    Catchy,

Now now, no need to be narky!

Erm not sure how you could construe my post as a misquote of what you said – I literally copied & pasted your comment and responded to it!

Yeah, I did call them. But I can’t prove it, you don’t believe me and I shan’t lose any sleep over it. Hmm, not posting on the blog ’cause you’re watching a match and chatting to a mate isn’t exactly the same as knowing the lottery results and not playing though, is it..? Not a great analogy.

My point regarding their CBs is simply that Vertongen is a beast and played amazingly – as ever. It’s hard to ‘test’ them when they play a bullish 5-man midfield and you have the limitations we do. We hit the woodwork twice and were unlucky not to score a second.

Not a bad match shame Kennedy didn’t put away his chance for an equiliser.Kennedy and atsu seem to have some skill but are lacking an end product.Hope that may me coached into them but have my doubts. One other thing I wish we could learn what to do with a throw in.They are terrible at them.

    My mom was Shelvey,

Ritchie ran him close though, Dubraka looked injured kicking poor, which gave it away I think, did well but Atsu waste of sub, very pleased with teams effort .

For once some decent comments from other fans. A few good and realistic posts from Spurs fans on BBC hys review of game,

Just a pity that we really haven’t worked out how to defend deep back post crosses -.we got mugged like that last season, Liverpool ?

If 1-1at half time we were in the game as they were tiring and towards the end lost shape at the back but we still gave them time to clear and why give away fouls around their box it only restricts the time left we had to get an equaliser

Just watching Fulham Palace pretty entertaining game !

To be honest I think once Rondon and Muto get up to speed I think we can beat them no bother

Looks like Perez and Joselu will be the back ups once the other 2 get up and running

Some way OTT reactions on here lol. First half we struggled to get to grips with the Spurs midfield. Looked like they played a diamond and outnumbered us in the middle. Second half thought we were the better team after adjustments. Easy to criticise the subs but give credit too. Game was typical of first game of the season. The second half, in most of I think we looked like the team of last year February onwards. Very unlucky to lose. We lost both times v Spurs last year, and this result isn’t going to make or break our season. Cardiff will be really tough next week on their own ground. Hopefully yedlin isn’t too bad but it doesn’t look good. I reckon manquillo manquillo will get the nod.

Today was simply down to luck. Pochettino admitted it himself, say we played well created chances but didn’t have the luck. That’s it really.

I did say yesterday that we needed diame and shelvey to get up to speed quickly. Diame didn’t look great first half but was better second half. Unlucky not to score. Just a matter of time until we get to the levels required to start winning games and building momentum.

Cardiff, Huddersfield & Brighton all losing which is good as we don’t want the teams expected to struggle getring ahead of us when we have such a tough start to the season.

Next week it’ll be Joselu and Muto starting, if Muto is ready to start. Rondon will probably need another week as a sub. If Joselu scores again it might make things difficult re selection. Perez has probably lost his starting place. He ended last season in good form but had a bad day today by all accounts.

    Just got in from match
    my thoughts
Started off slowly as if a friendly gave the Spuds to much space and respect first twenty minutes and paid for it with some sloppy play.
Once we got up to speed much more even game and should of got a point with a bit of luck and better finishing.
Biggest miss today was LeJuene with his composure at the back and without him Dubravka’s distribution was hesitant to say the least
    Here goes my merit marks.
Dubravka 6 – Unlucky with first goal but not the keeper I remember first game against Man Utd – very unsure about coming for and commanding the six yard box. should NEVER, NEVER stand on the line and leave a floated cross come into the back of the six yard box. Should come and caught or punched the ball man and all. distribution was hesitant but kept us in the game second half with two reflex saves.
Yedlin 5 – All at sea today lost his marker time and time again – looked hesitant going forward unlike him
Clark 6 – Did Ok but poor on the ball – did not really want it and at times him and Lascalles were arguing over positioning
Lascalles 7 – pick of our defenders kept Kane in his pocket kept urging and organising a ‘rusty’ defence
Dummett 6 – Does what he does best defend but wanted to many touches on the ball
Ritchie 8 – My Man of the Match – involved in everything in attack and defence great ball for Joselu’s goal
Kenedy 7- Poor first twenty minutes but grew into the game seemed to be swapped to play a more central role, and was the main driving force in our midfield – would of been my MOM but for his slow start and missed a golden opportunity to equalise
Diame 6 – Looked way off the pace most of the game – got better as the game went on and tad unlucky when hitting the post
Shelvey 7 – Decent game but to many passes went astray and back to his niggly self giving away silly fouls and free kicks
Perez 3 – for putting the shirt on – sadly waste of space today – game passed him buy should of been subbed a lot earlier.
Joselu 7 – Best game in a Toon shirt scored a good goal – ploughed a loan furrow up front but stuck to his task and superb through ball (I think it was him) for Kenedy who should of done better

    Subs
Atsu 3 – poor looked out of his depth or did not know where he was meant to play
Rondon 5 – Did Ok – unlucky not to score – but looks a bit slow and ponderous at the minute – if we can get him fitter then he will be handful.
Muta 7 – I know he was not on long but his running the channels and across the oppositions back line was superb – years since we have had someone to run the channels – looks a great addition.

Rafa – 6 – Yes I would of started the same team – but I thought his substitutions were poor
    Maybe
Should of kept Ritchie on and taken off Diame for Ki
    subbed Perez for Muta earlier
    Joselu for Rondon fair enough

Ref 4 – let the spuds away with murder – two bookings niggled tripped all game

Crowd in full song early but as the game dragged on you could here a pin drop – behind the team and RAFA all game

All in we got beat but the last hour we looked a half decent team – be OK if we play like that
Play the way we did first twenty minutes – going to be a long hard slog

Agree with the rating for perez. Waste of space today. Was completely outnumbered in the no. 10 zone and he doesn’t have the intelligence to know to find pockets of space.

Thinking abut the utterly ridiculous sums of money being spunked in the EPL, I actually feel grateful our owner has his feet on the ground. £66m fora keeper; £71m for a keeper – just where does this money come from? How can it possibly not be money thrown away?

I totally understand posters on here are, like me NUFC football fans, so we enjoy football and want our team to do well (and so I know I’ll be crucified on here) but doesn’t it strike anybody else that these sums are insane. A small example: it was reported yesterday that that nice man Mr Mourinho was miffed that his bid of £100m for a centre half was unsuccessful. On the same day it was reported that our owner had bought the entire House of Fraser, lock, stock and barrel for £90m. Something, somewhere, doesn’t add up. OK, fire away.

It was great to be back at SJP as it always is after a long football-free summer (although there was that tournament early on in the summer…)

I agree with Charlie about Dubravka – he seemed hesitant about coming for crosses and his distribution was terrible – clearly he’s spent some time at the tim Krul school of kicking. Made some good saves but should have come and claimed the cross for the second goal.
Clark looked suspect all game – hopefully Fernandez will be ready for Cardiff.
Lascelles was fairly solid but his forward play and passing is awful – we really missed Lejeune’s ability to play it out from the back today. Hopefully he won’t be out for too long.
I thought Dummett was decent today – he didn’t offer anything going forward (naturally) but he was solid at the back. Yedlin on the other hand was absolutely abysmal – we were talking about needing a left back but I think right back is more of an issue. He simply cannot defend (both goals were at his back post) and was poor going forward as well. Hopefully Sterry can step up to the plate (please not Manquillo!)
Shelvey was non-existent first half – he came into the game second half and played a few good passes but didn’t look sharp. Diame wasnt his usual beasting and feasting self but played better than he did at the beginning of last season.
Kennedy did nothing for the first half hour but slowly grew into the game after that – by the second half he was epic. The spurs defenders looked terrified of him every time he got the ball. However his decision making in the final third was poor – he took a couple of wild long shots that were never on when he should have passed and kept the pressure on. And he should have scored the equaliser – why he took a touch I have no idea because it was a beautiful pass from Joselu. He should have just put his foot through it
Ritchie played fantastically – motm for me. Clearly his new hair has given him confidence – his runs, flicks, passes, interplay were all excellent and his ball for the goal was just sublime. He worked sooo hard – he looked absolutely shattered when he came off. Right decision to sub him from Rafa – he was a spent force by then.
Perez was woeful – where was the Perez from the end of last season? Muto should definitely start next game – he looked fantastic. Had he been brought on 20 minutes earlier I reckon the result could have been different.
Joselu – wow. He scored!!! His hold up play was good and he won everything in the air (although his headers didn’t find Perez very often). Hopefully that will have given him a massive confidence boost, although I would still rather Rondon started next game.
When he came on Rondon played well – he looked strong and fast, although he didn’t look 100% match sharp. His reactions were slow at times but he should be much better within a few games.
Atsu was dire. The less said the better.

Well I meant this to be a brief summary but it’s turned into a full team analysis – sorry about that!
For next game Sterry should start ahead of Yedlin regardless of injuries, Fernandez or Schär ahead of Clark, Muto ahead of Perez and, although he did so well today, I would pick Rondon over Joselu. Is it just me that feels a strange childlike affection for Joselu – although he’s not a very good footballer I feel like he’s a little baby that needs some love and care – “Leave him alone he’s trying his best!”

Anyway that’s my two hundred cents worth.

Think we played pretty well today, happy with that.

Dubs had not bad of a game, made one great save, but maybe should have intercepted the cross for the second goal, not sure.
Centrebacks looked good, Lascelles reliable as always. Dummet not great, but not awful. I actually like Yedlin generally, for his activity in attack, but I think he was poor today, partly responsible for the second goal. Despite that, hope he’s not seriously injured, because Manquillo…

Shelvey had a very good game, active in tacking and was running our midfield with his passing, voted for him as MOTM.
Kennedy was great. He has pace and skill. He will be very important for us this season, because he has HBA type flair the team really needs in attack. I have a feeling that he will be the most fouled player in our team during the season. Would have given him MOTM, if not the wasted one on one chance and couple of episodes where he had given the ball away unnecessarily, and also he needs to get rid of the ball just a tiny bit more often, rather than trying to take defenders one on one every time. Needs to improve, and probably will as the season goes.
Rithie was good, put in a shift as always and made a wonderful assist, didn’t really understand why he was substituted.
Diame – dissapointment of the match. Was poor in the first half and half-decent in the second, made some bad errors, gave away the ball too easily several times. Hope he picks up his form, on his day he can be even more influential than Shelvey in our midfield.

Perez was invisible, couple of games like this and Muto will probably take away the starting place from him. Muto looked sharp, may be a very good addition too the squad, but didn’t play long enough to tell.
Joselu – surprise of the match. Good goal, and was very useful, that pass to Kennedy was amazing, didn’t expect him to have a pass like that in him. But, obviously, Rondon is a better striker, in 15-20 minutes he created more chances the Joselu before he was substituted.

    just watched the game

With the few touches he had, Muto showed some real intelligence and composure on the ball. Perez will be looking over his shoulder …

joselu actually did fairly well…just lacks mobility playing isolated in the system. The lack of pace of Perez really makes it difficult playing any ‘target man’ up front.

Id like to see Muto playing # 10 …seems he could really stretch defenses and give perez & wingers more time on the ball.

I noticed Ritchie favouring his thigh
I suspect his frustration was because
it’s an old injury that’s reared its head.
    Two right siders out
Perez and Manquillo next game I suspect
Shelvey may be the long ball king but some
of his short lay offs were careless.
Ki for Diamé next game I suspect.
Joselu will be the starter until Rondon
    gets up to speed.
    Muto looks the biz
We always seem to lose a defender
    first game of the season.

Ritchie was class today. We’ll need him if we’re to maintain our EPL status. He stepped up last year to help save us and looks to have carried that form into this season.

Player for player spurs are better everywhere. Was a great performance from us to be unlucky not to have gotten at least a point. Every player done their bit today. Usual suspects on here vilifying Perez and Diame. Both players contributed to a good team performance.

People should lay off Atsu. His first 20 minutes after a lay off for surgery! What are you expecting?
Likewise Perez, Perez goals pushed us into 10th last season. A slow start doesn’t change that. If Muto pushes him that’s great! That’s what competition is all about.
As for our defence. They were playing against Erickson, Kane and Dele ffs. They’ll give much better teams than us a hard time!
We missed Lejeune and we’ll miss Yedlin for a while but Rafa knows how to organise a defence and will soon have it sorted.

    Jib,
Yes, Frank McCourt was owner a few years ago, prior to the team (Dodgers) being sold to Magic Johnson’s consortium. He always fielded a competitive team, but never could get Dodgers far into the playoffs or I should say we were always a player or two short. Not a bad owner. Certainly better than Ashley by miles (kilometers!).
