Rafa Reduced To Getting Cheap Players Newcastle Can Afford – Bids €6M For New Striker

Rafa Benitez has said many times before that a good striker will cost Newcastle at least £20M.

But it looks like he will not be getting a striker of that value this summer because the club’s hierarchy are keeping a tight control on the purse strings as usual.

After last night’s 4-0 defeat at SC Braga when Rafa seemed to be worried about the team and what;s going on behind the scenes the news today from Belgium is that we have had a €6M (£5.3M) bid for Anderlecht striker Isaac Kiese Thelin accepted.

The player is available for sale because Anderlecht don’t want to keep him at the club.

26-year-old Anderlecht striker Isaac Kiese Thelin

The 6ft 2ins tall 26-year-old Swedish International striker joined Anderlecht on loan in January of last year and he was transferred from Bordeaux and loaned out to Waasland-Beveren in the Belgian Pro League last summer.

In 36 games he scored 19 goals and had 5 assists for them.

Lokomotiv Moscow are also keen on the striker, and the Belgium report says that there is a ‘good chance’ he will go to Russia.

Isaac Kiese Thelin was in the Swedish 23 man squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer.

It seems that Rafa is reduced to buying cheap players he can afford – rather than the players he wants.

It looks very much like last summer and Rafa cannot be a happy camper at the moment.

Neither are the Newcastle fans.

Comments welcome.

    Jib,
So anyone who doesn’t buy in to your theory that he deliberately set out to lose is a dope. Does that make anyone who doesn’t agree Switzerland are no better than Preston or Millwall or that SBR only bought ready made stars a dope too?
It must be out of the question that he was giving our new CB a run out or that Shelvey might have a slight knock.
Your arrogance is only matched by your stupidity.

Ashley has basically said to Rafa, sign this contract on my terms or I’m going to screw your summer up. There can’t ever have been a bigger cutting your nose off scenario seen in the world of football. Why not just sack him.

We’ll look back at last night as a massive moment in deciding the future path of NUFC.
Irrespective of whether Rafa chose a weak team or not, there were plenty players on the pitch who should have performed better and did not. Players who would be first team choices. A few injuries and suspensions and that was near the team we would put out in the EPL. For those who did not see it, Porto would have also given us a thrashing but for our keeper and that was a team with Shelvey etc.

So the problems are clear – we lack quality and coverage in many positions. Rafa not happy. Team not happy. Fans happy? Over to Charnley etc to do something about it before the seasons starts. Don’t hold your breath.

Ashley is once again going back on his word.
Only this time its seriously weakening what was already a weak squad
Maybe he likes the idea of relegation and the promotion that follows.

Hang on, we’re in the black on transfers – or should be if Ashley wasn’t so determined to sell players on easy terms. Mitro out at £22m and Rafa’s having to scratch about for players other clubs want rid of at any price?

Ashley, through Barnes (forget Charnley – he’s the admin boy), seems to be doing his level best to relegate us again. Or, it may be he’s unaware of what Barnes is doing? Either way, Ashley’s responsible for yet another balls up

MA and his personal gimp Penfold have realised that if you buy a player on the cheap from outside the Premiership and they have say a handful of good games – say 5 – then there is an attitude in the rest of football of ‘Oh, they played in the premiership and did alright, they must be worth a few quid’ – so MA buys this fella for £6 million and the next thing we know he’s selling him next summer for £12 million. He’s essentially playing a football stock market and risking our Premiership status as a result and his investment.

Sorry for the late reply but this plastic part time fan has to work to be able to pay and be able to go up as and when I can afford it.
You see I don’t have the luxury of coming from the city so unfortunately in some eyes that makes my family just wannabes and who am I judge on a morale ground your good self who thinks he’s higher up the food chain simply because you own an ST…Congratulations.
As I’ve said to many before I would be happy to meet up for a friendly pint to see why you came to such a judgemental view of what I clearly didn’t say and why you chose to lie and belittle to win a debate.
Won’t be back on till tonight but gladly carry our little debate ,Or as I say meet up for a pint or 2….Your choice and have a good day

Grounding day, cheap poor signings, cashleys makes another profitable transfer window and left spitting feathers trying to squeeze out every last drop of our relegation threatened squad.
Only way to get at Ashley is in the pocket as he’s motivated by making as much money as he can for little investment.
A couple of empty grounds on match day especially live games would make a massive statement. Unfortunately our fan base is far too loyal and proud to let the team down which Ashley knows all too well.

    Jib is trying to deflect.

By implying that all the fans are only kicking off because of a pre season friendly, he then makes out the fans are clueless or fickle, then people will start arguing with him instead of discussing what’s going on.

It’s easier for him to come out with a none argument or call the fans names because non of his argument holds any water.

If Hayden’s got Ni time for Ashley then that’ll be the talk that’ll get to other players outside the club. Great stuff eh, a club that’s seen as lacking ambition and a prime candidate for relegation.?

I wish you’d just say what you really think…lol !!

Seriously though this has now all got so toxic I can’t see any end in sight. If someone offered him 400M, he’d say 450M. We’re trappped and the only way out is possibly doing a Sunderland where his tat shop doesn’t get the exposure he wants at the higher level. I’d almost take that now.

All the Tv money and the sales and the 52000 every week – where the hell has it all gone and why put down an MP when she’s trying to find out exactly that.

Rafa needs to get out of this hell, none of which is his making. Ashley is almost making it personal and Rafa is the polar opposite of Ashley as a human being.

Surely we’re better off doing loan deals for that very promising Brazilian guy rather than wasting another 6M on a Joselu / Riviere type like this Swedish chap.

If we’re going in for this player, it means the Rondon deal is off and also that we’re keeping Gayle who we know if not up to PL standard.

Wonder how our proposed record breaking transfer target Jorgensen is feeling just now.

If Thelin goes to Russia then what does Rafa do ?

Is this fiasco down to Charnley who managed to get Dubravka, Ki, Schnar and Muto in or are we missing something ?

Could someone not leak the target list – I’d like a peek at that !

I think the team virtually picked itself

    Shevey- thigh strain

    Kenedy – leave allowed

    Lejeune – injured

    Muto – needs work permit

That is over a third of likely regular starters and the new boys are being introduced gradually not all at once.

Coupled with that I think Porto took a lot out of the players and last night temperatures were still high when match kicked off with unforced arrors beginning to creep in after a reasonable start – Lascelles putting a simple back pass beyond Dubravka for a corner.

Of those talked about as being for sale – Ritchie ran his socks off but Gayle looked rusty? disinterested? not match ready for conditions? If Gayle not going he has to be man managed now and there were previous problems with injuries that Gayle seemed to feel but Rafa less convinced? Also when does continually wanting 4 players in begin to get into some players heads that this may be strengthening squad but wait given numbers where is this heading for me personally – that will have to be addressed

Brafa are a good side well on in their preparations and were up fot it in 2cnd half whilst we wilted and subs just weakened/disrupted us further.

Rafa may not have wanted the result and I saw little in his selection that we have’t seen so far in pre-season anyway. He was clearly unhappy and possibly turned that to a positive using SKY to beam out his disenchantment and confusion – having now seen the interview and not just read transcripts.

With our best players back we will be a better side but we have an extemely tough start and we all know what being in the relegation zone with few points after say 8-10 games can mean – another tough relegation fight with no guarantees even with Winter window spending to try to retreive situation.

On reflection this could be Rafa reluctantly looking to turn negatives into postive, sieze on fan unrest at home and galvanise Ashley into doing something about his contract impasse. If funds and the size of the pot are at the centre of it all then after 10 days that becomes history and Rafa has to fight on with whatever he has ended with and the contract isn’t a bagaining card until winter when it might be too late.

He doesn’t really have many cards left to play in next week or so and may realise that events involving fans is begining to grow into action even before he goes – that may be akin to a wild beast unleashed over which he and no one else has any control and which could end in an irretrievable situation for all.

What will be will be but battle lines continue to be drawn even if troops are yet mobilised

What has last nights result got to do with Ashley? The players out there were pretty much the same ones we were using last year. the reason we lost is because the manager has lost the dressing room. they dont want to play for a man who is not committed to the club and openly says that the squad i.e. the players on the pitch last night, are not good enough. you want to blame someone for poor results, blame Rafa. If it were Pardew or Carver that is where the bile would be spouted.
