News today that Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie is one of Stoke City’s top summer transfer targets this summer.
It would be a surprise if Rafa lets him go but he could if he can get both Kenedy in from Chelsea and Andros Townsend in from Crystal Palace.
That would mean two speedy players on both wings with Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy pushing for a starting place.
Stoke manager Gary Rowett wants to sign good players so he can immediately challenge for promotion next season and Matt is a star in the Championship.
Matt Ritchie – we’d be sorry to see him leave
In Newcastle’s promotion season he played 48 games and had 16 goals and 9 assists and was one of our star players.
In fact he was our Player of the Season in the promotion year with 59% of the vote.
His former club Bournemouth are also interested in buying him, but Rafa will want at least one new winger brought in this summer before he will allow Ritchie to leave the club.
Newcastle are reported to be negotiating with Chelsea for Kenedy and with Crystal Palace for Townsend, so it’s all hands to the pump at the moment on the transfer front.
If Matt does leave Newcastle then a move to Bournemouth could be the best career move for him.
Matt could return to his former club an remain in the Premier League as a much better player, and we’re sure manager Eddie Howe would love to have him back.
He’s very popular at Newcastle and is a leading voice in the dressing room, and he’s been a fabulous acquisition for Newcastle.
Rafa is being forced into this wheeling and dealing because of the reported shortage of money at the club, and he has to find some way of ending up with a better squad than we had last season.
The positive thing is we have already signed two excellent players in Martin Dubravka, and Ki Sung-yueng and both are strong characters too.
In fact, it would not be too much of a surprise if it turns out to be a decent transfer window for us this summer.
There – I’ve said it!
