Joselu Starts Up Front – Ki, Schar, Muto, And Rondon On Bench

Newcastle will play Spurs this afternoon at St. James’ Park and Rafa Benitez has just announced the Newcastle starting line-up.

And of the seven new signings only loan players last season – Martin Dubravka and Kenedy – start this game with four on the bench – Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schar, Yoshinori Muto, Salomon Rondon and Federico Fernandez not in the squad.

Jacob Murphy is also not in the squad.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino

And Spurs have a stronger side than expected with Kane leading the line and former Newcastle player Sissoko starting this game.

Spurs: Lloris (C), Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Sissoko, Eriksen, Dele, Lucas, Kane.

About half of the Newcastle fans think we can win this game.

I understand that managers have to introduce players slowly but starting with Joselu is lunacy. Rafa has lost a lot of credit with me in this decision. Completely ridiculous in my opinion!

    Haha Joselu.

Rafa is definitely looking to keep it goalless in the first half then.

i know it’s a new season, but why start with Joselu.

I would rather start with an unknown quantity and have some home than start with someone who has zero to offer.

    my heart sank

It’s like Rafa wanted to start off with very very low optimism

Is Rafa making a point that you have to get players in early and not wait till the final days.

Hate to say to but a humping is on the cards.

Yeah I had a feeling he would start the muel upfront. He’s not the sort to make changes at half time either so might not be until the 60th minute until we see one of the new ones.
First sub will probably see manquillo come on for Dummett or something though! Haha.
    Come on boys! Big game

Ok that’s a terrible team. Horse poo upfront.

    I take my previous prediction.

Newcastle 0 Spurs 5. They will blow us away today.

Catchy – Zero to offer is a bit harsh, the lad runs all day and always puts a shift in. 3 of their back 5 only came back to training this week, maybe he’ll wear them down… :here’shoping:

Off to the pub to watch this with a mate (who is a Spurs fan).

Hmm. Joselu. ‘Feed the hoss and he will score’..? No..?

Moura worries me. Hopefully Kane will be true to past form and not start scoring this month.

Very excited. And worried. Same as ever really.

    Come on Newcastle!!!

Hopefully all hoser’s work pre season will pay off for him today. I feel if he gets a bit of confidence he could be good for us.

One of those weird days when the bench players are stronger than their equivalent starters. Aside from Manquillo and Darlow of course.

Said before, don’t think Joselu is that bad a footballer, he’s just not a striker. Plus, hope the ref keeps a close eye on Harry “Hitman” Kane.

Clark starting is the name on the team sheet that I really don’t understand. He was dreadful in his waning games before Lejuene’s return. Hope the man is ready for a bounce back. I hope to see Ki, Schar, and Rondon introduced in this one.

I think most of us are disappointed to see Joselu start but I’m not at all surprised, Rafa really rates him and wants to give him a chance to prove himself. Our squad will still lack goals this season but holding out for a goalless draw until half time looks like our game plan today.
Rondon hasn’t had much practice time so he’ll be to bed in.

I don’t think some of you will ever get Benitez. He only needs for us to keep it tight at the back and only one of Joselu, Perez, Ritchie, Kenedy, Diame, Shelvey Or Lascelles (up for a corner) to score a goal. Same manager, same tactics as last year. No new signing is going to change that. If we’d bought an absolute world class cf, by all means throw them straight in as they’d score in any team. Joselu / Rondon / Muto probably much of a muchness in the context of today’s game as the latter two are very late arrivals (blame Ashley for that). In future weeks, whoever shows up best in training should get the nod.

    Rafas logic is ok.
You can start with Joselu then pull him off for Rondon who’s fired up and gets the crowd going

Start with Rondon and pull him off for Joselu , ain’t the right way

If Rondon and Muto are much of a muchness with Joselu we may as well start planning for next seasons championship campaign now! Rondon won’t get bags of goals this season but he is a handful and will cause problems for any team.

There is a time and place to introduce new players slowly and plan for subs etc during the game. That time is not now when the player in question who will start is Joselu!

I think Rafa is sending another message to TFCB with this lineup. Rafa wanted his new recruits in early not last minute, he will say they are not integrated into the team ethos. This is all on TFCB no one else!

So here we are, start of a new season and tumult reigns.

I’m just glad it’s finally matchday.

Expected this side apart from Rondon for Joselu, who I will keep my counsel on and cheer, let’s hope he feels more at home now and can start the season with a confidently taken goal.

Hoping to see maximum commitment from the lads. Shelvey/Diame are pivotal.

I’ll go for an optimistic 2-1 victory – Perez and Kenedy.
