Newcastle Reported Interested In Former Target – But Is He Good Enough?

The Mail is reporting that Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is interested in signing West Brom winger Matt Phillips who will probably leave relegated West Brom this summer.

It’s not the first time we have been linked with the 27-year-old former Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers winger.

Cardiff seems to be in the lead for his signature and are reported to be ready to make a £11M bid for the player.

In two seasons in the Premier League with West Brom after signing on for £5.5M from QPR in July two years ago, Matt played 63 games with 8 goals and 12 assists.

Matt Phillips in action for West Brom last season

Middlesbrough are the third club said to be interested in the player, but we’d be surprised if Rafa has any real interest in Phillips.

He may be on the long list of targets but not near the top of the list.

With Kenedy coming in for a season loan last week we seem to have our four wingers in place for next season in Kenedy, Ritchie, Atsu and Murphy.

The only change there could be if we sell Ritchie to Stoke City for £15M and bring in Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace as a replacement.

Not sure Rafa would let Matt go to Stoke for another winger coming to Newcastle in his place – such as Phillips.

Newcastle really need a fullback, a couple of creative forwards and a lethal striker.

Those have to be the priorities for the 26 days left in this transfer window.

And we hope Newcastle don’t go down to the final hours of the window trying to bring players in – especially for a striker.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    I like this
    It shows the right spirit
On Thursday evening, Sean Longstaff was made to sing a song
by his Newcastle team-mates as part of his initiation – and
the midfielder chose Justin Bieber’s ‘Love yourself”

Despite describing that initiation ceremony as
the “scariest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life”,
Sean has cherished the experience of training
    with the first-team squad.

    Shite choice of song btw

    Quite often in football tournaments
it becomes obvious there’s a weak
side of the draw and a strong side

I think England came through the former

Not as high pitched as this version I hasten to add
    However
I still got soaked in beer

With reference to England, they made a good point on the panel. England will never be that team that can handle the best teams in the world because we don’t have a Modric, De Bruyne, Coutinho, Pogba, Silva, Kroos. Sad to say but very true, I cant think of any player that fits into any mold of the midfielders I have mentioned. Yes we know Jonjo should have been at the world cup, Duffgate for some reason does not like him but instead likes players like Dier and Henderson? So looking at this, seriously and without biased, is Jonjo the only English play maker honestly that can make the same style of through ball like Modric, De Bruyne, Coutinho, Pogba, Silva, Kroos? My mind is trying to think of someone like this that either should have been at the world cup or will be soon. Anyone have any other players apart from Jonjo?

    Nostradamus the Geordie,
Even if he had taken Shelvey I don’t think he would have given him a game, by the time we played Crotaia where a player like him was most needed he would have been so far out of the picture he wouldn’t have played him anyway.

    This is a weird one
NUFC have been linked with Matt Phillips
    right winger for WBA
same Christian name as the current incumbent
    both have played for Scotland
    11 months younger than Ritchie
is defo a more direct winger than MR

I was saying just that to a lad at work today. We were crying out for Shelvey against Croatia but he wouldn’t have played if he had been there anyway.

    Townsend’s not for sale.
    Nor is Ritchie.
Matt Phillips isn’t likely to go anywhere other than another Championship club.

That little saga of rumours has run it’s course.
Expect the Sunday rags to take a different tack next week.

6 shots on target for the tournament I read. These include 3 pens and a deflection.

He was phenomenal against Tunisia but a passenger thereafter. Someone needs to ask these questions because we need better if we’re to progress.

Glad u enjoyed a giggle jail. 4 hrs in car today. We had to get lunch but by the time we were served and ate, there was no sign of training which was disappointing. Wished I could have spoken more with Rafa but in reality I interrupted a phone call. So u can blame me when we don’t get ihenacho or someone. Disgusted with Ashley and I think I can safely say that the man I met today will be gone in a year. Two random observations, jonjo isnt exactly friendly and Rafa has very small hands. 🙂
