Rafa Benitez has finally come out and said that because he is not being backed in the transfer market then Newcastle will have to ensure they stay up this season – that’s the goal again for a second successive season.
And it all seems like deja vu all over again.
This is what happened last summer when Mike Ashley refused to spend money but this is one year later, and we have been paid £123M by the Premier League.
It’s the fourth window running that Mike Ashley has refused to support the manager with sufficient funding.
If Mike Ashley doesn’t want to back Rafa, then he should leave before we lose the boss and then we’ll be back in the dark ages again.
Rafa Benitez – a frustrated manager currently at Newcastle
Rafa has said the goal this season has to be to stay up because of a lack of investment from the owner :
“Next year the target will be to stay up.”
“The reality is that the Premier League is difficult, and every year the others spend money and bring new players.”
“You don’t know because we finished tenth this past year, we can automatically)be in the middle next season, because everyone else is spending.”
“We have to fix a target to stay up and that is it.”
“Concentrate on staying up and then after that see where.”
“It will be more difficult than last year.”
“Fulham, Wolves are spending….Huddersfield, Brighton…everyone is spending, making it more difficult.”
“Yeah I was hoping for more than a battle against relegation but it is what we have at the moment.:
“Yes, 100% it will be tougher this coming season.”
“Fulham and Wolves have big money and when you talk about the market, you know what offers they are making.”
“They will be stronger at the beginning than Huddersfield and Brighton, but Brighton and Huddersfield are already in the Premier League and they are spending some more money.
“Then you see West Ham, they are spending some money.”
This is all depressing and disappointing, and if Mike Ashley will not support Rafa, he should get out.
He keeps saying he will sell Newcastle but the three times he has done that seem to be nothing but a PR stunt.
It will not help with players coming to the club this summer either, and maybe Rafa is setting the stage to fans that he will leave – if not now then definitely next summer when his contract runs out.
If Rafa leaves the club – and these comments are very worrying – then Mike Ashley will be held 100% accountable and responsible.
Even when he has a world-class manager in place who has done miracles over the past two seasons for the club – Ashley still won’t support him.
That’s why he has to leave Newcastle.
Did I say this is all very disappointing?
