Newcastle’s Lack Of Depth Apparent In 4-0 Hammering At SC Braga

Newcastle were easily beaten by SC Braga 4-0 tonight in our fourth friendly of the season and our first defeat.

It was a hot night in Portugal with the temperature a high 30 degrees centigrade – about 86 degrees Fahrenheit at the end of the game.

This was the end of the six-day training camp in Portugal and after the defense played well on Saturday night to get a 0-0 draw against Porto, SC Braga were just too good for Newcastle in the second half tonight.

Both Shelvey and Kenedy were not involved at all, and we looked fairly ordinary.

But we held our own in the first half and created a few chances, but we were nowhere to be seen in the second half – which is a little unusual for a Rafa Benitez side.

Action between SC Braga and Newcastle tonight

But it’s only a friendy in the preseason, and we are told the results don’t matter (but only when we lose!) and what the players need to do is learn from this game and get match fit.

And what Rafa is worried about with the squad is there’s a lack of depth and now we have almost exactly eight full days as of now – to strengthen the squad in this transfer window.

Mike Ashley cannot take any risks or gamble to save some money – because as Rafa has said – another relegation for Newcastle and we could be in really big trouble.

It was 0-0 at the half, but then in the second half, it was all Braga who ran away with the game with four goals.

Newcastle started the following side with the substitutions shown – so a few of our players did play the whole game.

Newcastle: Dubravka (Darlow 62); Yedlin (Joselu, 70), Lascelles (Schar, 46), Clark, Dummett; Diame, Hayden (Ki, 62); Ritchie (Roberts, 80), Perez (Longstaff, 80), Atsu (Murphy, 62); Gayle.
Subs not used: Elliot, Manquillo, Sterry, Yarney, Fernandez, Armstrong.

Only Roberts and Longstaff of the youngsters saw some playing time, and that was only in the final 10 minutes.

Dwight Gayle played the whole game, so maybe he is staying at Newcastle for next season?

Clark, Dummett, and Diame also played the full game with Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez getting a good 80 minutes under their belt.

Fabian Schar was the only change at the half, and he got a decent 45 minutes.

But this defeat shows Newcastle do not have the necessary strength in depth.

It will further help Rafa’s claims that we need four more players brought in by next Thursday at 5:00pm and Mike Ashley should not be gambling on Newcastle’s future by trying to save a few bucks.

Like he’s done in the past.

We need those players Rafa wants brought in and signed – and quickly too.

Rafa wants a center-back, left-back, an attacking midfielder, and another striker signed.

And none of this last minute stuff this time around – there has been plenty of time to get the players through the door this summer.

And finally, we see that West Ham have agreed to sign Lille’s 21-year-old Brazilian midfielders Thiago Maia for £20M – another player we couldn’t afford.

Somebody needs to ask Mike Ashley where has all the money gone – with Newcastle making a £25M profit so far this summer.

We are being outspent by almost every Premier League club and some Championship clubs too.

Comments welcome.

Me: “Rafa, are you close to any new signings?”
Rafa Benitez: “I have no idea.”

All of his words are damning. He’s not even attempting to veil it, or toe the line anymore.

    Centre back
Go for Ben Gibson and offer Darlow in return plus cash

    Left back
    Target Luke Shaw on loan

    Number 10
We have no money clearly….Get Foden from City and tell Pep he will play, the lad is going to be an England regular

Shocking Mike Ashley, if true. His mother needs to take him aside and have a word.

What makes you think he’s got one ?

He sold his mother to generate the deposit on his first store, or so the story goes.

At least Keith Downie is reporting the reality of the situation through Sky as opposed to the usual PR managed press release. We need this truth more widely accepted and covered within the media. Talksport show today on Rafa offered to Spain was a great platform for fans to get the reality out there nationally and come across with well articulated views.

#nufc players opted against doing any post-game interviews tonight. Rafa stated: “As I say things aren’t going well off the pitch and you can see a reflection.” The players said it was “nothing personal” to journalists. #nufc

    Nicky,
You and the bitch of Buchenwald want to have a word with yourselves after denying that there was a footin crisis going on. It’s a shambles and it’s a hell of a lot deeper than that free advertising you keep harping on about!

Rafa was our only hope, I think with his comments that has gone now. What can fatty do if Rafa just goes through the motions this season? How I hate the fat man!

He’ll wait till the end of the window, and probably stay to see out his contract no matter what. Honourable, decent man. He’ll feel sick, if it comes to abandoning us to Mike Ashley, but he may have to.

Some one please tell me who is going to get us goals during open play? In the final third we are a very poor team and lack any genuine quality.
This will be are downfall during the coming season unless cashley opens his wallet and let Rafa buy some attacking quality which costs a little more than we sold Mitro for!

Jail, I have never denied anything. I just try to take plausible alternative positions where I can, for the sake of interest, argument, and to maintain a glimmer of hope. I’ll stop doing it now. We are at a critical moment.

Friend saw Ashley in London one hour ago. Spoke to him:

“Mike, are you going to give Rafa some money?”

    “No.”

    “Why not?”

    “No.”

    “Definitely not?”

    “No.”

    “Nothing at all?”

    “No.”

Dismissive, daft grin on his face, no eye contact, looking away

I wasn’t especially concerned by the result of a preseason game. But I am extremely concerned by Rafa’s comments. He’s not holding back much now… Next ten days massive.

Sort your shit out mate, you’re either deliberately leaving inflamatory comments to wind folk up or you think we’re in the clarts if left with Ashley, you can’t have it both ways.

Shut up will you FFS. We are all just reading the tea leaves and guessing and hoping as best we can. Views change as circumstances do. Grow up. I’ve always known Ashley is capable of being a thoroughgoing kernt. Doesn’t mean he has to be. Even now he can stump up.

as fans you have to look at yourselves in this too. you roll up every match day and say, i’m turning up for Rafa, i’m turning up for the players, this is my club.
Talk about boycotting this and that, but what you mean is you want others to boycott but your not going to miss out on turning up match day to see who didn’t turn up, you don’t want to miss out on those cheap trainers from sports direct, your still going to buy this seasons shirt because you support the team.
Ashley is doing what’s best for him and his share holders, and it is never going to change.
it’s YOU who has to change your habits.
