Newcastle have brought two players into the squad this summer so far – both 29 year-olds – Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and South Korean Kim Sung-yueng – both excellent acquisitions.
But Rafa is looking to get at least four more top class players through the door this summer – a right back, an attacking midfielder, a winger and a striker.
He will need a right back to challenge DeAndre Yedlin although local lad Paul Dummett could also could do with some additional competition at left-back.
With both full-backs Jesus Gamez and Massadio Haidara not being retained, we could even see Rafa bring in two full-backs this summer.
Rafa Benitez – wants at least four more first teamers this summer
An attacking midfielder is needed to challenge Jonjo Shelvey, and we expect local lad Jack Colback to leave this summer – he has no future with Rafa as manager.
Ki Sung-yuen can play attacking midfield, but he’s usually a defensive holding midfielder – so we’ll see who may come in.
At last one winger is needed and Newcastle’s first choice is Kenedy from Chelsea, but Rafa could also try to get Andros Townsend back at Newcastle from Crystal Palace – if he can sell Matt Ritchie for something like £15M.
And of course, we need a striker.
Newcastle are said to be after 25-year-old Nice striker Alassane Plea, and we have rekindled our interest in West Brom’s Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon.
Danny Ings is also available from Liverpool for a cheap looking £9M so Rafa could also go after him, but he doesn’t seem to be a current priority.
We could even see Rafa bring in two strikers this summer and if that happened, he might decide to sell Dwight Gayle as well as Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Both strikers seem to be in demand with several Championship clubs keen to sign Dwight Gayle.
So Newcastle seem to be in full flow in the transfer market at the moment, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
SoWe need to see those signings coming in – soon.
