Achraf Lazaar was one player who couldn’t get a loan deal in this summer’s transfer window.
It looked like he would be moving to Genoa on loan but that deal fell through.
So he will be at Newcastle at least until January.
But Lazaar was still named in Newcastle’s 25-man Premier League squad.
He’s not training with the first team squad but with the U23s, and presumably, he will get some games for the U23 team through the end of this year.
Rafa signed him from Palermo for around £3M on a five-year contract back in the summer of 2016, and he has not been a good buy for us.
Achraf Lazaar – training with the U23 squad
He was brought in to give Paul Dummett some competition at left back, but it just hasn’t worked out that way.
Rafa has talked about Lazaar today in the Shields Gazette:
“He will stay with the U23s – we’ll see how he gets on.”
“We cannot say ‘no’ and we cannot say ‘yes’ – we have to see how he’s doing and then we decide.”
“The reason we put him in the squad is because we know it’s a weak position, and we have no back-up, so it’s just in case.”
Lazaar had a spell on loan to Italian club Benevento last season but last January he didn’t make the squad so didn’t play for them during the second half of the season.
His career seems to be going nowhere until he can get on loan – or sold permanently – so he can play regularly at some other club.
The 26-year-old Moroccan International has no future at Newcastle.
The Gazette is reporting that Rafa is not happy with Lazaar’s attitude and he is another player who seems to have been frozen out at Newcastle.
