Fabian Schar is a ball-playing center-back, and Rafa Benitez was keen to sign him up for a bargain £3M after his club Deportivo were relegated in May.
Schar is the second player to join Newcastle after playing in the World Cup in Russia this summer.
He played three of the four games for Switzerland, and he joins Ki Sung-yueng – who was the captain of South Korea – and reported back this week for training at Newcastle.
Fabian did get some interest from clubs before the World Cup, but it seems like an excellent decision to join Newcastle.

Once Newcastle went in for him he was very keen to join such a big club and play for the renowned Rafa Benitez.
It’s obvious from the first interview that Rafa has already talked to him a lot about his game.
This is what Schar has said when asked if he joined Newcastle because of Rafa Benitez:
“It was one of the main reasons.”
“I had a really good feeling with him and I know what he is expecting from me.”
“When you hear about the club Newcastle it’s all brilliant, so I’m happy to join.”
“I am looking at the Premier League and the games and I like the English league.”
“I am really looking forward to seeing the fans and the stadium.”
“I am looking forward to starting to train with the team.”
“I have played at St James’ Park before in the Olympics and it was brilliant so to know it’s the home stadium is brilliant.”
“The fans are crazy here so I really look forward to playing in front of them.”
“The first one I played (World Cup games) was in Brazil and the last one in Russia so it’s always special when you play for your national team.”
“It was a great experience.”
“Now I’m looking forward to this experience with Newcastle and hopefully we can do really good things.”
“The club is a really big club for me. It has a big name, and it is a brilliant chance for me.”
“I’m not like a typical defender.” “I, of course, defend, but I’m quite good with the ball – I like to play,”
“I want to build up the game from behind, and I think that is a strength of mine. “
“I have also scored some headers – that could also be a strength and hopefully I can use it here.”
“I hope to start training with the team soon, and I’m looking forward to everything that’s coming.”
“At the moment, I just want to get started.”
We are upbeat about Newcastle signing Schar with Mainz striker Muto reported ready to sign for Newcastle – maybe today.
The club have also sold goalkeeper Matz Sels to Strasbourg for £4M yesterday.
If we can get three or four additional players in over the next couple of weeks, it will have been a decent transfer window – made difficult once again by our stubborn owner Mike Ashley.
