Martin Dubravka played his first minutes of the preseason on Saturday night since he signed on at Newcastle permanently this summer.
And the Slovakian International looked what he seemed last season while on loan at Newcastle – a top-class goalkeeper – who will only improve under the guidance of Rafa Benitez.
Both Dubravka and Kenedy are with us for the coming season with Martin signing permanently for only £4M and Kenedy on loan.
The local press are reporting there is no option to buy Kenedy in his loan contract which – if accurate – is disappointing
Dubravka made some world-class saves in the second half at Porto to keep the clean sheet before he was replaced by Karl Darlow on 72 minutes and Karl also made a couple of great saves.
Martin Dubravka – in training
Dubravka met former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas – his idol – and he got his shirt.
That was with the help of Joselu – who played with Casillas at Real Madrid.
This is what Martin Dubravka has said as reported in the Chronicle today:
“I was a little bit shocked to see him standing in front of me.”
“I got his picture so for me it was a special night.”
“I was really happy that I was able to speak with him and he gave me his jersey. I asked Joselu because he used to play with him at Real Madrid so he arranged it for me.”
“I’m really happy about that. I’ll have to invite him to dinner to say thank you.”
“I will be getting it framed and put it in my house.”
The positive coming out of the game at Porto was Newcastle’s defensive qualities.
But we must get more players through the door so we can be a real threat up front – which we weren’t on Saturday night in Porto.
Martin Dubravka could well be one of Newcastle’s top signings if he keeps playing like he did last season for us.
He is a first class professional and we are so pleased to have him at Newcastle.
