Rafa Upbeat On England – Great Chance To Win World Cup

Rafa Benitez is not a fan of the World Cup because he thinks there are too many countries playing in the Group stages and their quality is sometimes poor.

The main reason there are more and more countries making the finals is …. money – of course.

But once it gets to the knockout rounds Rafa takes more attention and with top countries like Argentina, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and Spain not in the final four it’s a great opportunity for one of the remaining countries to win it.

That very surprisingly includes England, who weren’t expected to do well this summer but we deserve to be there on merit.

Rafa Benitez – arriving back at Newcastle last Friday

Rafa was not too happy that Spain were knocked out by host country Russia on penalties (4-3) and he talked about England yesterday when he was presenting trophies for the 1892 Foundation Cup on Sunday:

“I think they are doing well. I’m not normally a lover of the World Cup because it’s at the end of the season, with too many teams in the group stage,”

“It is only when you pass the group stage when you lose the teams who are not at the right level, that the World Cup really starts for me.”

“England has a lot of good players and have done well. It is strange because you don’t have Italy, Germany, Spain, and Portugal.”

“Some were knocked out before, some have gone out early – but that is great for England because they have a great chance to win the World Cup.”

The other country missing is Argentina (2) and with Italy (4), Germany (4), Brazil (5), and Spain (1) missing they have won the World Cup a collective 16 times.

France and England have won it once each so maybe one of those countries gets to win it a second time on Sunday?

Whatever happens, England are already ultra-successful and the young team has put us back on the World stage – so they have absolutely nothing to lose – go for it!

Comments welcome.

Easy there on us old people Jesper! Btw why are you using words like “lulz” when you know old folk, who are slow and dangerous behind the wheel as you know, don’t understand such cool hip zany sayings as you hep-cat daddy-o’s do?

Us older people have a gay time doing things like playing skittles, rolling hoops and having faggots for dinner and are not wicked at all thank you very much!

Rebecca from earlier. Assuming you are in the UK you were diddled with your card. Jail House Rock was No.1 in Sept 57 in the USA. However in this country the Single wasn’t released until early 1958 and so was No.1 in the UK charts end of January and beginning of February. and I was born at the end of January. Generally when discussing a song that was No.1 you normally mean in your own country not the US!

Jesper – all ageist insults and what not apart… When you are criticising the purchase of certain players, what is your ultimate point?

    1/ Who is responsible
2/ What should be done about those players and
3/ the person responsible for getting them?

Honestly is there any defence for the pathetic showing of Carl using his various guises to pop at people? Those who say it’s ok they “don’t care he can have as many alternates as he likes” etc are probably the same people who watch next doors dog take a massive dump on their front lawn and say “well never mind it’s a free country..”

    Gasper. From last post…

“old people with too much time on their hands”

Was it necessary to post such an ageist comment. Time you grew up, (he added, ironically)

Since retirement, I’ve never been busier! Not enough time in the day to even change a nappy!

I may be old in years, but like an eighteen year old Scotch Whisky, I’m matured to perfection!

ps. You really must try and get out more, possibly go and watch a live sporting event, perhaps…

I see Tammy Abraham is available from Chelsea, could that be the other part of the jigsaw with Kenedy?

Jesper………. In my humble opinion you are under a lot of pressure domestically and need to chill out a bit. Maybe you have made a rod for your own back by trying to impress your wife who like most women now expects you to uphold the standard for the rest of your life.

Abraham’s been bandied about a bit at the moment alright. His price might be within our grasp considering the fairly poor season he just had. Not sure if his temperament might be a little suspect but would be a great option for a counter attacking side like us if Raffa can work his magic with him.

On topic if Rafa was talking about the WC then it does show that the interview was recent and not cobbled together old ones – that was suggested earlier!

Re Abraham, it could explain why we took Kenedy on loan (OK, are allegedly taking), in that either Chelsea refused to do a loan on Kenedy, or he would be cheaper so would fit in with our cash flows etc?

I would like us to get Abraham I think under Rafa and the way we play with Shelvey popping balls over the top of defences I think he would do well!

Depends on the price I guess as we would need to buy him outright!

Getting Kennedy before Sarri comes in might be lucky as I think he would quite like Kennedy as he likes his players to work hard and press for the ball

I missed this about SBR in The Guardian, worth a read.

Southgate’s team watched the film before the World Cup!

    It’s coming home.
