We are told that Salomon Rondon has a relegation release clause in his contract which makes the 28-year-old Venezuelan striker available at a reasonable fee of about £16.5M.
He’s a good hold-up striker but doesn’t score a lot of goals and Newcastle also reported to also be pursuing 25-year-old Alassane Plea of Nice.
The Frenchman would appear to be our number one target if the recent news is accurate and that we have bid £20M for him.
That bid, however, was turned down by Nice who want closer to £26M for their player.
Salomon Rondon being fouled at St. James’ Park this year
The Shields Gazette today is reporting that Salomon Rondon is the number one striker target for Newcastle this summer.
Rondon did manage to score 10 goals last season in 39 total appearances, and 7 of those were in 39 Premier League appearances, but he doesn’t exactly score a lot of goals.
The good news is that Newcastle are very close to getting £10M for Mikel Merino who moves to Real Sociedad soon and £7M for Chancel Mbemba who will move to Porto.
Selling players is essential this summer to raise money for the incoming transfers.
And Newcastle have also turned down a £15M bid for Matt Ritchie from Stoke – so the Newcastle players seem to be in demand.
Maybe we can get both Rondon and Plea through the door which would probably mean that Dwight Gayle would be sold.
And he could fetch a very decent fee of maybe£15M from a Championship club.
Rafa is back in preseason training today, so we are hoping he will be interviewed in the local press.
