of experience, is very neat and tidy in possession and rafa will certainly improve him as a player. He will certainly add good depth and you can’t go wrong with a freebie.

Wow. He’s not been touted as the big summer signing and Benitez thinks he will fill a need. I bet the same sniffling whiners who justified Mitrovics world class pedigree because”he’s the only player we have in the world cup” are the same ones bitching and screeching about this lad being underwhelming and so-so. At least he’s a captain of a team that beat Germany. And the Sunderland thing? How good do you think a meringue would taste if you dropped it in a cow pat? I hope he does really well and adds a fresh option in midfield. Then you girls can put your doll’s heads back on and play nice before bed time. 🙂

He was Swansea’s PoY in 2015. He’s the international captain. He’s a good squad player for us with bags of PL experience.
He’s not Kenedy but I’d have him on the bench any day ahead of Hayden.

    Take a deep breath folks
    This is a shrewd signing
    Welcome Ki Sung-Yueng
He’s an International player with considerable Premier League experience.
Koreans are very passionate people and this guy already understands what NUFC is about and will make his presence felt on the pitch which is what we always ask.
And in case it had escaped your attention at 6’2″ he’s going to be a very useful addition to our defensive wall.
We now have Dubrovka, Ki Sung-Yeung, Perez, Yedlin and Lejeune to show that Newcastle United is an internationally minded Premier League club so adding Kennedy and the elusive striker to the team is a well thought out strategy adding to the talent of Lascalles and the rest of the squad. That can only be an attractive consideration alongside Rafa, 52,000 fans inside the impressive SJP for those yet to arrive.
Build it and they will come.

By comparison West Ham could be playing games behind closed doors, Everton are forever in the shadow of
Liverpool and have yet to start building a new stadium.

Hold on, am I missing something here? How on earth are people unsatisfied with this signing?

He’s free, he’s extremely experienced in this league, he has leadership credibilities and he adds good squad depth to the team.

For once we are pro-active with a replacement and people still find ways to be disappointed.

He’s not going to be the only signing either, quit your whining.

This is a cracking signing for us and to think we got him for free and he has played for that other top side Sunderland
Very impressed how nufc have got him before the two Manchester clubs I had heard arsenal were in for him but he didn’t want to play for there 3rd team although he was promised a game in the league cup
I do think the next signing will out do this one though it will be difficult but I am sure it can be done
    Ash out

Good signing…signing berisha/Özyakup as backups for Ayoze or Shelvey would have been far more expensive and arent necessarily better options

Ki’s decent defensively, strong on the ball..his left foot is just as deadly as his right. yes, merino has promise and potentially higher ceiling in the long run…but Ki’s the finished product. I liked merino as much as anyone…but he showed some naivety in defense at times and drop off in quality of play in the 2nd half of the season was worrying

I think we’ll still see at least 3 new signings this summer. LW, DM and of course, FW

So if we’d paid £10m for some Turkish midfielder we had never heard of you would be delighted because the club was showing intent! However pick up an experienced Premiership player on a free and it’s embarrassing and garbage – sheesh it beggars belief!
Whatever you think of KSY it tells me that Rafa is in control of transfers and also we can move quickly when required!
