The Chronicle reported today that Newcastle have added to their scouting team with the addition of former West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers scout George Dixon.
He will now work under Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson with current scouts Mick Tait and Paul Baker already in place.
The Chronicle reports that Dixon has worked as a scout for over 30 years and has also worked on the continent looking for players of Premier League standard.
Steve Nickson – Head of Recruitment at Newcastle
Dixon is a local man and has scouted for both Hartlepool United and Darlington in the past.
Dixon is reported to have already started scouting for Newcastle in Ireland this week.
The report also says that Steve Nickson’s staff will concentrate more on bringing good young talent (between the ages of 14 and 20) to the club.
Nickson was put in charge of Newcastle’s recruitment by Rafa in July of last year.
It’s essential that we get some good young players into the club who can be coached to become first team regulars of the future.
But we have been very poor at doing that during Mike Ashley’s reign.
Rafa Benitez wants to change that.
And it helps with the finances as have seen with Isaac Hayden and Mikel Merino recently.
Isaac was signed two years ago from Arsenal as a 21-year-old for £1M, and he is likely to leave for up to £10M this summer to Brighton.
We also made a profit of £4M on Mikel Merino after we signed him last year for £6M from Borussia Dortmund and he left this week for a fee of £10M to Real Sociedad.
Obviously, we want to keep both players at the club and make them into top class players over time.
When that doesn’t happen, we can make a profit on them – which is good financially.
