Rafa Benitez is having a tough time of it at the moment, but we don’t think it’s as bad as is being reported.
We have three good players in this summer in Kenedy, Sung-yueng and Martin Dubravka but with three weeks left in the window, we still don’t know whether this will turn out to be a good window or not.
What is evident is that Mike Ashley is not spending much money although we should be able to get close to £30M if we can sell Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham and Mbemba to Porto.
The Mbemba move has been held up for weeks now, and it’s typical of Newcastle to wait to try to get a little bit more for a player who has no future at the club.
Rafa Benitez – keeping an even keel
Mbemba hasn’t even reported back to Newcastle for training.
Newcastle should have sold him to Porto at least a couple of weeks ago.
With Ashley’s unwillingness to provide Rafa with suitable funds for the fourth transfer window running Rafa’s long-term future at Newcastle doesn’t look good at the moment.
But the manager is keen to make a go of it on Tyneside, and it only takes a couple of decent signings to make this transfer window a good one.
And he wants everybody associated with the club to stick together.
Newcastle fans are still the key to Rafa staying on at Newcastle, and we don’t know what Ashley’s plans are for selling the club.
But with a couple of decent signings in the next three weeks, things could still turn out well this summer.
It’s far too early to go too negative about this transfer window, and Rafa seems to be keeping an even keel about it.
It’s not great but it can still turn out to be a decent window with Rafa’s squad stronger than it was last season.
That’s the hope.
Keep the faith.
