Report – Andros Townsend Coming In To Replace Matt Ritchie

The Sun are reporting today that Newcastle are in talks with Crystal Palace on a potential £18M transfer of Andros Townsend back to Newcastle.

For £18M that would be a decent buy and is only a £5M premium on what we sold Andros to Palace for two years ago – in this world of ever-increasing transfer fees.

However, we doubt that Palace will agree to that fee.

The Sun are reporting that Townsend is being brought in because Matt Ritchie is set to join Stoke for £15M this summer.

That’s difficult to believe because Matt will not want to leave Newcastle and certainly not to Championship club Stoke.

He could rejoin Bournemouth, but he’s very settled on Tyneside with his family.

We would like to see Andros back at Newcastle because he’s a proven PL winger when coached by Rafa Benitez.

However, we would also like to keep Ritchie at the club.

And we still want Robert Kenedy back from Chelsea if we can get him for say £20M.

If Ritchie will move to Bournemouth and we can get both Kenedy and Townsend to the club that would be excellent business by Rafa Benitez.

The manager seems determined to get players into the club in the next week or two.

If Ritchie is sold then it shows Rafa is willing to wheel and deal in the transfer market this summer and hopefully will end up with a much-improved squad for next season.

That’s what we all want to see.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Get him back! He’s got no loyalty but he’s quality and gives 100% every game!

Apparently Troy Townsend told his son Andros
he was a “damned fool” for leaving Rafa for Pardew
I think AT ended up agreeing with his dad.

Shaqiri for Ritchie would be a more sensational story for the hacks but they’ve already decided they want Shaqiri to go to Liverpool because they say so and it’s the club they supported as boys. But then again Everton, West Ham or Southampton might get him with wages of £120,000 a week.

Ritchie in his right mind wouldn’t go anywhere near Stoke as there’s nothing attractive about that deal or that place for him or his family.

So that leaves us with the notion that the Townsend rumour is to put pressure on doing the deal for Kennedy.

I would take him for 18 million if we could get 15 million for Ritchie… But we won’t get that much for Ritchie and Palace if they are even willing to sell probably want 25 Million…. Sigh

Townsend to replace Ritchie. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS !
Matt Ritchie wants to play for and be at NUFC you can see that every time he steps on the pitch in Black & White. Townsend couldn’t get out the door quick enough when we were relegated supposedly to a bigger and better club !
Matt Ritchie ANYDAY for me rather than Townsend the traitor.

No point signing both Andros and Kenedy as Andros played mostly as a left winger for Rafa (and imo why we saw such an improvement from him). If we sell Ritchie we need a quality right winger with Andros is not. Hopefully Murphy can become that but i wouldn’t want to rely on him with no back up quite yet. Apparently Rafa has £50m as a budget with 5-8m gone with the 2 signings made. With Merino (12m), Mbemba (10m), Mitrovic (20-25m) to be sold plus possibly other that should rise to £90m to spend still. Kenedy and Sturano for £35m between them, Moussa Dembele from Celtic for £20m, hope Man U sign the left back they want so we can try for Luke Shaw at £15-20m and finally a young centre back who can improve the way Lascelles has under Rafa. Maybe Lemos from Sassuolo or similar. Obviously if we sell we’ll need to reinvest the money wisely. While i’d love to sign another striker, a right back who can compete with Yedlin and maybe even a ball winning midfielder i’d prefer to sign a few quality players than a lot of ok players. We’ve tried that in the past and it rarely works
