The Mail is reporting that Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is interested in signing West Brom winger Matt Phillips who will probably leave relegated West Brom this summer.
It’s not the first time we have been linked with the 27-year-old former Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers winger.
Cardiff seems to be in the lead for his signature and are reported to be ready to make a £11M bid for the player.
In two seasons in the Premier League with West Brom after signing on for £5.5M from QPR in July two years ago, Matt played 63 games with 8 goals and 12 assists.
Matt Phillips in action for West Brom last season
Middlesbrough are the third club said to be interested in the player, but we’d be surprised if Rafa has any real interest in Phillips.
He may be on the long list of targets but not near the top of the list.
With Kenedy coming in for a season loan last week we seem to have our four wingers in place for next season in Kenedy, Ritchie, Atsu and Murphy.
The only change there could be if we sell Ritchie to Stoke City for £15M and bring in Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace as a replacement.
Not sure Rafa would let Matt go to Stoke for another winger coming to Newcastle in his place – such as Phillips.
Newcastle really need a fullback, a couple of creative forwards and a lethal striker.
Those have to be the priorities for the 26 days left in this transfer window.
And we hope Newcastle don’t go down to the final hours of the window trying to bring players in – especially for a striker.
