Stoke City are keen to buy Matt Richie for next season, and the news is they have offered him £75K/week to join them.
That’s about £30K/week more than he’s getting at Newcastle but Matt would have to take another step down in leagues as he did when he joined us two years ago from Bournemouth.
But it’s hardly surprising Stoke want the player and are willing to pay him huge wages.
Promotion straight back to the Premier League can earn the Potters an extra £100M in the first year back.
Two of our best players in the Championship – Matt Richie and Dwight Gayle
That’s what Newcastle did two years ago, but it’s a risky business spending lots of money because you must get promoted quickly.
Aston Villa are living proof that if you don’t make it back quickly you can quickly get into financial trouble.
So it’s not really surprising that ambitious Stoke want Matt but Newcastle have quickly turned down their offer of £15M for him – reported in the Chronicle.
Newcastle know Matt is a valuable resource in the Championship and in our promotion season he was our Player of the Season with 16 goals and 9 assists – and involved in 25 goals.
So Newcastle will only sell Matt if they get a higher bid than £15M coming in for the former Bournemouth winger – who remains a huge favorite on Tyneside because of his guts, skill, and passion.
And striker Dwight Ritchie is in much the same position, and it would take a large fee from a Championship club for Rafa to part with the former Crystal Palace striker.
In our promotion season, Dwight scored 23 goals and had 4 assists so he was involved in 27 goals.
And he was injured with hamstring problems for most of the second half of the season and played in only 34 games.
It seems Rafa doesn’t want to lose either player, but if a silly bid comes in, he could sell.
And if Matt moves from Newcastle surely he will want to return home to Bournemouth and stay in the Premier League – a better player after two years on Tyneside.
The Cherries are one the clubs said to be interested in taking him back.
