Jack Colback saw out his contract four years ago at Sunderland and then became a free agent signed by Newcastle on something like £40K/week.
And those inflated wages were because Newcastle didn’t have to pay any real transfer fee – although we may have paid a signing-on fee and agents’ fees.
That left the Sunderland hierarchy furious at the time.
Jack had been with them through their Youth set-up, and they got nothing for him because he was more than 23 at the time.
Jack Colback in Newcastle’s colors
Jack seems to be doing the same thing now and wants to see out his five-year contract at Newcastle and stay on the books of Newcastle until next summer.
He can do that by taking a loan move back to Nottingham Forest and stay on those vast wages.
We have to say that he has every right to do that and see out his contract.
And it appears that Newcastle will still need to augment those wages since Forest cannot afford to pay the full amount.
If that happens then Rafa will miss out on a transfer fee that could be around £5M.
And Newcastle are today reported by Sky Sports to be in communication with Forest about a possible deal – but it seems it’s another loan deal.
That means we will not get anything for him and he could become a free agent next summer.
The other complicating factor is Forest cannot get near those wages if they sign him permanently this summer.
But next summer they will offer Colback lower wages, and he could take them – if other clubs don’t offer him more.
Rafa seems to have given up on Colback so he may just want to get him to another club and that will be the end of the local lad at his hometown club.
It would have been good to get say £5M for him this summer, but Newcastle have other players we can sell and get decent fees for.
As the first example – Mikel Merino left the club yesterday for Real Sociedad, and we got £10M for him.
