Potentially Good News From BBC Pundit

Newcastle beat Arsenal 2-1 in this same fixture at St. James’ Park last season – back in April.

And we are hoping we can get our first win in our 5th league game of the season having gained just one point from the previous four games.

Newcastle have played defensively against three top six sides in the league so far this season.

They are- Spurs, Chelsea, and Manchester City and lost each of the games by the same score, 2-1.

Former Newcastle coach Mark Lawrenson has predicted the same score for the game tomorrow, but this time that scoreline will be in Newcastle’s favor.

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson – predicts Newcastle win

Here’s what Mark Lawrenson has said on BBC Sport:

“Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has had some stick for the way he has been setting his teams up so defensively, although the Magpies fans are still very much on his side.”

“Saturday will be no different – you know his focus will be as much on stopping Arsenal as it is on how his own team get forward.”

“I just have a feeling it might work this time.”

“Arsenal’s players are not the only ones who have been away on international duty of course, but this might be a good time for Newcastle to play them.”

“Benitez’s side beat the Gunners at St James’ Park last season, to effectively ensure they stayed up, and I am going to go for the same result.”

“Prediction is Newcastle United 2 Arsenal 1.”

Arsenal don’t seem to have a solid defense this season, from what we have seen of them.

So if we can keep it tight at the back, Newcastle must have a decent chance of winning this game and raising the spirits of Newcastle fans everywhere.

That’s the hope in any case.

Has Lawro been paying attention for a change? Or has someone told him what’s going on?

Far more reasoned analysis than in previous seasons, though I’m aware he’s been ill and may have had other priorities.

I read an article about Lawros illness, it’s crazy how a viewer spotted a cancerous mark on his skin and called in to the BBC to recommend he get it checked and it seems it was caught on time… I’d say that’s one owed to the quality of HD TVs today!

This amused me, from @hanoitoon :-

    A story:

Early 2019, Ashley finally sells #NUFC. Rafa signs on for 20 years winning every single cup
He retires aged 80 with one last presser for what is now the biggest club in the world.
    He enters the room.
A Chronicle reporter raises a hand first:

    Lascelles, you’re not wrong.

I think I saw a follow-up article about Lawro meeting the fan who got back in touch after the BBC article was released, though I didn’t read it. One of those stories where everything you need to know is contained in the headline.

I do wonder what people talk about in these situations.

    “Thanks for saving my life”

    “You’re welcome”

“So, err, doing anything nice at the weekend?”

Go into your hub and at the bottom it gives you option of an avatar, it will redirect you to gravatar website and you upload your avatar.

That’s from memory, give it a little while before it starts to appear on posts though!

    Hope that helps

I did see an article where both lawro and the phone in viewer where on the couch together but like yourself I didn’t bother reading or viewing it as everything was in the title for what was needed to know!

geordietom, you have to set it up on gravatar https://en.gravatar.com/

Register using the same email address you’ve used to log in here, choose your image and upload it and then log out and back in on here and it should be done.

I hope that’s useful. Seeing as a few people have had others commenting using their nicknames recently, everyone should probably use an avatar though I guess if the phantom is really determined, they’ll find a way to copy that too.

Rob…The good thing about the Avatars is when you do change it, it changes it for all of your old posts too. So if anyone is playing silly buggers, it will highlight it very quickly.

I guess the poster name stays the same though and doesn’t update as you do your nickname?

Still, I would have thought it should be enough to make the work involved, not worth it, due to it being easily highlighted afterwards. Fingers crossed. The issue does make an often difficult blog unbearable.

Think I read someone suggest automatic profile links from everyone’s name too, which isn’t a bad idea at all. Takes you to source with one click.

As for Lawro’s prediction, usually a positive result from him makes me nervous, but bring it on. People can pick apart tactics etc all they like (pro or anti), we haven’t been far off results wise, so no reason to think we can’t get something out of the game.

Rob…There has for as long as I’ve posted on here, been what appears to be posters who try to make it difficult and disrupt however they can. It’s been made far too easy for them really. Small steps to make them try harder sounds good to me. At the very least it should make it easier for people to ascertain a genuine post or not and then be able to actually move on.

The debate over who did or didn’t actually write something continues for years on here. Given it’s written and a matter of record, it’s quite sad that it’s not conclusive, but it isn’t. Appreciate Ed has his hands full, but I’m sure he has the support to do something, if he can’t do it himself at present. Who wouldn’t take one day of no new articles to attempt and fix the problem?

    Hi Ibiza,

Btw, thanks for informing me it was internationals week so no game, a couple weeks back 🙂

On this, I don’t think he should be frequently publicly saying that of the squad, in order to explain the defensive tactics. He adds that on paper we don’t have a better squad than anyone, so only tactics (i.e. me?) can win games. I know he’s being honest but it may rub off the wrong way on the players themselves. I’ve read here and there that the players do know fans have been calling them championship players and that poor Rafa has been dealt a bad hand. Even if Rafa had nothing to do with hiring these players, it’s still bad form: look, I’s good, they, not so much.

Self-fulfilling prophecy. Tell them they’s sxxxe, presto, they are.

Slight change of subject for me, but if I recall aren’t we getting some sponsorship paid via “Bitcoins” or similar? Well as they’ve dropped over 80% in value since the start of the year, hopefully we’ve stuck in an option to be paid in cash too.

    Cyprus…No problem mate 🙂

I do understand your point, but what is he to say? Nothing? He’s probably repeating himself as the questions and criticisms are being repeated, however, that is part of his job, so he needs to find a way of dealing with it.

It’s hard to know, on the one hand, what you say is right, but the players themselves do appear to be on board with Rafa and his approach / viewpoint. They seem to at least respect him enough to trust him. I suppose where it may become an issue is if the results don’t start to match their effort, which they ultimately did last season, so it wasn’t an issue.

I find it hard to criticise Rafa on this point. How do you pressure the owner into spending needed funds and pretend that the current squad is in good shape?

I think what Rafa does do is offers players a clear incentive. He believes he can make them better players if they listen to him. A lot will depend on what is said behind the scenes.

Bitcoin should only be viewed as a long-term investment, being paid in that currency is risky but could pay big in the long term

That raises other questions regarding Ashley’s long-term plans for ownership, who will own the bitcoins should he leave (NUFC or MASH Holdings), when is the best time to cash them in, who makes that decision and what, ultimately, the proceeds will be used on.

It also makes it hard for a buyer to value a club if the club owns assets which have no stable value. One week the bitcoins could be worth £100k, for eg, the next £500k or £50k, depending on fluctuations

All legit points. And it IS a bit of a quandary. He does need to push MA or whomever to put in some serious cash or we’re in real danger. Again.

Despite our eventual tenth place, last year was really touch and go, as Rafa himself has said. It looks like it’s going to be more of the same. Still, as they say, wait till the first ten games before you seriously look at the table.

Anyways, as you may recall, I prefer that we give it a right go. Every time. This doesn’t mean play too foolishly… But: Believe. And, if we go down (in a game or even a division), let’s do it all guns blazing. And let’s be entertained along the way.

‘We’ve been educated’ way too much to expect so little, to quote an ex coach of ours.

Cyprus…I do sympathize, Rafa bought with him a philosophy that was never going to sit overly well with a section of the NUFC fanbase, who fell in love during the entertainers years. People can bitch and moan about that all they like, but it’s a valid reason to have become a fan imo and therefore, it’s very much so a valid opinion.

Not sure what to suggest really. I don’t see Rafa changing too much anytime soon. For me, he does offer so much more to our club at this moment in time I can forgive the lack of “going for it”. They, in the most part, give their all, and for me, that I can live with, after what has come before anyway.

Part of me wants to believe that Rafa believes some positive change could be around the corner. Hence the calls for patience and constant education, as you put it. I personally don’t see it him covering his own backside, as has been the case in the past, but I can see why someone might think he was. It’s perspective and opinions at the end of the day. Whose to say who is right? (I am and I am 🙂 ).

An interesting read. Basically a scheme to try and generate interest in cryptocurrencies throughout the football world.

It’d be interesting to know how much bitcoin the participating cubs were given to experiment with and as you say, who it’s actually registered to, NUFC or MASH?

cyprus, I can’t agree with you. If we take Ashley at face value, he wants to sell. We’re more attractive to buyers in the Prem than the Champo, therefore our best chance of getting rid of the chubby one is to stay in the Prem.

If Rafa has to do that by playing defensively, then so be it.

The fact that if we were relegated we’d take a huge financial hit and probably have to replace the likes of JonJo, Jamaal, Lejeune and others is another point

cyprus, sorry wasn’t clear enough – you suggested we should be attacking more “even if we go down, let’s do it all guns blazing”. I’m advocating the opposite, if we have any chance of staying up then we should take it. It seems to me the best way of avoiding relegation is to keep it tight at the back and pick up points by winning by the odd goal.

Not that I expect us to be in danger of relegation at any point of the season, but why make it more likely?

Wow, he’s feeling the pressure isn’t he – obviously wants to bring SD under his control – hounding the shareholders out perhaps?

Ashley does nothing without thinking (apart from puking in fireplaces), so this is an interesting one.

    Wonder whether he needs £300m…
