TalkSport are reporting that Uruguayan international Giorgian De Arrascaeta is interesting Rafa Benitez at Newcastle.
The 24-year-old currently plays for the Cruzeiro club in Brazil.
De Arrasceata started his career playing for Defensor Sporting in the Uruguayan Primera Division and made his first-team debut back in October 2012, when he was just 17.
He plays as an attacking midfielder with a vast array of skills and scored twice for Uruguay when they finished runners-up to France at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.
24-year-old Uruguayan international Giorgian De Arrascaeta
De Arrascaeta made his debut for the Uruguay senior team in a friendly match against South Korea in September of 2014 and currently has 16 caps with 2 goals.
He is reported to have a £18M release clause in his contract, and the report says that Rafa would be willing to pay that amount.
Wonder if that’s been OKd by Mike Ashley.
That’s a lot of money to pay for a player who has not been tested in the top leagues like the Premier League.
The report says that he almost joined Monaco last summer but couldn’t agree on personal terms, which is not thought to be a problem at Newcastle.
Celtic are the other club reported to be interested in the player and they could offer him Champions League football but 18M is a lot for the Scottish Premiership club to pay.
De Arrascaeta played a number of games for Uruguay in qualifying for the World Cup in Russia.
His brilliant form at club level meant that he was included in the final squad of 23 for Uruguay.
He seems exactly what Rafa said he needed this summer – players with class – and we assume he could play in the number 10 position at Newcastle.
Now the big question – can Newcastle move quickly to sign this lad up?
Probably not, but we hope so with only 24 days left in the transfer window and he would be a very popular signing with fans.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41I wouldn’t trust charnley putting £100m release fee in lascelles contract. He’ll get the decimal point wrong and it’ll be £10m instead.

It’s doing most people’s heads in. Championship clubs have spent more on one player than we have collectively spent over the last 3 windows.
It’s becoming embarrassing

Comment #44If it’s another shite window and it’s obvious that he’s not signing a new deal I’d rather Rafa walks in August like KK did to speed up the inevitable, the fat man has got absolutely no intentions of selling us, I reckon even if someone did come in with the ridiculous 400M he’d shift the goalposts again somehow. I’m footing sick of it all, it’s a bloody circus again.

I’m with ya 100% buddy as I fear that all Rafa has done and built at the club over the last few year will come tumbling down around us this time next year. Why oh why is Ashley screwing the club over ?? How many excuses do we have to listen to before that sinking feeling which is all to familiar comes to bear that yet again we have been shafted..Yet again in another transfer window

Comment #50Rafa is known world wide as a gentleman and genuine footballing person yet Ashley has blatantly sat down looked him in the eye and lie to him. He gave him everything he needed to get us back up then as soon as he thought the job was done he reared his ugly head, Rafa obviously was too taken by the fans and City to walk away after Ashley shafted him in the promotion January, there’s not a hope in hell he’ll be staying on if our business trundles along like this.

Comment #51I’ve thought varane has been one of the best defenders in the world past couple years, alongside godin, and despite not having the best of games in the final has shown this tournament that he is. What he’s won has been incredible, champions leagues (4), World Cup, la Liga, super cups etc. Still hasn’t hit his prime.
None of that would have happened if we did buy him when we were linked many years ago. Although there is nobody in the world of football thankful for mike Ashley, he has one supporter in varane!

You couldn’t be more wrong.
I remember well and thoroughly enjoyed the first round of Keegan days – despite the fact that the then owners of Newcastle United had and were making pots of dosh through their business interests – and NUFC. The difference between Shepherd, Hall and Ashley was that the first two showed their ambition by spending whereas Ashley…….
Don’t jump to conclusions Bettys.

Comment #54I don’t know much about football finances but would the TV money pay off the money Ashley “loaned” the club?
Could he be keeping it so there will be no debt if the club is going to be sold?
I want the scumbag gone so I’m living in hope that there could be something possibly going on and that’s the reason there’s been no money spent on new players.

Comment #55Rafa or no Rafa, if the window continues like this with nothing coming from Rafa that everything is under control then there’s going to be a weird atmosphere up there this season, I think tensions will be on a knife edge.

The club ”apparently” isn’t in debt, the debt is to him and any money he’s owed is incorporated in to the for sale price.

Did a double take when I saw Longstaff named for the U23s tonight but of course it’s Sean’s younger brother Matt.
Be good to see them playing together for the 1st team at some point.
