Rafa Cool On His Contract Situation – Has Talked To Ashley Face To Face

There is still no announcement this morning about Kenedy and the big news will be if Newcastle have managed to get an option to buy him next summer (or before that) in his loan contract.

But Rafa has also talked about the state of things at Newcastle and has revealed some things – for the first time basically since the season ended in mid-May.

Rafa has already held a meeting with Ashley face to face this summer – so that’s good.

Rafa Benitez – back at his desk last Friday at Benton

They discussed where he would like the Newcastle club to go and there are things Ashley must do to improve various aspects of the club.

Mike Ashley will know very clearly the club Rafa wants to build on Tyneside.

But not sure what he thinks about all of this – since he never says anything – which is part of his problem as the Newcastle owner.

Rafa made his comments during the annual Newcastle Foundation 1892 Cup which was held yesterday.

Rafa had this to say as reported  in the Chronicle when asked about the state of his contract talks:

“No, it’s fine. We spoke about the future and the possibilities, that’s it.”

“I said that we have to see how things are going and then we can sit down later on and discuss that.”

“I’d like to stay here for five years or 10 years if it’s possible because I can see the potential, the fans and the city.”

“Everybody needs to be pushing in the right direction.”

“But we have to do things like I imagine has to be done in a football club.”

“Yeah I was talking to him in the summer – face to face. It was fine. But we are still where we are.”

From what Rafa is saying it seems he’s using his contract as a leverage this summer so he can put together a good side – first things first.

And then if and when he’s satisfied with the state of things at the club and with Ashley’s backing he could sign the new deal – and likely to be a five-year deal.

But if he doesn’t do that then he could simply hang on until next summer when his contract runs out and he will get huge offers from some top clubs.

He’s proving at Newcastle that a manager of his skill and stature can still build a very good team without spending huge amounts of money.

It shows what a terrific manager he is.

It also shows Rafa’s relationship with Ashley is a lot better than fans think.

What do you think?

Munster when you corner Rafa, dont forget to ask him what on earth he was thinking with his negative tactics when we should have gone all out last year. And what was he thinking with poor signings like Joselu and Sels etc. I’m sure he’ll appreciate that. 😉

…oh and how come if he’s such a good manager he hasn’t got us to 5th like Pardew did….

There’s one quote in that Chronic piece that if recent, speaks volumes:-
‘Benitez also confirmed he’d told Ashley his thoughts, he added: “Yeah I was talking to him in the summer – face to face. It was fine. But we are still where we are.”

If that is a recent quote, it suggests to me that Rafa’s laid out his ideas and ambitions to Ashley and it seems that he’s wasted his time. ‘We are STILL where we are’ suggests that Ashley’s not inclined to go along with Rafa’s ideas – as evidenced by the lack of urgency in pursuing signings or even giving Rafa support by allocating him a budget that would enable him to make sure that negotiations are concluded swiftly.

Has Ashley showed two fingers to Rafa and the fans yet again? We can but wait to find out.

lesh @3 – You can interpret that phrase in quite a few different ways – Rafa’s English is excellent but I think he is trying to say “We are where we are” but adding the ‘still’ in makes it sound a bit more ominous!

“Fifteen of the 20 Premier League sides in 2018/19 have broken their transfer record in the last 12 months, although for one club the same transfer has topped their list since 2006.”

Speaks volumes doesn’t it as we all know which club that is.

Fat parasite out of our club!

If that is a serious question, you know very little about football!
Sorry if it was sarcasm; it’s difficult to pick up the thread when you don’t spend your life on the blog! I suspect your question was genuine however!

hibbit, lesh, martoon, Jib, I share your skepticism, though that probably comes as no surprise at all. I do believe that these words were spoken by Rafa as the Chronicle attributes them to him at the Foundations Cup, which we know he was at yesterday, but he’s kept the answers very high level and ambiguous.

Stock answers to fill a void in communication. ‘Speaking to him in the Summer’ could mean any time back to April or even last Summer, in reality – very vague and purposefully so probably.

I see Ronaldo has gone to Juventus…. Always dreamed of him playing for the Black & White stripes.
Unfortunately in this case the wrong one, ah well one can only imagine.

If the Kenedy situation is a done deal why has there not been an official announcement. They even stretch out a loan deal for goodness sake.
Also why make him come up by train – pamper him and get plane.
Really pulling stops out for him
Or maybe I have missed something
