Newcastle are being linked with 25-year-old Nice striker Alassane Plea, who scored 21 goals in 48 games for Nice last season.
But in the previous three seasons, he scored only 23 goals in 96 appearances, so he hit the heights for the first time last season.
He is said to be attracting interest from at least four other Premier League clubs – Everton, Spurs, Fulham and West Ham and some offers have been tabled for him already.
25-year-old Nice striker Alassane Plea
The Sun are reporting that Spurs put in a £23M bid for him last month and if that’s the case Newcastle will have little chance of signing the French striker – he would be too expensive.
That’s assuming the Sun report is accurate.
West Ham appear to be the club most anxious to sign him, and we have no idea who Rafa’s top striker choices are for this summer.
But it will not be Nicolai Jorgensen who looked nothing like a £20M striker for Denmark in the World Cup.
Danny Ings is available from Liverpool for a reported £9M, and he would be less of a risk than Plea who would need to adjust to the Premier League.
We would expect Rafa to be interested in Danny because of the reasonable fee and that he has been after the former Burnley striker for over a year now and must rate him.
If the news that Plea would cost £25M from Nice is true we don’t think Newcastle will be able to compete.
But we’ve been wrong before – just once or twice.
