Update – Newcastle Add To Their Scouting Team Under Steve Nickson

The Chronicle reported today that Newcastle have added to their scouting team with the addition of former West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers scout George Dixon.

He will now work under Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson with current scouts Mick Tait and Paul Baker already in place.

The Chronicle reports that Dixon has worked as a scout for over 30 years and has also worked on the continent looking for players of Premier League standard.

Steve Nickson – Head of Recruitment at Newcastle

Dixon is a local man and has scouted for both Hartlepool United and Darlington in the past.

Dixon is reported to have already started scouting for Newcastle in Ireland this week.

The report also says that Steve Nickson’s staff will concentrate more on bringing good young talent (between the ages of 14 and 20) to the club.

Nickson was put in charge of Newcastle’s recruitment by Rafa in July of last year.

It’s essential that we get some good young players into the club who can be coached to become first team regulars of the future.

But we have been very poor at doing that during Mike Ashley’s reign.

Rafa Benitez wants to change that.

And it helps with the finances as have seen with Isaac Hayden and Mikel Merino recently.

Isaac was signed two years ago from Arsenal as a 21-year-old for £1M, and he is likely to leave for up to £10M this summer to Brighton.

We also made a profit of £4M on Mikel Merino after we signed him last year for £6M from Borussia Dortmund and he left this week for a fee of £10M to Real Sociedad.

Obviously, we want to keep both players at the club and make them into top class players over time.

When that doesn’t happen, we can make a profit on them – which is good financially.

Comments welcome.

Ah hibbit, you’re on the offensive here as you’re another who was dishonest in posting during the takeover saga. One of those who refused to reveal sources. The refusal being a product of one themselves actually being the source. You do what you want to do lad. I’m just calling a spade a spade. No malice intended.

Dixon has started scouting in Ireland this week.
Now Rafa ” to be sure there’s a group of boys playing footy at some training camp over here, I think some of them might be worth a punt “

Wet Spam are flashing the cash this summer. They just signed Felipe Anderson from Lazio.

Hibbet, Shire, Micky, Bambams and everyone else, most of us are happy to hear what you have to say from what you have been told. Yes we might not accept everything as a given and just think it gives us a bit of hope. If it doesn’t come off, hardly your fault, you just passed on what you heard. From all of your other posts, the sensible people can see you are not attention seekers just fans like the rest of us, heard something and want to give other fans some hope. One day surely it has to change and what you have heard comes off. Thanks for the info I’ve always enjoyed hearing it. Unfortunately my days of gen from Newcastle are long gone, only get it about clubs down south, but let’s all just hope

We live in hope mate.Somethings amiss at Nufc..That’s all I can put it down to that as yet we have spent diddly squat. We all know Ashley has no problem in gambling with the club’s future as he proved in January when we were desperate for players yet brought in just loan players.
Either Rafa has accepted the fate of his time with us or something more positive is around the corner,Please God let it be the latter

Shirebrook – West Ham are a club full of crooks (possibly worse ownership than us), all these transfers are shady because essentially we are paying for them! The only way they can afford this is because they are paying nowt for their stadium and reaping all the benefits of it, bloody scandalous!

The hierarchy at Newcastle United have no ambition or vision for the club. It is a club on life support and that life support is Rafa. Once he is gone the club will nose dive again.

Money doesn’t buy success but put it this way, West Ham now have double the quality in their squad compared to ours. The difference in ambition is extraordinary. Imagine what NUFC could achieve with Benitez if only half that ambition was shown by the owner.

I believe that next week we will see some announcement of players being signed. The reason being is that some of the signings are still in Russia.
For what’s it worth I predict Loftus—cheek, Welbeck and a Croatian or Belgium or French player

Nothing to substantiate this, just a feeling and due to the lack of movement can only think it may all revolve around the World Cup.

Re cheek I have always felt he has been a favourite of Rafa and would hope he has agreed at least in principle to join us, as can’t see him being happy sitting on the bench after being picked for England.

I can’t see a future for welbeck being at arsenal so may see him as a cut price forward looking for game time.

Re the other players no idea.

    Conspiracy theory:-

How about knowing how litigious Ashley is, the club is tied into such waterproof contracts with Spoirts Direct (and MASH), that it’s pretty nigh on impossible to sell?

Ashley did this on porpoise to maximise his return if any rich group/individual wanted to buy the club – that way he could sell not only the club but the revenue stream for the 99 year contracts he’s signed SD etc. up to?

Sounds plausible? It does to me.

    Hence Stavely walking.

Something is definitely amiss at the club at the moment. The silence is deafening. Hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come but I’m not holding my breath.

Maybe we will see some movement in the transfer market this week due to the WC finishing. Or maybe it’s just another summer like all the others gone by!

Shire, Hibbitt et al – take no notice of the idiots – for me half the fun of this blog is people passing on itk information. If it turns out to be untrue, so what, it was still fun. However for what it’s worth I think a lot of the information you passed on had some element of truth but for whatever reason the deal broke down – probably Ashley being greedy.

Still ain’t enough though mate. Rafa can only do so much with the players he has at his disposal. Every other club will soon leave us behind and we’ll just sink into the lower leagues of English football

Just because Rafa is putting the things in place that normal football clubs have it is no indication that he is staying. He’s obviously very professional and is carrying on as he would normally, scouts, coaches etc are still needed to keep us in the PL, I think it’s blindingly obvious that Ashley is not going to do anything that might give us a chance of success. Rafa will go and he’ll get someone who can fudge along for a year or five then start the whole process again. What a sad state of affairs with this owner in charge.

All seems to me as though Rafa has made his decision and has one eye on leaving at the end of the season already. Less vocal this time around, less frustration (to the public) screams to me acceptance. He’s never broken a contract and is apparently something he proud of, and it will do his reputation even more good to guide us to mid table safety this year when it will be even clearer to the world that he was working on a budget akin to a bottom half Championship club, and has therefore worked wonders.

He then retains the love of the fans, can feel entirely justified in leaving and can chalk up a very successful 3 year period at a club presenting a unique challenge and that to his CV.

The only losers really of course will be us. As the proverbial will surely hit the fan come end of the season.

As Jail says – standard management is to do what needs to be done for the medium to long term as well the short. A true professional will always do that despite knowing they won’t be staying.

Rafa recruiting to the scouting team could mean nothing more than Rafa’s being totally professional during difficult times.

The scouting team probably needed some refreshment and don’t lose sight of what’s probably the reality that Ashley wouldn’t be too concerned at adding to that wage bill – after all, those recruits don’t require a big cash outlay up front whereas buying players does and that’ll be what Ashley not prepared to do.

I’m not convinced that anything’s going on behind the scenes. Instinct tells me that Ashley’s not prepared to give Rafa any transfer funds other than cash generated through sales. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ashley’s resigned to losing Rafa and is building up a cash pot for his successor – whoever, whichever gullible soul that may be.

However, Rafa’s doing his best while swimming again the tide that is Ashley, a lying, duplicitous, spiteful and greedy man.
