Sky Sports Pundit – A Joy For Every Geordie That Rafa Is (Still) At Newcastle

Former Liverpool center-back and now Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson thinks that Newcastle will do OK in the Premier League in the coming season – even though Rafa wanted to improve the squad a lot more than he’s been able to this summer.

Once again Mike Ashley has withheld the club’s money from Rafa and it looks like we will make another profit in this summer’s transfer window – so no net spend at all by the club.

Why is that?

Rafa doesn’t understand why there’s no money available since we finished 10th in the league last season, and got £123M for that.

Phil Thompson – thinks Newcastle will do OK under Rafa Benitez this season

And other clubs, even including recently promoted Fulham and Wolves are outspending Newcastle by large amounts.

We don’t understand it either, other than Mike Ashley doesn’t like spending money and would rather keep the club’s money in the bank than use it to build a good team that can start to win things – something the manager is used to.

And that’s where the owner is at odds with the world-class manager we have – maybe for the last season.

This is what Phil Thompson has said:

“Rafael Benitez has done incredible stuff at Newcastle. but it’s just deja vu.”

“He needs more backing and he’s not getting it. If he’s going to stay then he’s just got to get on with it, as it is a joy for every Geordie that he is there.”

“We hear about these standoffs but Rafa remains there – so it can’t all be bad.”

“The transfer business isn’t fulfilling any of the passions, but they know Benitez can get them on a few good runs to get them over the line.”

“Rafa has always been a great defensive organizer and signing the goalkeeper is key as he impressed me with the way he organized the back four.”

“Jamaal Lascelles has been a player who has attracted the interest of top clubs and he’ll be vital for Benitez in keeping the defensive unit solid.”

Thompson seems to think we’ll be reasonably safe next year because of Rafa and so do we.

And even after another poor summer transfer window, we’ll still have a better squad than we started with last season – a much better squad and a better starting line-up.

Dubravka and Kenedy made a huge difference when they joined us in January and  Ki Sung-yueng will be a big success – he is so skilled and experienced in the Premier League.

We are hoping that Rondon and Muto can help get some goals for us – which remains our big weakness – and we are disappointed that Dwight Gayle has gone for the season.

Florian Lejeune is going to be a big miss for us as he’s likely to miss most of the season through his serious ACL  injury.

We are hoping Newcastle will not be in a relegation fight again.

We are also hoping that somehow either Mike Ashley leaves the club or comes to some workable agreement with Rafa so Rafa stays on past next summer.

But that’s looking more doubtful all the time.

I know Thompson the pundit gets some stick
    but
he must have much more inside info and scuttlebutt
    than any of us .
If Rafa has another season of us punching well above
our weight he’ll have Ashley totally over a barrel by
    next Spring.

If Rafa has us punching above our weight nothing will happen, Ashley will say he’s been justified in his spending and it will continue

Just a silly thought, but Alisher Usmanov selling his shares in Arsenal would leave the Russian billionaire with the option to buy another club in the near future. He has been frustrated at Arsenal as he has wanted to spend more money on the team than Kroenke. Only problem, as I see it, is that Newcastle is outside of London.

Generally the pundits have a very limited appreciation of the situation at NUFC, making comments about the owner putting money into the club, fans being over demanding and not being a top six team.

    Bill,
Usmanov is not such a silly thought.
He has £550m from selling his Arsenal share and plenty more besides.
He wants to be involved in owning a football club.
    Only distraction might be Chelsea.

If the math works out right with all the signings and selling of players we have made a profit this transfer window? Guessing around 14 – 17 Million in profit, so we need a striker to replace Gayle but do we, I thought Muto replaced Gayle and Rondon replaced Mitro, Armstrong was never in the frame as one of our strikers for the first team, central defender and left/right back are more important at the moment. Two days and a bit left in the window and reports say we have left it to late, no shit Sherlock and for the love of god if we manage to get two or three players in within these next two or so days, wait for the report saying, is it a bird, is it a plane no its Super Ashley to the rescue stepping in due to the mistakes the club was making in not signing people when they should have storyline. The storyline, heading. Mike Ashley steps in to save Newcastle due to lack of business in the transfer window, he thought he had people in place to take care of this and shows the fans he truly cares. I do hope that Stephen King or M Night Shyamalan write the next storyline, as the owner is truly a Nightmare!!!!

Certainly not Jib. Simply the thought that a leopard would change their spots because their strategy (demonstrating traits akin to sociopathy) was successful, amuses me. Immensely!

Sergei the meerkat can buy us, he’d be a better owner than Ashley.

The past history of the owner shows us that he spends less on transfers the higher up the table the team finish. Rafa has not been able to secure investment in the Academy and training facilities, which he sees as an important next step.

Jib and his alter egos probably use the term ‘over a barrel’ more often than your average poster!

However often or in what context that term’s used’s got nowt to do with me or anyone else.

Bill/Lochinvar Usmanov’s money is already at Everton, has been for a few months before he got out of the long-standing Mexican stand-off at Arsenal. That bird has already flown.

Micky Gray on Talksport this morning totally missing the point about the players dispute with the club over bonuses and saying the fans won’t be happy with the players. He failed to highlight that Ashley had failed to pay up yet again in this joke of a club and most fans blame him!
