Report – Newcastle Extremely Close To Signing Mbemba Replacement

We have been linked with a number of center-backs lately and one of them is Diego Reyes who is now a free agent after his five-year contract at Porto ran out last month.

There’s a report in Calciomercato today that Newcastle are ‘extremely close’ to signing the former Porto defender.

But we have to remember that some of the false reports about Stefano Sturaro joining Newcastle this summer were also from the same outlet.

25-year-old Mexican center-back Diego Reyes

Here’s a piece from the calciomercato.com report:

“Newcastle United, of the English Premier League, are extremely close to signing former Porto centre-back Diego Reyes.”

“The Mexican defender has previously linked with a move to Lazio, as his contract expired with Portuguese outfit Porto earlier in the summer.”

“Yet it appears as though Rafa Benitez has convinced him to go to England and the Premier League ahead of the 2018/19 season.”

If this is true and there have to be some doubts about the report then Rafa must be extremely short of money.

And this would be the second free agent signing this summer following Sung-yueng’s arrival in early July.

Chancel Mbemba joined Porto yesterday for £5M so there was ample opportunity for Rafa to arrange for the replacement to be the former Porto center-back.

Italian club Lazio had been the favorites to sign the 25-year-old but according to the report above Rafa Benitez has convinced the 25-year-old to move to the Premier League.

He has played 53 times for Mexico with one goal – and the price is right;  he would fight for a place in the team with Lascelles, Lejeune, and Clark.

Over the last two seasons, he’s been on loan at Real Sociedad and Espanyol in Spain and played a total of 63 games so Rafa will have had reports on how well he played.

If this report is true he probably had a couple of good seasons.

Rather take Schar as I think it is more easy to adapt him to the PL. The Mexican however do speak spanish as do Rafa of course. Not a bad replacement for Mbemba, but still not taking us up a level.

This Reyes story has been covered on Sky sports news over the last 2 days. Apparently his agents are flying into the UK today to discuss a move, unfortunately it was unclear where the agents were heading, us or West Ham.
