Newcastle’s Proposed Deal To Sign Another Striker Is Progressing – But Slowly

The Mail are reporting today that Rafa Benitez now wants West Brom striker Salomon Rondon as Newcastle’s next signing,

Newcastle have signed center-back Fabian Schar from Deportivo for £3M and have a deal for striker Yoshinori Muto ready to be completed for £9.5M – once he gets his work permit.

Aleksandar Mitrovic will leave Newcastle imminently for an initial £22M payment to Fulham and Rafa is now keen to add more players to the squad to add some competition.

Salomon Rondon – coming on loan to Newcastle?

Newcastle are trying to get a straight swap deal between Salomon Rondon and Dwight Gayle.

As part of the deal, Rondon will sign a one-year extension to his contract so he will not become a free agent next summer and West Brom can still get a transfer fee for him.

This proposed deal suggests Rafa has little to no money to spend in this summer’s transfer window and that has to be a problem for the Newcastle manager.

Both loans will include an option to buy next summer.

And since Dwight Gayle did not get a run-out against Porto in the 0-0 draw last night, we assume this deal is getting close.

We hope it’s getting close but we’d prefer Rondon to come in and Dwight Gayle to stay at Newcastle for next season.

But it’s one striker out and one in for Newcastle, so we still need to sign another striker before August 9th.

Comments welcome.

Rafa seems to be having a good look at
Sterry , Roberts , Armstrong ,and Longstaff

I doubt Lascelles is going anywhere he was
the only player not to be subbed.

Whichever stiker is brought in he needs to be able to play with his back to goal as well.

Rafa is building his counter attacking style but as last night showed when we are forced to play spells with our backs against the wall we need someone who can compete for and hold a ball up until we get back on attack.Otherwise we are back under the cosh.

Pace is usually king but not in all circumstances.

Rondon i feel would be a backwards move, would rather have Wellbeck if available.

I wouldnt complain if some Mitro money was used to bring Loftus Cheek in.

So are we going to waste all the Mitro money on this fantastic specimen?

What do you reckon Jail…is that all you can hope to get for £20M or are they just baying players behind Rafa’s back?

At the end of the day it’s always better to buy someone than no one…we can always try and lose money on him down the road (if we can ship him 😉 )

Jib from what I saw in Dublin Roberts and longstaff definitely have something to offer. If we don’t have any money (why??) and have to swap gayle for rondon then we might aswell keep arma. I have a feeling /hope that the money saved on rondon will allow us to strengthen at full back or back up to shelvey or right hand side

I hope the swap is happening to allow money to be spent on AMC and LB. I could imagine we will make a bid for Diego Reyes

Can’t make up my mind on Rondon. The times I have seen him play, he and Rodrigues(?) stood out but not dazzling superfantastic. I think I’ll just trust that Rafa knows way better than me what is available and doable.

Last night just when I was thinking Dubs looked rusty……..worldies galore. So yeah, trust the Gaffa.

Magscar I think rondon will give us that. He is a good compromise between gayle and Joselu although in reality I’d prefer both were gone and upgraded.

So let me get this right, we refused to sign mitro for less than £22m. That means we rate him as a 20 million plus striker. We have bid less for other strikers and refused to go higher so are in effect saying those players are worse than mitrovic yet we sold him?
Why we are at it we might as well have a clean sweep and let Josepoo leave as well

Id take rondon hes a beast, id like to keep gayle though i think he will have a good season if he was more confident last season he would of had 20+ goals, to me at least, he just looked to be short of it.

But rondon, muto, perez, horsepoo doesnt look much improved if not a down grade on mitro, gayle, perez, horsepoo

    You would have to speculate:
Rondon 1st choice lead st with horse poo back up
Then perez behind with muto back up (in this case possibly either way around)

After initially being opposed to a deal which would take Gayle to West Brom in return for Rondon, Newcastle look to have come around to the idea. The main reason for that is surely the signing of Japan international Yoshinori Muto, who will act as a replacement for Gayle should he leave. In terms of the deal itself, it was always going to be a tough one to negotiate, with loan swap deals rarely ever seen in the Premier League. Nixon does not state from which side the disagreement is coming from, but you would assume it’s Gayle, who would likely have to take a pay cut to join the Baggies in the Championship. Newcastle may have to end up helping out with Gayle’s wages, something which they would surely be happy to do if it secured them Rondon on loan. Conversely, they are about to rake in around £20million from the sale of Aleksandar Mitrovic, and they could turn around and splash out the £16million required to take Rondon on a permanent deal.

Haven’t watched enough of him to be sure but he does seem to fit both but just would like more (I know don’t we all).

Just being an upgrade on Joselu isn’t enough if we haven’t got a true no 10 either. The best of that type of striker doesn’t come cheap though and unless we are going to break our transfer record it is going to be much different than Rondon.

LeJeune absence will need to be covered but as someone posted earlier may be that could be a loan. Dummet can cover at a pinch but we aren’t well off for LB’s anyway. Can’t think of anyone coming through either.

Not sure if any of the youngsters we have seen will be kept in squad ( had to take them on pre-season given shortage of numbers with injuries and potential transfers in and out) but some good performances at times and 1 or 2 will have caught Rafa’s eye for future.

On a positive note given who has been coached by thus far and the tactics adopted then may be Rafa is seeing someone he could polishinto a much more effective player

How anyone can believe Nufc is run well as a club or a business is beyond me.

The club doesn’t have a pot to piss in, the facilities are in 5hit state. The manager is beg steal and borrowing to try and get a squad together.

Ashley only has SDs best interests at heart, the club is rudderless and adrift and going to sink very soon if he keeps up his current course.

    Jesper,
Our transfer business has been a shambles for a long time now. It looked liked it had changed when Rafa was given free reign to get us promoted yet has reverted back to normal after his mission was achieved, in fact just before it was achieved. Hence he won’t be around much longer to be a part of it.

from last night it was evident we need a lb …joe bryan would also allow dummett to be cover at cb at about £6m
we need a cf …more so since mitro going ….rondon would fit bill alongside muto …but with mitro money we should also be able to get tammy from chelski for about £15m esp. if gayle goes ..sorted get going penfold

When will we show some ambition and sign Batshuayi for £35m?

    – the number 9 who will get the fans excited and will score 15-20 easily in the prem (100 minutes per goal last season!)
    – has the sell on value that Ashley craves
    – gives him the chance to be the main man
    – will make a huge difference to the team

Jazzyp…who will take him on his PL wages…

That’s issue with strategy “better to buy someone than no one regardless”!

And yes we most certain see a pattern with transfers…the same issue as always! Ashley wants to make a potential profit on each new player but he just rarely does unless he buys real talent!

When your strategy in the transfer market is to gamble with a cheaper option every time then you’re eventually going to reap the rewards.

The club constantly gambles and buys several players hoping for the best. Now and again they find a PURPLE and sell them on for what looks like a great profit. Unfortunately the other players they bought aren’t fit for purpose and are over paid.

So any money gained from the sale of the PURPLE is now being used to pay the wages of the other gambles who haven’t cut it.

Basically for every Cabaye and Ba there’s a Colback Xisco Best etc etc etc, players no where near the first team sucking money out of the club.

It doesn’t work and the last 11 years show it.
The club’s penniless with very few real assets on the pitch either.

The club’s debt has doubled blah blah.

It’s laughable that anyone thinks the club’s run well or in decent shape.
