Newcastle Get A B+ In This Summer’s Transfer Window

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is not usually a fan of Newcastle United but he has come out and given us a B+ for the summer transfer window that just ended last night.

Not many fans would give us that grade but Rafa has done wonders to bring the seven players in for a gross outlay of only £22.5M – he deserves an A+ for that but it could have been so much better.

It was nowhere near what Rafa wanted to do and he wanted a side now that could have a shot at challenging for a top-six position in the Premier League but didn’t get any support from Mike Ashley.

Sky Sports Pundit Paul Merson

Here’s the actual ins and outs at Newcastle this summer – Merson hasn’t got them exactly right in his article.

And here is what Paul has said about Newcastle’s transfer window:

“I like Kenedy, I thought he did really well last year. I don’t mind Salomon Rondon.”

“I know they let Dwight Gayle and Mitrovic go, but if they can get him going, he’s a handful.”

“I don’t know much about a couple of the other players, but keeping Kenedy on loan is a big deal for them.”

“He was one of their best players last season.”

“People are worried about Newcastle, but I’m not worried about them.”

“I think they’ll be alright.”

We think Newcastle have done OK in this window and maybe better than we think once the anger over Mike Ashley’s foolishness dies down a bit.

Here are the grades Paul has given each team:

A+ Liverpool

A Fulham, West Ham

B+ Newcastle United, Wolves, Southampton, Burnley, Chelsea, Everton, Huddersfield, Leicester, Brighton

B Arsenal, Crystal Palace

C Bournemouth, Cardiff, Man City, Man Utd, Watford

Expelled Tottenham

So tomorrow’s game is about a B+ team playing at home against a club that is expelled.

Shouldn’t we win that one?

Comment welcome.

    Repost.

Sorry, i really don’t see how it has been a good window. The players themselves are mostly ok, some I rate some not so much. Still gaping holes in the squad and whilst it’s been strengthened in parts, where it is lacking is quite poor. First 11 has been strengthened with rondon and muto as options upfront. That was our biggest weakness last season and it has been addressed but not with genuine goal scorers.

Players have been brought in late so have had no time to play with the squad, some haven’t even had one pre season game with us. In light of all this not sure how it can be a good window. Could argue it hasn’t been bad but in terms of Rafa, it seems to be a very bad window. Reportedly he’s not happy, he hasn’t been fully backed, hasn’t been supported with adequate funds, not all first choice, some transfers been rejected, no training facilities upgrades, no academy upgrades, no u23 additions other than toure. If that has even been confirmed. Plus, we’ve lost the momentum and positivity from the end of last season.

We have added experience to a young squad so hopefully that’ll be of benefit. One of the most frustrating things is that this window has had lots of bargains. So many players that could be gotten from frees up to £10m. We could have improved the squad greatly without actually spending much but we were not allowed to do so.

As this is the window that has guaranteed that Rafa is now off at the end of the season, how anyone could say that in the wide scheme of everything this was not a bad window, is beyond me.

It’s cost us the best manager we could ever get and one who sees a vision being obtainable here. Once that goes we are finished as a club with any potential whatsoever.

Also on Merson, how the above was allowed to go to print in any serious publication is outrageous. Hasn’t got a clue.

House of Fraser has been placed in admininistration.
Wonder how much money Ashley will splurge on picking up the remnants ?
Clearly very little as that’s his normal strategy isn’t it ?
Or will he rob Peter to pay Paul so to speak as he’s loosing a wad in his HofF investments so far.

@aarons, I am a fan who never dwells into backroom work with no facts I look at our club the way it. Rafa on the other hand is a good manager but too much of a politician and he also has attendance of wasting money. From the 12 players we signed from championship how man do we still have?? And for one Rafa shld know he is at a club with low commercial power not like the big six. So there is no room for error Wen it comes to spending money.

One of the ironies of this window
    Colback first caught NUFC’s eye
playing left back for the Mackems

With the shenanigans of a work permit for Jorge yesterday…
…does that mean when the UK pulls out of Europe next year that the likes of the TOON would not be able to bring Perez in for example as he has not played for Spain in any capacity?????

Given the tiny outlay I think Rafa has done a hell of job this summer. Sadly he has been publicly conned by Ashley and that relationship is now dead. Hopefully Fulham have bought badly but if Rafa had bought those players for us, fans wud be thrilled so we can’t have it every way. As I have said from the start, just like I said from the start with kenedy, rondon will be a good buy.

Were you ever worried about Newcastle Paul ?
And there we have our season in a nut shell.
Our elite manager will soon be challenging for major honours …just not with us.

Rafa is staying there is no club that will guarantee him 6m@ year with job security than one at NUFC. Once the team is flying and it’s all quite. Rafa will sign a new 5 year contract. And he will get wat he wants. Our team is going to fly

    Will die from last thread
Rafa wasted money? You tell me then, how much money has been wasted on players? I’ll then show you he’s recouped that back overall by selling having to wheel and deal during his time here. He has not wasted money, he’s made money and is in a negative spend during his time here.

My major concern is that we could do a Leeds or worse if Rafa goes and Ashley chooses a replacement badly and doesn’t fund him.

    Good or bad window?
You’re never gonna get the proper answer.

    An easier one is:
Is this yet another missed opportunity to put with the others from the last decade+ ?

No ambition from the owner. Quelle surprise. Nobody on the planet should actually be surprised by that now.

Will season ticket holders turn up to find a large phallus has been in installed in the centre of every seat in the ground to make it plainer to all what Ashley is doing to each and every one of you? Or a life size replica of Ashley’s middle finger perhaps?

Can they be signed up outside the transfer window ?
Might be a striker and left back out there you never know.

if we are to follow a business model. We have to first stabilze oursleves for two years after relegation to start spending big cash. NUFC made a 90m loss. And we over achieved last year and ambition raised Lets keep our feet grounded and first stabilze ourselves in the EPL

Will Die for the Toon Army I seriously think you need to think that one through again. He’s had 10 years to stabilise the club. His lack of investment and long history of bad decisions (by his own admission) Has left the club unstable 2 relegations? You can’t build a successful team with loan players. As far as Ashley spending ‘big cash?’ I think any fan that still thinks that’ must be an idiot.
