Santos Deal Off – Fernandez Flying In To Sign For Magpies – Permanent Deal

With reports that Rafa has now given up on signing a number 10 and a left-back today, and that he is “seething” with the hierarchy – there is some good news from Sky Sports that Frederico Fernandez is traveling to Newcastle to have a medical.

The deal for Marlon Santos is off after he failed to get a work permit today and thus the backup seems to be the 29-year-old Argentine International.

And it will be a permanent deal and it’s not for £10M but rather nearer £6M which would be a good deal for Newcastle.

Frederico Fernandez – on way to Newcastle for medical

Here’s the tweets from Keith Downie:

This seems like a very good deal for the club because he’s played three seasons in the Premier League for Swansea and will press immediately for a starting position in central defense.

The Swans’ assistant manager Billy Reid told a press conference today:

“Fede has been here throughout pre-season and was excellent on Saturday, but he’s a player who sees his future elsewhere.”

“It’s not settled yet, but it looks like he will go to Newcastle.”

So we will have four good center-backs at the club – Lascelles, Clark, Schar, and Fernandez.

And we also have Florian Lejeune, who may be out for the majority of the season, so maybe Rafa will sell one of them next summer?

That’s if Rafa cares – because he could leave Newcastle next summer at the end of his three-year contract – especially after he’s been badly let down by the owner for the fourth transfer window running.

Let’s hope we can get a left-back in, but the news is we will not be able to in the 3 hours left in this window.

More incompetence at Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

A couple things come to mind.

Clubs like Fulham, Wolves, even Hudders and Brighton, have been in the lower division for some time so they don’t have the contractual commitments to player wages like we did when we went down to immediately get back up. We had to carry that PL level wage bill for that season in the champo. So it is easier for these clubs to add players and wages. That said, it wasn’t the massive drag that Ashley has wanted to make it look and our huge loss from that season has been analyzed and debunked.

But, now that Fulham and Wolves are promoted people are asking “where are they getting the money?” Quite simple, by being in the prem they are guaranteed, at worst, 1 full season of sky money and 2 seasons of parachute payments. They can easily afford to get advances against this guaranteed revenue stream top try and consolidate a place in the PL. As can we, if Ashley wasn’t being a prick about it. Depending on how they fare this season will have the big say and if they can sustain it into a next season.

And someone said earlier that Ashley was holding out against incoming transfers because a new owner might not want like those players in the squad, well that new owner might have liked seeing a Mitro in the squad. So by the same reasoning Ashley shouldn’t have allowed high profile outgoings. Plain and simple Ashley wanted the cash and to hold it over Rafa by not letting him spend any of it.

BTW, the club is worth what it’s worth. If Ashley thinks it is worth 300M or 400M, he isn’t going to drop the price if he pockets 50M or more out of the club. The fact he can even do that would secure it as a good investment. The only way he’ll sell for less is if the club gets relegated and spends extended seasons in the lower divisions as that will cost him all the exposure he wants for SD.

The greater media and public need to turn against Ashley – and the involvement of public figures int he fight against him is helping. The matchday crowd can certainly help this as well. Things like the “we don’t demand a club that wins. we demand a club that tries” went over very well. I’m not good at thinking of ideas how to get the message across to Ashley but I’m sure there are some clever people out there in the 52,000 who can think of some way to get national attention without crossing the line and help add to the pressure on Cashley.

I’m a supporter of this club no matter what division we play in. Ashley makes it so hard to enjoy it though. He is a disgrace. Hopefully this is the last window with him as owner.

Don’t think Fernandez is a great addition, but happy to see a permanent deal just to put a check on welshies “I told you so” broken record.

Big question does Ash really want to sell NUFC? I’m not so sure, there’s more to be gained from keeping us. Faithful support, minimal outlay, profits to be made and free advertising for his tat.

I don’t understand Fernández at all.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have signed somebody but the one position we don’t need to strengthen is centre back. We’ve already got Schär, Lascelles, Clark, Lejeune (I know he’s injured but that’s why we’ve got the others – so they can cover his absence) as well as Yarney coming through – he’ll never get a chance at this rate.

If we somehow have 6 million to spend that wasn’t available earlier in the window (why???) then we should be spending it on Joe Bryan or a right back or a 10 or a striker – all of which are positions that we need to strengthen.

Maybe fernandez can play left or right back? Or maybe Rafa wants to use one of our current centre halves as a holding midfielder?

Rafa likes players he knows or has worked with before this boy was good at Napoli Swansea were a bit all over the place last few seasons with organisation etc

I can see us playing 3 at the back with Hernandez Lascalles and Dummett as the middle 3 and Kennedy and Yedlin as wing backs allowing for 2 up front Rondon and Muto

I suppose Clark could now fill in as left back cover if Dummett is injured

To get a near empty stadium on a match-day without people missing out why don’t they just set up a big screen like they did for the world cup? It would have to be a TV game so as not to flout the broadcasting rules but you’d still get the big match atmosphere & a nice (near) empty stadium for the TV cameras. It’s win win.

What bugs me is thet had Lejeune not had gotton that ACL injury we might have had a proper number 10 brought in. This window we have only bettered our defense. Apart from that we’re pretty much the same team.

    Never a truer word said.

Honestly thought he was gone this Summer. Apologies to anyone who I misled, I did always insist anything I wrote was sheer speculation on my part. I’ll probably do it all over again at some point – you have all been warned…

    Never mind.
    We could support Norwich City

A man has been charged with walking a pig along a busy city street in Norwich – without a lead.

Norfolk Police were called to Prince of Wales Road on Wednesday and found the untethered pig “running around” with a dog, which bit one of the officers.

How come Shirebrook is full of non UK citizens albeit most I guess from the EU and they have the necessary paperwork but NUFC can’t manage that for one Brazilian

Did Colo and Jonas not have the right work permit all those years ago – has Chumley learnt nuffink ?

It’s going to be interesting to hear Jib, Nicky and the other optimists’ assessments of the window.

It’d be particularly interesting to hear their views on the level of support given to Rafa and who or what has been key to the window’s success or otherwise.

Note – I referred to Jib and Nicky et al as optimists while some some would refer to them as Ashley cheerleaders or apologists which I didn’t!

Such a skinflint transfer window. As a silly fix I just started a FM game with the sugar daddy unlockable purely to be able to splash the cash in the transfer market, just to get a bit of how it feels. Draxler, Rashford, Verratti, Dybala, Fabinho and Richarlison all snapped up…….net spend of £288million…….and boy it felt good!

Jeez there are 1 or 2 thick divs on here who no matter how much you say something it just doesn’t compuute.

No one is saying that boycotting a match will hit Ashley financially, it’s the image of an empty stadium in front of sky cameras that says more and delivers a message far more than anything else ever could.

People could meet their mates and watch just one game in the pub surely. These are the people who moan about Ashley endlessly but slag off anyone like IRGWG who actually try and do something.

but it’s still a massive gamble with our premiership survival at stake, if/when Rafa walks fans will follow, and if we go down there will be no guarantees of a early return, which in turn will cost ashley millions in lost revenue even if he doesn’t want to sell

Fernandez is decent. It definitely gives us a better chance of a strong partner for Lacselles. A decent buy I reckon. We have some very good footballers in now. Strong in defence and solid in midfield. I would suggest mid table (10th) or above depending on the form of the new lads up front. Shame it could be Rafa’s last. But we’ll have to wait and see in the January window to be sure about that. In the mean time, really looking forward to us hopefully turning the Spuds over on Saturday. I can see Perez nippin in with 1 and Kennedy.

Fans are 12th man. And its not a wind up. Just a well known truth. So it’s a hard one for everyone really. Like a rock and a hard place. The support is worth 2 or 3 places in the league. So it’s a hard one. The players need the roar, it’s like a drug for them.

I must be going crackers? another CB who’s next another goalkeeper? maybe he can play CM when Shelvey gets injured or Rondon when he is out. Dummet is a very very poor LB not even a LB he is a CB told to play LB rarely gets over the half way line and cant cross the ball to save his life, often goes missing on corners or freekicks, Yedlin is even worse the amount of goals we conceded bcoz of him is not worth talking about. If Shelvey doesent play we cant string 2 passes together, Murphy doesn’t look PL standard, and Joselu should sent on his way.

Why wasn’t Joe Bryan or Kevin Mbabu followed up on? yet 6 million on Fernandez a 4th/5th choice CB come on whats going on here?

It’s a trap now isn’t it.. Fans can protest but then they have to get behind the team or we are knackered. The team we have will do well (not brilliant but okay) with the support. And so it will go until a new owner takes over. So we’ll all get behind the team again and hope someone buys him out and tries for bigger things. In the mean time though. Can’t wait for Saturday……Attack!!!!

    I concur, but
Could we see a back 3? Lot’s of wing back choices now and a great Defensive mid in Diame, 2 very good passers in Ki and Shelv. Could be a change up in formation coming. I Can’t remember one since Souness.
