This may sound like a stupid question but when the wage bill for the championship squad was released it was mentioned that the dead woods wages were amortized in these figures. That to me means that it would no longer be a liability going forward, so does that mean that we won’t have the ‘deadwood’ salaries in future figures. I only ask as I’m a proper layman when it comes to accounts. Hopefully one of you fine fellows could shed some light?

This to me is a real grey area as the ‘wages’ seem to be incorporated into the player purchase figures which raises the question for me of why they get continually ‘recycled’ into future accounts… Could this be the creative accountancy we have been fearing?

Part of me wonders if we agreed to pay a certain amount of wages to get players off the books etc. Perhaps that is what it means.

Not being an expert, I’d say the provision for onerous contracts won’t go away as long as the deadwood’s there. It could reduce year by year – assuming no more deadwood’s added – I think! Happy to be corrected

Don’t forgot that the man who wrote the True Fsith article said that the provision doesn’t impact on the cash position.

What happens if a reputable company or organisation sponsors the Flags ?
Can they have their logo shown on the flags ?
Will the flags be allowed to be displayed by Ashley’s guards ?

Thanks guys, I’m a bit wet behind the ears when it comes to corporate accounting so any info is good info!

I just assumed that if they were accounted for in a previous years accounts then how do we keep seeing them pop up in future accounts…

No expert but would have thought wages would have to be in each year for current staff cost including wages still being paid for players moved on depending on the contract, so wages pay will change year by year but only for current costs for players and other staff

If we are doing creative accounting then so are all the other clubs. When you look at each clubs wages, it’s not like we are suspiciously higher than other clubs. They all seem too high. Must be the massive bonuses they get.

At 112m for our championship season it seems way off the mark. I’ve seen the he squad wage figure coming in at 65m for last season, I would seriously doubt staffing wage figures to be close to 50m when the MD gets a couple of hundred K’s a year!

Apparently Damian Comolli is flying into Newcastle to talk about taking Mitro to Fenerbahce on loan.

    https://turkish-football.com/club-official-set-crunch-talks-newcastle-13m-striker-aleksandar-mitrovic-comolli-already-entered-negotiations-super-lig-move-fenerbahce/

I don’t believe that for a second, why would the club loan him to Fenerbahce when we can sell him to Fulham? Smells of a cover story to me, just don’t know what it’s covering. Are we linked with any Fenerbahce players?

I can’t remember the specifics off the top of my head, but what was the accounting period for the accounts? Did it include part of a Prem Season, and part of a Champo season for the reporting period? Don’t have time to do the research, but I ‘think’ there was an overlap.

Cheers Jay, I remember those Skrtel links in January, I didn’t like them then and he’s 6 months older now….

Anyway, looks like we could be doing some business with Fenerbahce soon, unless we’ve poached Comolli as a new Director of Football which seems unlikely.

@Robleenio Id take him purely on the reasoning that our first choice pairing is water tight and Rafa had him at liverpool so us signing him would probably mean Rafa knows first hand hes a good personality that will work hard and not rock the boat who can do a job when required
Id avoid anything Newcastle related in Turkish or Portuguese media, agents from those countries love using newcastle as a leak to drive up prices as 1)we do our business is secret, so its rarely called out as wrong, 2) As a big club, to outsiders the potential of us paying 20m and 100k a week to a player is feasible and 3) Our fan base it big, but also obsessed and its gets world wide coverage and puts the player in the public eye which generates sponsorships, case in point Garry Rodrigues..never even heard of him before he was linked but now most toon fans will have watched him on youtube, know his age, career stats etc

@Robleenio – id Love to be a fly on the wall if Ashley ever hired Comolli…the biggest cheapskate in world football hiring the man who spent 55m on Carroll and Downing… Comolli loves overspending on a player..18m on David Bentley and 10m on Corluka too if i recall…
He was DoF at St Ettiene whom i follow from time in france quite closely, they gave him free reign and he nearly bankrupted them with bad signings that stayed on the books for years

    😉

I see what you’re saying about Skrtel, and I like Luiz for similar reasons, Rafa knows him he’s dependable, super experienced, could pass that on to our young Centre Backs and improve them. I’m just not convinced on Skrtel, but would welcome him with open arms at the moment.

its very difficult to find a good player as the champions league clubs hoard them, and if any team like everton or southampton find one, the big boys snap them up after half a season. not to mention any good player under 21 is stockpiled by chelsea. so many good players are wasted. this is especially true of english youths. the likes of rodwell going to city after 2 good games. he could have been the next delph off england’s conveyor line of “complete midfielders.” 😉

benitez has worked wonders in his scouting. the amount of failures hasn’t cost us. however if he buys a striker for 20-30m and he turns out to be a slimani or jorgensen it will financially outweigh many of his successes. we need to be careful. loan with option to buy is ideal.

For me, if we stay as we finished and add 2 new players to that team, that will be better and mainly it should be striker and no.10, we stayed as we were as we have signed Dubravka and Kenedy on loan. Merino didnt play enough and Ki was brought as his replacement, which I have no problem with. But to really kick on, we should bring striker and no. 10, starters. And cover full back, CB and CM (if Hayden will leave). We are waiting, I think on selling Mitro, Mbemba, Colback to add new players. And Townsend will be brought if Ritchie will leave, which would be slight improvement. We have no idea who are our main targets apart from Townsend and Rondon. Maybee Ruben Loftus Cheek, can he be our new no. 10? Or Rafa want to switch to 4-3-3 if we will bring him? What about this:
Dubravka – Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett – Shelvey, Diame, RLC – Townsend, Rondon, Kenedy…not bad for me, that will be good, cover players Manquillo, Clarke, new FB, New CB, Ki, Perez, Atsu, Murphy, Gayle, Joselu…

Problem with these fanciful “leaks” can be more long term as they tend to become part of the Blogs never ending list “The Ones Who Got Away” whereas most were never players we had actually bid for.

Enquiring about or watching a player doesn’t mean we intended to bid/buy. Club rarely if ever announce potential signings until there are in the bag ( or shirt). Although I am desperate for some new faces I am content with club carrying on in that manner and not getting hopes up unecessarily. Still keeping fingers crossed that the market might now get into gear and we are involved.

Papers have column inches ( even virtual ones) to fill and blogs and other online sites have to keep freshening up there posts so same old “rumours” get replayed across the net. Personally I am happy to leave the speculation to others unless it appears there is some truth there e.g. Mitro Mbemba Hayden.

who was the DoF at Southampton back when they used to find the best young players? i think it wouldn’t do any harm for us to get a great DoF, especially for after Benitez leaves. I don’t trust Penfold to find a good replacement, nor implement a good youth system. He seems like an OK tryhard who knows nothing about football.

“Rafa wants players who can hold the ball up, bring others into play, create space and close down defenders. This way, he’ll have goals from all other areas of the pitch and if the striker can chip in with a few, then all well and good.”

Other than closing down defenders, I think you’ve described mitrovic lol

As for funds Rafa may be harbouring what he has for the “right” deal and making up rest with clever frees and loans for now? Who knows not me or anyone else!

It is no good just pointing out those windows when Rafa here as we spent relativey high under McClaren and brought in a few players in the January window when relegation threatened i.e Sissoko. Happy to take a lead from Rafa and his demeanor is fine. OK could be seeing contract out but it is all speculation.

If i had 50m to spend at Newcastle i’d be looking at picking up certain younger players from Chelsea, Man City etc and giving them a platform to play and improve. Chelsea in particular have a number of players that have the ability to double to value of what they would cost that will all probably leave before reaching potential, similar to Saleh, Lukaku and Debruyne/// , Kenedy for one, Nathan, Pasalic, Van Ginkel, Miazga, Mount, Abraham, Brown, Palmer (not saying they’d be cheap)
Similarly, at Man City, Garcia, Zinchenko, Gunn, Roberts, Denayar will all probably go on to fulfil potential away from their current club. Zinchenko is never going to play his natural #10 position at man city in a month of sundays and is a super technical player with unlimited potential.

    Toonfan8,
My worry is that Mikey, who ”doesn’t really understand football, it confuses and upsets him, and when he is upset he does things that aren’t brilliant for the football club”, will not see the point in selling Mitro for 20M and buying a striker who definitely won’t sell for more than what we paid for him. If he thinks that Rafa should be able to use Mitro then we could see an awful Mexican stand off in which us fans will be the only losers.

I don’t think he was dof but I think Nicola cortese was there when Southampton were decent. He brought pochetinno and was huge factor of them coming back up the leagues and establishing themselves. Certainly is no yes man though and wouldn’t see Ashley hiring him or him accepting to work under Ashley.

I didn’t know lot about him but form the outside looking in, I rated him for the job he’s had done there. Another chairman/dof/chief executive whatever they’re called nowadays that I rated was David Dein. I don’t think he has done anything after Arsenal and is someone who would be great to have at their club.
