Experienced Central Midfielder Available – Newcastle Linked With The 28-Year-Old

TEAMtalk are reporting today in an exclusive that Newcastle may have an interest in signing Danny Drinkwater, who moved to Chelsea from Leicester City last summer for a massive £35M on a five-year deal.

But he played only 22 times for Chelsea last season and seems to have no place in the future plans of new manager Maurizio Sarri

His former club Leicester City seem to be the favorites to sign Drinkwater maybe on loan for the season but – not surprisingly – they are unwilling to pay anywhere near £35M to get him back.

The Foxes are said to be willing to pay £20M for him on what could be a season loan with an option to buy next summer.

Danny Drinkwater – Newcastle interested?

Like some players who move to Chelsea, they don’t get the playing time they need and often want to move on fairly quickly.

The TEAMtalk article says that Newcastle are interested in the player, but even at £20M, there seems no way that Newcastle would be willing to pay that for the 28-year-old.

Especially when we brought in central midfielder Ki Sung-yueng as a free agent this summer.

Maybe a loan deal for the season – but that would be it.

Drinkwater is a good player, but we would be surprised if he arrives at Newcastle this summer.

With the money Newcastle get for Aleksandar Mitrovic (£22M) Rafa will be bringing in at least one new striker – and it looks like it will be Salomon Rondon of West Brom.

And we may have to bring in another center-back to cover for the injured Florian Lejeune – who is likely to miss most of the season with his severe ACL knee injury.

What do you think?

    Off thread but…

Rebecca (and whatever other names you post by)

You continue to focus your clean-up campaign on Jail, despite my suggestion that you demonstrate even-handedness by calling for others to moderate their foul and inappropriate language when posting.

I may have missed it but haven’t seen you calling for others to clean their acts up. Do we infer that the foul and abusive language often used by Jib (and his other egos) and a few others is acceptable?

Or do you have a conflict of interest?

Some pundits think that we should buy Drinkwater – a midfielder when we need a Centre back to cover for Lejeune. Must be students in the press room while the hacks are on holiday.

Now the talk is of Gayle plus £3m to buy Rondon and not a loan swap. So that values Gayle at £13m if Rondon is valued at £16m. None of this seems to add up.

Even at 20 mil this is a way out of our price bracket
We obviously get every penny generated but thats not a great deal of money and agency fees and wages are part of that budget so realistically a 20m transfer like this with wages and fees will be 30+ mil or in other words no chance ever under mikey boy

Drinkwater would be great if he was 100% fit and motivated him and Shelvey together pinging balls over the top for Muto , Rondon and Kennedy to run onto would be gravy!

Problem is Chelsea paid 35 million and he gets 120k a week does he not? Not a chance in hell we are buying him as we can’t get a loan of him

Hope we don’t spend all our money on Rondon and a CB. I much prefer we apend it on Rondon and the Bristol LB Joe Bryan and get a CB for cover on loan.

Sports Direct have invested £140m in property deals.
Anyone worked out where NUFC’s SkyTV / Premier League earnings and other revenues have been invested ?

Wonder if we will see Kennedy and Yedlin as attacking wingbacks this season at all? Just with license to fly forward knowing they have plenty of cover behind them then have Rondon and Muto up top with Shelvey , Diame and Ki in the middle in some games

“Maybe a loan deal for the season – but that would be it.”

Can’t we only do a single loan from a Premier League club in a season according to PL rules? Kenedy is it for Chelsea this year, so this would have to be a non-starter. Drinkwater is a solid player, but wouldn’t be a good use of our funds unless we are losing someone major from our MF that we don’t know about.

Very interesting take on how Fulham go about buying players and at least they seem to have a plan

This has probably already been clarified some other time but don’t we still have money owed to us from spurs reslulting in the Sissoko 30 mil transfer.

Wasn’t their deal to be paid in a series of 6 mil instalments. If so that money should also be available for Rafa to invest?

2 domestic loans allowed. Only 1 per club.

The only way drink water would be joining us is if Chelsea took a massive bath on him and sold him for about 10 million, his wages would be halved too.

I’d prefer Loftus cheek as our number ten if we do have enough to but him.

I would like another centre midfielder if Hayden is away.

In my opinion the positions to make signings should be in this order

    Top striker/number 10.
Centre back cover – I’d go for Dawson as he can cover cb and rb.
Left back competition – Bryan please

    Nice to have’s:

    Hayden replacement
Sell darlow get a better 2nd choice keeper

I was under the same impression, only one loan from the one club.

No chance on this one and probably for the best.

Rondon for Gayle is a ridiculous transfer, I can’t see any benefit to it. Is Rondon a better finisher? The stats point to no.

Joselu, Rondon & Muto, I hope I’m wrong but it doesn’t quite scream excitement!

According to yesterday’s sun he’s on 170 grand a week. Not bad at all eh ? He’s basically had one good season in his whole career.

We simply couldn’t have gone in to the new season with only adding Muto, why we can’t afford to have all four no one knows.

I agree about Rondon what the hell does Rafa see in him ? A target man ?
I can certainly understand not wasting money, even trying to keep club in the black, but if thats the case whty waste ANYTHING on Rondon ? He’s certainly proved he’s not worth the money being asked in his displays for WBA

I’m sure Rafa would be the first to admit (if he chose to) that Rondon is not near the top of his targets for a goal scorer but it’s probably the best he’s “allowed” to buy under the present owner!
