Rafa Benitez A Big Fan Of Newcastle’s New Number 5

Newcastle have made an excellent signing in getting 26-year-old Fabian Schar to Newcastle for a fee of only £3M from Spanish club Deportivo.

And in a post from Rafa on his own website – as reported in the Shields Gazette – he has talked about when he was first impressed with the center-back.

That was when Chelsea played FC Basel in the semi-final of the Europa League back in 2013.

Rafa was the caretaker manager of Chelsea and that didn’t stop him from winning the Europa League title that year.

Schar played really well against Chelsea and got Rafa’s attention in those two games five years ago.

Fabian Schar and Rafa Benitez having a laugh yesterday

Schar has taken the number 5 shirt and has signed a three-year deal and will definitely challenge for a first team starting position at Newcastle.

He also likes to play with the ball at his feet which he has said is one of his strengths.

This is what Rafa Benitez wrote today about our new center-back:

“I know about him since my time in Chelsea, when we won the UEFA Europa League in 2013, in a match against Basel.”

“On those days, we noticed his ability to play with the ball from behind.”

“Now he is part of NUFC and we wish he can adapt to the Premier League quickly.”

“Schar has a lot of experience in Germany and Spain so he will improve the competition in our defence for sure.”

Central defense was one of our strengths last season but with Florian Lejeune having injured his knee this signing is a timely one.

Fabian is also a replacement for Chancel Mbemba who joined Porto earlier this week.

Now we will have Lascelles, Lejeune, Clark, and Schar fighting it out for the two central defensive positions and Rafa can also play three at the back when required.

Comments welcome.

    Great signing! Finally.

Who would have thought that a NUFC’s strength would be it’s defense!? lol but last season it certainly was and this season we seem to be stronger in that department.

I would really like to se a LB and RB that could really challenge Yedlin and Dummett though. Rafa should never have sold Mbabu imho. Would have loved him to be playing for us still, especially since he can play in both flanks- exactly what we need.

I want us to get that LB kid from Bristol we’ve been linked with he looks like a good player.

This is what a “Rafa signing” is all about. A player with potential and a good base of experience who is at the right age, wants to improve and is no prima donna. Someone who wants to be improved by a great coach and in a great league and at a great club.

I seriously wonder whether Rafa himself would get as much satisfaction from buying a team of finished articles for £50m each and focusing only on team tactics (a bit like Mourihno does) vs having the opportunity to see significant improvement in individuals as well. I really think he enjoys the individual development side and that is part of why he is here. That’s why I am so puzzled with the Armstrong outcome.

    Regarding Mr SCHÄR

This issue is of the utmost importance. In fact, I request Ed write an article to spread this vital message.

Fabian Schär’s surname is pronounced “Share” as in “share the crisps, FCB”. This is due to the “ä” letter, which is often represented in English as “ae” (this is observed when, for example, Özil is sometimes spelt Oezil and Müller is sometimes spelt Müller).

As a pedantic obsessive compulsive person with an interest in linguistics, I want to hear NOBODY pronouncing his name “shaaar”.

But most importantly, if we use the correct pronounciation, we can make use of the chant we reserve for our favourite centre backs: to the tune of “Rupert the Bear”,

    Fabiaaaaaan
    Fabian Schär
    Everyone knows his name
    Cause he’s Fabiaaaaan
    Fabian Schär
    Everyone knows his name

If Muto signs today/tomorrow etc, this will be a good start to this week. Yes, it’s not two players that came to anyone’s mind a few weeks back but Rafa most of the time can get the best out of players and make them solid. Some have mentioned that signing a player for big money does not guarantee anything as they don’t adapt to the pace of the premiership, this is why I like Muto, he has pace and can run with the ball and is a type of striker that looks for where the ball may be and not where it was. Honestly, I feel this is an upgrade on some of the strikers we have.
Still need that playmaker number 10 and L/B, let’s hope Rafa has that covered and thank god he is at the club still as most managers would have said screw this I’m done, not Rafa, he is working to get some sort of upgrade on last years squad and that I feel is for the fans and only the fans, his hands have been tied but he will still figure something out for the toon and not for PINKY & THE BRAIN.

There was always that issue with Mbemba’s communication due to a lack of understanding with the English language. I think that was also a big reason he has been let go. Schar speaks great English judging off of his interview, shouldn’t be a problem for benitez to help him understand his tactics.

So our current best team…? (assuming we sign Muto)

    _____________Dubravka
    Yedlin_Lascelles_Lejuene_Dummett
    _________Shelvey_Diame
    Ritchie______Perez_______Kenedy
    _____________Muto

    Subs:
    Schar
    Ki
    Joselu
    Gayle
    Atsu
    Darlow
    Fernández (imo)

Doing this team I’ve realised that the only back up right back/left back is Manquillo. We really need to sign Bryan as cover for LB.

Since we lost haidara and Gamez. What’s happening with Lazaar?

Hard to get excited about any signings until Rafa signs a new deal and considering he wants the club to do things right, if these signings are anything to go by it’s not looking likely. From what Rafa is saying his main targets passed us by awhile ago. Yet he will still be judged on them, the first sign of a sticky patch you will have Munster, catchy and Jesper berating him for his poor signings, Twitter will have it’s kimbo’s too, he must be asking himself is it worth sticking this out.

If we get Bryan for less than £10m I would say this has been a successful window!
Really like Muto – someone mentioned Schär Lejeune Ki and Shelvey’s balls over the top to Muto Perez and Kenedy (and possibly Townsend if hibbit is to be beliveved!)
It seems we now have two no nonsense centre halves (Lascelles and Clark) and two ball-players (Lejeune and Schär) – a nice balance.
Somehow I am looking forward to watching us play??????????????????

I wonder if this might be preparation for moving to 3 CB – 2 ball-playing defenders, Schaar and Lejeune, either side of Lascelles – with Yedlin and Ritchie as WBs, meaning Kennedy may have a free(ish) role further up the pitch…

What I want to know is when the govt are going to Investigate the possibilities of bringing down the Unfair competition that is the Premiur League.

The filthy rich clubs with all the money have created a Cartel … it’s not a level playing field anymore..they even hoover up all the upcoming talent around Europe then loan them out to clubs that won’t harm their status or position in the Cartel that is the top five in this country.

It’s unfair competition and they just feed off the rest of the clubs. When I see Man City and the like humiliating other clubs 5-0 every other week it’s just not Right.

    Money dictates and it’s unfair.

Not a level playing field .

Carr’s scouting reports on riviere said “he has neither the nous or ability to hitthe ground running. A more senior marksman is needed to score the goals”. He then urged a move for lacazette whi was available for 15 million. The club baulked at the valuation and bought riviere instead. Same with luke shaw. Just over 10 million we were quoted when he broke into the Southampton first team. The club predictably baulked again and bought haidara. As they both represented better value for money.

    Looking forward to muto signing.

He can use both feet although he is right footed. He can take on players, he’s skillful and has good composure.

If he can adapt fast he could be a bit special.

Just my thought. I wonder if he’s being brought in to challenge Perez?

If Gayle goes and rondon comes in obviously not. Just a thought
