Fans were hoping that Rafa Benitez would get some money to spend this summer, have a good transfer window and then sign a new long-term contract to stay at Newcastle United maybe five years or even ten years.
But none of that has happened and we suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised as owner Mike Ashley has again decided not to spend Newcastle’s money in yet another transfer window.
You have to remember that we got £123M from the Premier League and so the excuse he had last summer as a newly promoted side with little money to spend – doesn’t make sense anymore.
Rafa Benitez – after beating Chelsea 3-0 and finishing 10th in Premier League
And not only that but two of the clubs promoted from the Championship this summer – Wolves and Fulham – have ambitious owners and both clubs are easily outspending Newcastle.
We had all hoped that Ashley would sell up last year when Amanda Staveley was interested.
But we wonder when Ashley puts the club up for sale – he’s done that three times – is he really trying to sell the club or is it simply a PR stunt?
It seems like it’s the latter.
So where are we now?
Almost back in the dark ages because unless Ashley sells the club we have given up all hope that he will be civil to Rafa Benitez and support him in making Newcastle United into a top club in Europe.
Ashley wants to have Newcastle as a Premier League club and spend as little money as possible doing that – in a nutshell, that’s the total ambition of the owner.
Rafa will know that now – if he hadn’t already worked it out.
It’s just not going to happen and Rafa will leave when his three years deal is up next June if nothing changes before that.
So we have to hope that Mike Ashley leaves before Rafa walks out next summer.
That’s our only hope.
If it’s the other way round we are definitely back in the dark ages.
