Rafa Looking To Bring In Defenders – Here’s One He’s Interested In At A Decent Price

Newcastle’s Rafa Benitez is trying to get players in cheaply since it seems he has very little money to spend this summer.

There’s a report that Rafa is now interested in getting 25-year-old free agent Mexican center-back Diego Reyes to Newcastle.

The Mexican international defender has seen out his contract at Porto and Sky Sports is reporting that both West Ham and Newcastle are interested in signing the player.

Kieth Downie has also put out this tweet.

Reyes didn’t exactly have a good time of it in his six years at Porto.

He was loaned out to Real Sociedad and Espanyol during that time and managed only 49 games with 3 goals for Porto.

The 6ft 2ins tall defender has played 53 times for Mexico.

He was named in Mexico’s squad for the World Cup in May but had to withdraw because he hadn’t sufficiently recovered from a previous hamstring injury.

Reyes has been described as being excellent in his positioning, comfortable in possession and very strong in the air.

The versatile Mexican can also play in defensive midfield.

The Chronicle are reporting today that while he is a target of Rafa’s he is not a priority at the moment, but if we are to sign him we would need to move quickly.

Rafa must have other center-backs and full-backs on his radar screen.

And finally owner Mike Ashley will no doubt like the price of Reyes.

Comments welcome.

    Repost – missed the bus

lesh, I’m not sure if it’s likely. I was very hopeful until recently but admit I was getting carried away reading some signs which probably weren’t there in hindsight.

I always thought Staveley had a real proposal for the club but that it was dependent on getting the right price. That means in reality some person or persons had given her a pot of cash (say £400M) and said “buy the club, whatever is left over after the purchase you can keep”.

Ashley wanted the price of the club plus his debt repaid, which forced the price up (potentially to £400M), leaving no room for Staveley’s payday. If she wasn’t going to get any commission, then it’s time for her to sit back and wait until such time as she could get better terms. After all, if her backer is still interested, they’re not going anywhere.

If Ashley is indeed paying off some debt, say £50M, with the Sky money, then his asking price for the club comes down by that much and leaves Staveley some potential commission. Her buyer gets the club for the price they want to pay, Ashley gets his margin, Staveley gets her payday and everyone’s happy.

Except for the fact it leaves us with no transfer budget and p!ssed off manager, not to mention the fans who are completely left in the dark. Hopefully the long term gain would be worth the short term pain.

My figures are illustrative, btw – not meant to be accurate

One for Viz top tips, “West Ham fans, save time and effort looking up potential football signing rumours, by simply reading Newcastle’s instead.”

Listening to Neil Warnock on TalkSport this morning waxing lyrical about Josh Murphy. He rates him on a par with Wilfried Zaha who he worked with at Palace and said that his dribbling skills are mesmerising. Zaha wants away from Palace and is being valued around £70mil. Let’s hope we didn’t buy the wrong Murphy.

Well so far a very depressing transfer window, we can’t even get players we don’t want out the door
    Mbemba, Mitro, Ritchie ?
Obviously there is no chance of Colback going anywhere unless we end his contract and pay him up

Nobody will buy us for 300 million , we have an idiot for a chairman who refuses to spend competitively with likes of Brighton , Huddersfield, Fulham, Wolves
Clearly it’s going to be a long season fighting relegation

    How depressing

My repost to your repost @3

Were Stavely or somebody to buy the club as you described, I think Rafa’d be happy to tread water to build up funds to move forward. As long as he sees genuine will to succeed, I think he’d go with whatever needs to be done. Again, our fate is in Ashley’s hands.

And as far as your optimism and hope’s concerned, you’re not alone – such is the desperation for Ashley’s reign to end that we’re all feeling.
